Founded in 1989, SPIE Press currently publishes four types of books to serve engineers, scientists, and students in the diverse subject matter related to optics and photonics. SPIE Press Monographs are authoritative reference books, textbooks, and handbooks that cover theory, applications, and outlooks on topics of special interest to scientists and engineers. Tutorial Texts are stand-alone tutorials that cover fundamental and emerging topics in optical science and technology, at introductory and intermediate levels, making them valuable to students and researchers entering new fields of inquiry. Field Guides present definitions, equations, illustrations, examples, design considerations, methods, and tips that students and practicing engineers and scientists need in a concise format. SPIE Spotlights are digital books with concise, focused material (20 40 pages long). They get straight to the point or serve a specific need.

2. Which books are in the SPIE ebooks collection? SPIE ebooks on the SPIE Digital Library began 2014 with 195 titles 1 published from 1989 to SPIE Press will publish at least 25 new books annually as of (See the list of current books later in this section.) For the original SPIE ebooks program, only existing books with lasting technical value were chosen. For example, optical design as taught by Rudolf Kingslake is still relevant, as are SPIE books on radiometry, infrared system design, and thin films. Included in SPIE ebooks are titles from four series Press Monographs, Tutorial Texts, Field Guides, and Spotlights. Three tables about SPIE ebooks follow. In each table the number of chapters for each book includes any appendices. SPIE Field Guides have many entries of one to two pages grouped into sections; both the numbers of entries and sections are provided. The first tables list the titles published in 2014 and The third table lists all of the titles included in SPIE ebooks; details are available at spie.org. SPIE ebooks are a component of the SPIE Digital Library, which institutions may choose to acquire. SPIE ebooks have the same cross-searchability and depth of features as SPIE Proceedings and Journal content as well as book-specific features. SPIE ebooks are offered as a single growing collection of books (see Q. 2). As of 2015, at least 25 newly published books or editions (including SPIE Spotlights) will be added each year. Institutions have two options for acquiring the SPIE ebooks collection in any year: Subscribe to the comprehensive collection. A subscribing institution has access to all of the titles in SPIE ebooks in each year in which it subscribes and receives perpetual access to the titles published in each year of subscription. (See Q. 6 for details on perpetual access.) Purchase the comprehensive collection in a year and have perpetual access to all of the books included through the year before the purchase and the books published during that year. In a subsequent year the institution may purchase the collection published in that year as well as having access to all of the titles purchased earlier. 4. How are SPIE ebooks priced for 2015? The pricing for the SPIE ebooks collection for 2015 is detailed below (see Q. 3 for options for acquiring the collection). Most academic institutions are considered single sites in this pricing. 9 P a g e

Subscription to SPIE ebooks Collection: The 2015 price for an institutional subscription is $1,765 for a single site and a maximum of $5,295 for a multi-site institution of any type (three times the single-site price). For corporations and government agencies with multiple sites, divisions, and/or facilities, additional charges may apply. Purchase of SPIE ebooks Collection: Institutions may purchase the entire collection. (See Q. 6 for details on perpetual access.) Single-Site Institution A single-site institution that purchased the collection before 2015 will pay $1,765 for the books published in 2015 (at least 25 new titles or editions). This is the price a subscriber pays for 2015 access to the SPIE ebooks collection for a single site. An institution with a single site that is purchasing SPIE ebooks for the first time will pay $13,680 for the entire collection of books published from 1989 to Multi-Site Institution A multi-site institution of any type that purchased the collection before 2015 (books published from 1989 to 2014) will pay $3,530 for the books published in A multi-site institution of any type will pay $27,360 to purchase the entire collection of books published from 1989 to SPIE ebooks Access on the SPIE Digital Library for Lapsed Purchasers An institution that purchased SPIE ebooks and ceases acquiring annual collections pays an annual $300 platform fee (with a CPI inflation factor) for continuing SPIE Digital Library platform access to its SPIE ebooks unless it still subscribes to the SPIE Journals and Proceedings collection on the SPIE Digital Library. In any year that the institution purchases SPIE ebooks or subscribes to the SPIE Digital Library or SPIE ebooks, this platform fee is waived. 5. Does purchase of SPIE ebooks include perpetual access? SPIE ebooks have two forms of post-cancellation perpetual access for the books published in each year in which an institution subscribed or for all books purchased under the one-time purchase model: Institutions which purchased or subscribed to SPIE ebooks will receive digital files of the books published in the purchase and subscription years on a medium such as a DVD when the purchase or subscription lapses. These files may be loaded on a secure local server and used by the institution s Authorized Users in the same manner as they were used on the SPIE Digital Library. The SPIE Digital Library functionality will not accompany these files. Post-cancellation access is available on Portico to institutions that subscribe to Portico. This access will cover the books published in the years of subscription or the years covered by a purchase. 10 P a g e

In addition an institution that purchased the SPIE ebooks (rather than subscribing to them) may have perpetual access on the SPIE Digital Library platform for an annual fee of $300 (plus a CPI index). In any year in which the institution again purchases SPIE ebooks or subscribes to the SPIE Digital Library or SPIE ebooks, this fee will be waived. 6. How are SPIE ebooks archived? SPIE ebooks, like the Proceedings of SPIE and SPIE journals, are archived in Portico and included in the Portico program to make the publications available if SPIE should no longer provide access. SPIE ebooks are also in the Portico post-cancellation perpetual access program. SPIE ebooks is also in CLOCKSS. 7. How do institutions acquire SPIE ebooks? The SPIE Digital Library Sales team, including the agents who represent the SPIE Digital Library around the world, work with each institution to initiate subscriptions or one-time purchases of SPIE ebooks, in addition to or independent of the core SPIE Digital Library. 8. Who should an institution contact about acquiring SPIE ebooks? An institution may direct an inquiry about subscribing to or purchasing SPIE ebooks to their SPIE Digital Library account representative or to the following individuals: U.S./Canada William Goodman: [email protected] International Marybeth Manning: [email protected] General Inquiries [email protected] 9. How can an institution evaluate SPIE ebooks? An institution may evaluate SPIE ebooks for six weeks via institution-wide access or via a user name and password that librarians and researchers may use. Please request evaluation access from your SPIE Digital Library account representative or your subscription agent. SPIE ebooks, like the SPIE Digital Library overall, provides searching and browsing access for all researchers. Only the downloading of full-text chapters requires licensed access. In order to demonstrate the full functionality of SPIE ebooks, all chapters in Fundamentals of Physics (as well as the front matter and introductory material for each book) may be downloaded without a license. 10. What are the features of the SPIE ebooks platform? SPIE ebooks are published on the SPIE Digital Library platform and have its features and additional bookspecific features. Features that are significant to librarians involvement with SPIE ebooks include: 11 P a g e

IP-based access for authorized users at subscribing and purchasing institutions. Unlimited site-wide simultaneous use for subscribing and purchasing institutions. MARC records provided directly from SPIE ( at no charge and available through OCLC under terms OCLC sets (see Q. 12 for details). COUNTER-compliant usage records. Permanent URLs and DOIs for each chapter. Chapters may be linked to courseware systems, course packs, and e-reserves. Chapters may be used (on a limited basis) for interlibrary loan. Indexing service support through the OpenURL protocol. Services such as ExLibris SFX can use OpenURL to provide links from library OPACs to all SPIE Digital Library content. Watermark identification of library source and copyright on each page. Features of SPIE ebooks purchases or subscriptions by institutions that are significant to researchers involvement with SPIE ebooks include: User experience consistent with the rest of the SPIE Digital Library. Integrated searching with SPIE Proceedings and SPIE Journals. Browsing by book year, title, series, and author, as well as all books. Home page for each book with free access to table of contents, front matter, and index. Access to book content by chapter. Chapter-level downloading and printing with no set limits; however, the terms of use prohibit systematic downloading or sharing of chapters with anyone who does not have access. DRM-free: chapters can be easily transferred between computers and mobile devices. Citation downloading at the chapter level. Full text searchability. Access to full chapters in SPIE ebooks is not part of personal subscriptions to the SPIE Digital Library nor are they available on a pay per view basis. 11. What are SPIE policies for MARC records for SPIE ebooks? MARC records for SPIE ebooks are available directly from SPIE at no charge and also through OCLC (see below for details). If a library that subscribes to or purchases SPIE ebooks wants to receive MARC records from SPIE, it should request to be added to a mailing list ([email protected]). SPIE will send an alert and MARC record whenever a new book is issued. The SPIE MARC records and modified records 12 P a g e

are available at For technical or content problems with SPIE ebook MARC records, contact Libraries may send the MARC records for SPIE ebooks that they receive from SPIE to OCLC in order to share them with other libraries. OCLC makes available a collection of MARC records for SPIE ebooks which is called SPIE EBOOKS - (spie.ebooks). It is available via WorldShare Collection Manager, which is included in a library s OCLC Cataloging subscription. Each library must be setup with Collection Manager. If you do not know your OCLC status, contact [email protected] to determine it. 12. May a library that subscribes to or purchases SPIE ebooks share them via Interlibrary Loan? Regarding supply of copies of SPIE ebooks to other libraries, institutions may supply to an authorized user of an academic library within the same country, for the purposes of research or private study and not for commercial use, a single paper copy of the electronic original of an SPIE ebook chapter. The provision of SPIE ebook chapters to the authorized users of any single academic library is limited to six chapter transmissions within a twelve-month period. Further transmissions are subject to applicable Item Fees payable directly to SPIE or to the Copyright Clearance Center. 13. How may an institution acquire single SPIE Press titles as ebooks? The SPIE ebooks program on the SPIE Digital Library provides access to the whole collection of over 200 SPIE Press ebooks to institutions. Institutions must purchase or subscribe to the whole collection as detailed above; SPIE does not offer single titles to institutions. SPIE has established relationships with Ebrary, EBL, and EBSCO through which institutions may acquire single ebooks published by SPIE Press for use by their community members. Confer with your book vendors or directly with these ebook aggregators about how you may acquire individual SPIE Press books as ebooks. 14. How does SPIE offer SPIE Press books as ebooks to persons? All researchers have access to SPIE ebooks similar to that for SPIE Proceedings and Journals on the SPIE Digital Library. They may browse or search SPIE ebooks to their home pages, read the front matter, introduction, and index at no charge, and review chapter-level information pages. SPIE Press offers ebook versions of many of its books to persons (not to institutions) on the SPIE online bookstore. These books may be available in PDF, epub, and Kindle formats. SPIE also offers single ebooks to individuals via the Apple ibookstore, BN.com, and ebooks.com. 13 P a g e
