1 15800 Calvary Rd. Kansas City, MO Syllabus Course: PE 317 E Walking Credit: 1 Semester Hour Semester: External Studies Instructor: Jeanette Regier I. DESCRIPTION A. General competencies to be achieved. The student will: 1. Learn the importance of healthful living and its contributions to his/her physical, mental, social, and spiritual growth. 2. Learn an activity that can be used in leisure time. 3. Develop an interest in walking. 4. Develop an adequate skill in walking. 5. Broaden his/her general knowledge of walking. B. Specific competencies to be achieved. The student will: 1. Demonstrate an understanding of the benefits of starting a walking program. 2. Know how to find the right type of walking shoe. 3. Understand what types of clothes are best to walk in when each new season arrives. 4. Learn what type of walking accessories they should have. 5. Understand the basic elements of a balanced diet to combine with their walking program. 6. Learn basic warm up and cool down stretching techniques. 7. Learn correct walking form. 8. Develop and understanding of the ICER Technique for giving first aid for walking injuries. 9. Use ten motivational tips to help them stay on their program. 10. Understand how to use the RPE scale to help with program intensity. 11. Complete a Our Mission: To Live According to a Biblical Worldview and Serve
2 Page 2 II. REQUIREMENTS A. Week One 1. The student will read text. 2. The student will report that the entire text has been read in an to the NTS office. B. Week Two 1. The student will complete the Reading Review Questions. 2. Reading Review Questions are based totally on the text and are multiple choice. 3. The student will complete the three walking workouts listed for this week in 4. The student should execute a five minute warm-up before doing each of 5. Student will execute a five minute cool-down after each of their workouts. C. Week Three

The Student will finish the Academic Honesty Policy and the External Study Evaluation Form. III. METHODS A. Reading, writing, self-evaluation, and participation. B. Grading: 1. Walking Workouts (3 days/week, 10 pts/day) 210 pts. 2. Reading Review questions in weeks pts. 3. Final Exam (100 pts) 100 pts. 412 pts.

The Learning Center (learning@calvary.edu), located in the library building, is dedicated to providing free academic assistance for all CBC and CTS students. Student tutors aid with all facets of the writing process, tutor in various subject areas, prepare students for exams, and facilitate tests. Please take advantage of this service.

What are the goals you hope to accomplish as a result of this class? As you list your goals please make sure you are following the guidelines for developing SMART Goals! 5. How can a walker stay cool and safe in the summer time? 6. What things are important to keep in mind when shopping for shoes? 7. Name the different terrains/ situations each of the five different types of running shoes are good for? 8. What types of walking accessories are necessary? What type are luxury items? 9. How can a walker stay warm and safe in the winter time? 10. What hints can help a walker to stay hydrated throughout their workout? 11. What type of snacks should a walker choose? 12. What hints can help a walker to lose weight? 13. Name one function for each of the following nutrients: proteins, carbohydrates, and fat 14. Make a simple check-list that explains the correct walking form. This check-list should focus on the feet, back, torso, arms, and shoulders. 15. What is the ICER Treatment? 16. Name the motivational tips your book talks about that would work for you personally. 17. What is proprioception? 18. Explain the four golden nuggets listed on page 44.
