Lesson/Activity: Journal Writing NOTE: Students may complete all journal writing tasks in their Choices Journal. The Journal may be accessed from either Choices Explorer or Choices Planner. After students have completed a journal activity, counselors and teachers may access the student journals via Professional Tools in either Choices Explorer or Choices Planner. >Professional Tools > Reviewer Tab >Browse by class lists >Appropriate Grad Year (Class of ) >Appropriate Student >Your Journal Grade 8, Guidance & Counseling Lesson Plan, September: Career Education Unit: Career Exploration Objective: Students will explore career clusters and make educational decisions using ediscover. NOTE: The SAISD curriculum refers to ediscover. Choices Explorer and Choices Planner will replace ediscover. All activities may remain the same only the online resource is different. Counselors should have all the information needed to access Choices Explorer, Choices Planner and SAISD professional and student portfolios.
7 I. Lesson/Activity: 1. Students will log in and complete an online inventory. NOTE: Use Choices Planner s Interest Profiler inventory. After logging in, it will take students 10 to 20 minutes to complete the inventory. After it is completed, scroll down to the bottom of the results clusters will be graphed according to student s selections. >Choices Planner >Work Tab >Interest Profiler (top of right column) I. Lesson/Activity: 2. Inventory results will be printed, discussed, and explored. NOTE: Inventory results will be immediately stored in student s Portfolio. They may be printed if needed, but they can always be accessed again later in the student s Portfolio. While analyzing their inventory results, students may investigate careers associated with those results. II. Evaluation: NOTE: Counselors may log into a student s portfolio to see results of the Interest Profiler. Additionally, counselors may create a report to show which students have taken the Interest Profiler inventory and how they scored. Counselors may also generate a list of student choices based on Interest Profiler selections. >Choices Planner >Professional Tools >Reporter Tab >Create Reports > Choices Planner - Interest Profiler Report >Create Report Grade 8, Guidance & Counseling Lesson Plan, September: Parent Night Unit: Parent Night Objective: Students and parents will become familiar with staff and faculty during an evening dedicated to families. Lesson/Activity: NOTE: When parents visit computer labs, all computers could be logged into Choices. Students could demo how they work in Choices, and teachers could hand out How to Create a Parent Portfolio (found in the online Training Binder on the SureScore landing page: ) explaining how parents may create their own Choices adult account.
8 Career Education Goals Grade 8 Middle School Objective: By the end of grade 8, students will have identified three jobs and career clusters that may be of interest to them in the future. Students will know what skills and education are needed to be successful in these jobs. Students will have identified their interests and how they match their job choice. Grade 8: By the end of grade 8, all students will complete an interest inventory and understand how interests influence career choice. Students should design an educational plan to the most desired career. NOTE: All components of this objective may be saved to the Grade 8 students Choices Portfolios. All portfolios may be accessed 24/7, and counselors/teachers may create comprehensive reports about students saved careers, career clusters, and interests. If they see anything in which they are no longer interested, they need to click >Delete (to the right of what they wish to delete).
