Ⅰ Information for the Academic Year Located in central Tokyo, the School of International Liberal Studies (SILS) is one of the Waseda University s undergraduate divisions, which was opened from April In this small and elite college of approximately 2,400 students, classes are largely conducted in English by an international faculty, and up to one-third of its multicultural student body comes from outside of Japan, largely from other Asian countries. During their second year, most SILS students will also participate in study abroad programs outside of Japan, adding a global perspective to their broad education in liberal arts and the modern world. In addition to this degree-seeking program, SILS offers a One-Year Study Abroad Program to international students. The participants in the One-Year Study Abroad Program can take courses with the SILS regular students. This unique setting makes it well-suited for a one-year study abroad program for students from around the world, who are seeking to gain a better understanding of Japan through a wide and varied perspective, such as politics, journalism, art, education, and industry. 1. Length of Study The SILS One-Year Study Abroad Program has been designed for a one-year period of study with an emphasis on Japanese language study. We adopt a semester system: Fall and Spring. Fall is the first semester of the academic year, and the Spring semester the second. All applicants are encouraged to apply for the full year academic program. Course registration is held in each semester, and all course work is graded at the end of the semester based on attendance, class participation, papers, examinations and so forth. However, to accommodate the needs of both international students and those of Waseda students, SILS offers two study options: Academic Year and Semester. (1) Academic Year Fall Semester & Spring Semester (September 21, 2015 to September 20, 2016) (2) Semester Fall Semester (September 21, 2015 to March 31, 2016) Spring Semester (April 1, 2016 to September 20, 2016) (3) Study Duration Fall Semester (September 21, 2015 to February 4, 2016*) Spring Semester (Early April, 2016 to Late July, 2016*) In all cases, the Study Duration chosen at the time of application cannot be changed subsequently, except in unavoidable circumstances. Course registration and student orientations are held before the beginning of classes, so students are expected to arrive at least ten days prior to the beginning of their period of study. *These schedules are tentative and subject to change without notice. 2. Japanese Language Courses Japanese learning experience is not an absolute requirement for admission, however, it is required to take Japanese Language courses while joining the SILS One-Year Program. Before the course registration, students who would like to take Japanese language courses at Level 2 or above are required to take the Waseda Japanese Placement Test (J-CAT) to place them in the appropriate class level, ranging from the beginning level to the advanced (Level 1 to 8). One-Year program students are required to take 6 credits of Japanese language courses in each semester. The maximum number of Japanese language course credits One-Year program students are allowed to take is 7. Formula to calculate the actual class time of Japanese Language courses: 1 credit = 90 minutes (1 class) 15 weeks (1 semester) = 1350 minutes (22.5 hours) 6

3. SILS Lecture Courses Since SILS is a liberal arts school, we offer various lecture courses categorized into the following seven clusters: (1) Life, Environment, Matter and Information (2) Philosophy, Religion and History (3) Economy and Business (4) Governance, Peace, Human Rights, and International Relations (5) Communication (6) Expression (7) Culture, Mind and Body, Community All the lecture courses are 2-credit or 4-credit classes. One-year program students are required to take at least 8 credits of lecture courses at Intermediate/Advanced level in each semester. For detailed information about the courses offered, please refer to page 9. The maximum number of SILS lecture course credits allowed to take is 14 per semester. One 2-credit course meets once a week. One 4-credit course meets twice a week. One lesson is ninety minutes. Formula to calculate the actual class time of SILS lecture courses: 2 credits = 90 minutes (1 class) 15 weeks (1 semester) = 1350 minutes (22.5 hours) 4. Optional courses a) Other Foreign Language Courses offered by SILS One-Year program students are allowed to take Other Foreign Language courses offered by SILS if seats are available. However, since SILS regular students have priority taking Other Foreign language courses in order to fulfill the requirement for graduation, please note that One-Year Program students will not be able to register if all seats are occupied by regular students. Please also note that many of the Other Foreign language courses are taught in Japanese; some are taught in English or with the direct method. Other foreign language credits are not included in the minimum required number of credits but they are included in the maximum registerable number of credits. b) University-Wide Open Courses University-wide Open Courses are offered by various schools and institutions at Waseda and are open to all Waseda students. There are two categories of University-wide Open courses: a) University-wide Open Courses offered by the Global Education Center and b) University-wide Open Courses offered by other faculties/schools. *Summer courses, courses conducted abroad, and courses offered by other universities cannot be taken by One-Year Study Abroad Program students. ⅰ)University-wide Open Courses offered by Global Education Center Almost all of these courses are conducted in Japanese. As these courses are designed for average Japanese college students, the same level of Japanese proficiency that they have is required to take these courses. Taking these classes is a good way for advanced students to develop their Japanese ability even further. ⅱ) University-wide Open Courses offered by other faculties/schools Most of the courses in this category are conducted in Japanese, however, there are some courses conducted in English as well. University-wide Open course credits are not included in the minimum required number of credits but they are included in the maximum registerable number of credits. 7

5. Syllabus Syllabus will be provided at the beginning of each semester to help students select courses. Information on the class schedule of the semester, textbooks, and other readings, examinations, papers, and grading systems is given in the syllabus. If you wish to read a description of the current courses or the past ones, please refer to Page 11. Please note that classes offered will be slightly different from year to year. SILS One Year Program students can take the below categories of courses: -SILS courses: Intermediate/Advanced lecture courses only -Japanese language courses: Courses offered by CJL (*10-credit course cannot be taken) Optional: -University-wide Open courses -Other Foreign Language (OFL) courses offered by SILS *Credits of the University-wide Open Courses and the OFL Courses are not included in the minimum required number of credits but they are included in the maximum registerable number of credits. 6. Assignments Students are usually given substantial reading assignments for each course to prepare for the class discussions based on those readings. Papers are assigned along with examinations usually at the end and/or in the middle of the semester. 7. Class Participation In the classroom, every student is expected to participate in the discussions led by the instructor and may be requested to give a presentation on a topic. Class participation is a large factor in evaluation. 8. Extra-Curricular Activities The One-Year Study Abroad Program at SILS and Waseda University provide ample opportunities for extra-curricular activities for International Students during the academic year. These activities will help students gain better understanding of Japan through wide and varied perspectives. Examples: Volunteer Activities (available through SILS and Waseda Volunteer Center (WAVOC)) <URL> University Athletic Festival All-Waseda Cultural Week Activities at the ICC (International Community Center) <URL> Student Clubs and Circles, including SILS Music Circle and Waseda International Festival 8

Important 12. Immigration Procedure Applicants of foreign nationality seeking to enter Japan and enroll in universities need to possess a valid passport and receive a valid visa. Upon visa application, an applicant is required to submit a Certificate of Eligibility together with his/her passport to a Japanese embassy or consulate in his/her own country. For foreign applicants, Waseda University acts as a proxy to obtain the Certificate of Eligibility from the Immigration Bureau of the Ministry of Justice. Please note that in some cases the Immigration Bureau may require additional materials. a. Certificate of Eligibility Japanese Immigration Control Law requires international students to obtain a proper student visa in order to study in Japan. The Certificate of Eligibility is the principal document needed for visa application. The Immigration Office will issue this certificate to the students through their admitted institution. SILS will apply for the certificate at the Tokyo Regional Immigration Bureau for all Academic Year Students and Semester Students. It usually takes one month for the Immigration Office to issue the certificate. Upon receipt from the Immigration Office, SILS will send the certificate to individual Independent Students by EMS. Please note that the immigration bureau of Japan may not issue the COE depending on the content of the documents prepared by an applicant. Waseda University is not responsible for the unissued COE in such case. b. College Student Visa The student should then submit the certificate, together with a completed application for a College Student Visa and his/her passport, to the nearest Japanese Consulate. This can be done in person and usually the visa is granted within a few days after the application is received. If the student enters Japan with a visa for purposes other than for study as a student (e.g., for business or sightseeing), he/she will be required to change the visa status to a college student visa. In most cases, a student visa will be issued at a Japanese Consulate located in a country other than Japan. However it is better and strongly recommended that you get the College Student Visa in your home country before coming to Japan. Admission to the One-Year Study Abroad Program at SILS ceases to be valid if, for any reason, a student does not arrive in Japan the day before classes begin. Upon arrival at the university, the students will be required to present to SILS their travel documents such as passport, visa, etc. [Sequence of Steps ( ) Involved in Obtaining a Student Visa] 2Application by proxy 1Mailing of 5Submission of application for Tokyo for COE Waseda COE application documents Student visa with COE Japanese Immigration University Student Embassy or Bureau 3Issuance of COE 4Mailing of COE 6Issuance of Student visa Consulate Completion of fee payment required 19

Ⅴ School life 1. Health Insurance (Updated: July 31, 2015) Since medical costs are high in Japan, international students on the One-Year Study Abroad Program at SILS are expected to have medical insurance to cover the entire period of their stay in Japan. Even if students have a medical insurance plan in their home country, they are strongly recommended to apply for National Health Insurance, a Japanese Government Plan (Kokumin Kenko Hoken), at the nearest district municipal office of their place of residence. The amount of insurance cost differs depending on the area where you live. Also, international students of temporary residence may declare they have no income from the previous year (earned in Japan) and apply for a 50~70% discount in health insurance payment (Kani Gengaku Shinsei, specific to the Tokyo Metropolitan Office). Please ask the national health insurance representative of the local public office if the discount is available in your area. By taking advantage of this discount application, students will have less financial burden. 2. Miscellaneous Expenses At least 30,000 yen per month will be needed for books, clothing, entertainment, and so forth, though the amount differs according to each individual s life style. 3. Housing (Updated: July 31, 2015) There are five types of housing: University Dormitories, Private Dormitories, Home stay, Shared houses, and apartments. For university dorms, successful applicants can apply through SILS. However, as a rule, Waseda University gives priority to the Bilateral Students in University dorm application due to the extremely limited availability of international student housing. For private dorms, home stay, shared houses (except DK House Tokyo Nerima, which SILS office can offer a help for application), and apartments, students need to make arrangements themselves. Upon acceptance into the One-Year Study Abroad Program, SILS will inform you of the housing options. The figures below are based on the average cost for each housing type. Living costs and rents will differ from individual to individual. All the successful applicants will be requested to fill in the housing questionnaire, and those who prefer living in university dorm or the shared house DK House Tokyo Nerima will receive the information about application procedure to the each accommodation. 4. Estimated Living Costs (per month) (Updated: July 31, 2015) University Dormitory (for International Students) There are three university dorms for the international students, all of which are located in walkable to Waseda campus. -Waseda University Students House North Wing / South Wing ( 早 稲 田 大 学 留 学 生 寮 南 棟 東 棟 ) -Waseda Hoshien (Bldg. #1, #3, #5) ( 早 稲 田 奉 仕 園 1 号 館 3 号 館 5 号 館 ) -Waseda University Nishiwaseda Students House ( 早 稲 田 大 学 西 早 稲 田 留 学 生 寮 ) Successful applicants who would like to apply for university dorm will receive online application form from the SILS office. On the online application form, you can specify your preference (for example, it s OK to pay up to xxx yen per month, you prefer single room, etc), but cannot specify which dorm to apply for. For the detailed information (including the amount of rent) about the 3 dorms, please refer to the web page below. 21

Waseda University International Dormitories (WID) *These are the private dorms run by one of the Waseda s associate companies named Kyoritsu Maintenance These dorms are located relatively in suburb areas in Tokyo and thus require minute train ride to campus (that is, commuting fee is needed). Each dorm has its own condition, so please refer to the website below for the detailed information. DK House Tokyo Nerima(shared house which SILS office can offer a help for application) Please refer to the webpage below. Homestay Fee (By Waseda University Academic Solutions Corporation) Please refer to the webpage below. Apartment (unfurnished) Rent 75,000 Utilities 10,000 Deposit 22,500 Food (boarding yourself) 50,000 Approximately 157,500 yen (per month) Depending on the location of the apartment, commuting fee will also be necessary. Other Expenses Lunch 18,600 National Health Insurance cost 2,000 *This amount differs depending on your residence area. Miscellaneous Expenses 30,000 Approximately 50,600 yen Ⅵ Information Requests For further information including the curriculum, please refer to the following website.
