2 1 INTRODUCTION Industry Overview Groceries are the third largest consumer expense1, gobbling up much larger portions of monthly budgets than necessary In 2011, consumers spent $400 billion on groceries2 There s been a surge in supercenters and small form stores (such as Dollar Mart, Dollar General ) all offering their own weekly sales The competition for the dollar is a tough one for retailers, and many are offering personalized programs and branded apps All are helpful to consumers, but present only one point of view of what s on sale within a zip code When it comes to groceries, consumers want a choice on where to spend their money and will take extra steps to save Booz & Co recently reported that a majority (57%) of US shoppers say they are less loyal to any one retailer since they shop around more to find the best value This creates a challenge for retailers and an opportunity for consumers using technology The main problem for consumers, though, is knowing when what they want is on sale, and where; or knowing what s on sale for those unplanned stops Easy right? Not the way most people are doing it now For many shoppers this process requires reading about sales on blogs, checking newspaper inserts, making lists and cross-referencing across stores to find the best deal, then layering in manufacturer coupons Or, they don t look at all and find the prices of grocery and food items eating their lunch, so to speak The good news is that mobile technology can make shopping easier for every consumer They can save money on things they buy every day in grocery and drug stores Currently, 52 percent of US consumers already use technology in their grocery shopping experience3 But the piece that ties it all together has been missing One mobile place where a consumer can gain access to information across multiple stores within an area, easily identify sales on favorite items, get the best possible price through links to coupons, and get information about inserts and flyers A know-before-you-go resource 1 [Groceries are the] 3rd largest consumer expense: BLS 2011 Consumer Expenditures, Food At Home 2 In 2011, Consumers spent $400 Billion on groceries (appendix 1 - USDA Economic Research Service Food Expenditure Series) Description 3 52 percent of US consumers use technology in their grocery shopping experience (Booz & Co) 4 The majority (57%) of US shoppers say they are less loyal to any one retailer since they shop around more to find the best value, based on the FutureBuy 2013 study (GFK) 2

3 Background Story Savingscom was founded in 2007 and is a top destination for coupons and deals from merchant web sites and stores The site consists of an in-depth database of online coupons Shoppers can access thousands of exclusive offers from the biggest retailer names along with active deals from online and national retailers, daily deal sites and grocery brands More than 5 million shoppers turn to Savingscom each month as their trusted resource for deals and to interact with the site's popular community of online coupon experts, the DealPros The team at Savingscom noticed a trend three years ago grocery and coupons was the number one searched term on the site When investigating further there were two key observations: 1) Savingscom discovered a massive audience looking to save money in easy ways Sacrificing quality of life when cutting back was painful But saving in one place allowed consumers to spend somewhere else a new house, a child s education, that vacation they really need, or just to make ends meet Saving on groceries specifically was a way people adjusted to the recession, with some going to great lengths to save Content related to tips and access to grocery sales lists had an active and massive audience led by DealPros 2) No all-in-one-place app App offerings were varied, some great at one thing (such as list making) while others weak when trying to do everything (using standard data) Major retailers had their own apps and reward programs but relying on those alone meant shoppers missed out on items on sale right across the street The team set out to build an app that aggregates across stores, lets shoppers easily build, manage and share lists, and lets them discover additional savings on sale items for double the discount In early 2013, Savingscom released Grocery Nation, an alpha version of Favado, in the Ohio and Indiana markets with sale information across 10 stores, representing supermarkets and small-form stores Shoppers were able to make lists and compare prices by zipcode saving a great deal of time and money The feedback was overwhelmingly positive and showed strong and consistent adoption, indicating a greater need for a national solution Highlights and observations included: Users of Grocery Nation were using the app on average between 2-3 minutes per session In that time, they were browsing sales from an average of 6 local stores They added an average of 7 sale items to their shopping list per week And most importantly, they came back several times a week for new sales 3

5 2 GET STARTED How to download the app and set up an account Please following the steps outlined below to download latest version of the app on Android & ios smartphones If you have any questions, please 1 To start using the app yourself as a shopper simply download Favado from either the Apple AppStore, or from Google Play for Android 2 Once the app is installed on your phone, you ll be asked to set up an account and then log-in to the app 3 If you would like to become an affiliate for Favado, and promote it with your own unique URL to your readers, please favadopromoter@gmailcom for promoter information and contract Promoters add their own coupon printing site affiliate links within the app, so that consumers who download the app through the promoter s unique URL print coupons from their shopping lists Affiliates earn money from those prints for the next seven years! 5

8 4 SPECIFIC USES FOR THE FAVADO APP 1 Select stores Use the Near Me button in the store setup, and Favado will show the stores in the surrounding area that we currently cover Simply tap preferred stores to add them to the queue The more stores selected, the more choice there will be when comparing sales 2 Compare prices across stores After adding stores, tap ALL to pull up all products on sale in one list sorted by categories, which include frozen foods, personal care, pharmacy, meats, condiments, produce, deli and more Looking for organic? 9 SPECIFIC USES FOR THE FAVADO APP 3 Make a grocery list Tap Add to List on a few products from a few stores to build a shopping list Then tap on the list icon to view each shopping list for each store Next, go back to the sales lists and add a few products that have a red paperclip And then, the list to yourself to see format and links to any printable coupons 4 Find coupons that match with sale prices, then the list to print the coupons Pull up the grocery or Faves list and look for an item with a red paperclip Tap that item to be taken to an overview with the best possible price from combining sales with coupons or incentives 5 Build a personalized sales list Select at least 3 of the stores in the top nav bar Pull up the menu and tap Edit Favorites and select preferred product item and brands, such as Ziploc and Steak 6 Browse the Best Deals Click on the "Best" section and notice that the deals in this section are all noted with the red blink On other lists, the deals that have been marked as the top deals by our money saving experts will have the red blink notation 9
