2 1 2 3 Er Wc Cc EQUIPMENT WARRANTY CORROSION RELIABILITY COMPLIANCE CONTROL CLEAN AIR SOLUTIONS for DATA CENTER AND TELECOM APPLICATIONS PREVENTING CORROSION TO ENSURE EQUIPMENT RELIABILITY Environmental control programs for data centers and telecom facilities may be lacking a critical protective element; removal of corrosive gases which can harm sensitive electronics. Neglecting even extremely low levels of corrosive gases can have costly ramifications; downtime, non-compliance of electronic warranty specifications, ghost signals, circuit board failure and complete failure of electronic components including hard drives, DIMMs, capacitors, and other components. Environments that were once considered non-corrosive are now experiencing corrosion-related failures since the introduction of numerous lead-free legislations, such as the European Union (EU) directive on the Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances (RoHS). These legislations require electronic manufacturers to replace lead and other hazardous substances with materials that are proving to be more susceptible to corrosion. Due to the increasing number of failures using these lead-free materials, electronic manufactures have begun requiring an ISA Class G1 environment for warranty compliance as described by the International Society of Automation (ISA) Standard and as modified by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) Technical Committee TC white paper on gaseous and particulate contamination guidelines for data centers and the International Electronics Manufacturing Initiative (inemi) 2012 guidelines for limits of gaseous contamination in data centers and telecommunication rooms. How can Data Centers and Telecom Facilities Detect Corrosion? Corrosive gas concentrations are invisible to the human eye (10 times smaller than the smallest particle) and are commonly measured in parts per billion (ppb). While corrosion is primarily caused by a chemical reaction due to gaseous contamination, heat and moisture can accelerate this process. Although temperature and humidity can be controlled and monitored through the HVAC system, measuring the effects of corrosion requires reactivity monitoring, real-time or passive, as prescribed by ISA, ASHRAE, and inemi. Purafil s reactivity monitoring technologies have been trusted worldwide to help facilities proactively detect corrosion-related problems. Once a corrosion problem is determined, gas-phase filtration can be added to makeup air handlers, HVAC systems, and CRAC units. Over the past 40 years, Purafil has provided corrosion control filtration media, filters and filtration systems to help data center and telecom facilities maintain their electronic equipment warranty compliance, prevent corrosion damage and maintain equipment uptime and reduce MTBF (mean time between failures) due to corrosive contaminants. IMPROVING PROCESS RELIABILITY: Purafil has developed a comprehensive Assess and Protect program for data center and telecom facilities based on our 40 years of expertise in corrosion control and prevention. Benefits of this program include: Protect Valuable Data Minimize Costly Repairs Maintain Customer Loyalty Increase Equipment Reliability Potential Energy Savings ENGINEERED SOLUTIONS: Purafil believes in the value of air quality assessment and continuous real-time monitoring, so customers can verify the quality of the air in the data center. These tools enable customers to reduce or prevent corrosion damage and are key to a successful equipment reliability program. Purafil maintains nearly 30,000 installations worldwide in industrial, commercial and technology company facilities including: Data Centers Telecommunication Facilities IT, Server & Control Rooms Electronic Test Assembly & Packaging Facilities Semiconductor Fabs HDD Manufacturers LED/PV/LCD Fabs Pharmaceutical Cleanrooms

3 PURAFIL S ASSESS AND PROTECT PROGRAM is a comprehensive service that identifies and protects against contaminants that can cause failures in electronic components and servers. These failures have become more prevalent in circuit boards, surface mounted components and other electronics due to changes in electronic equipment manufacturing mandated by a number of lead-free regulations. Purafil s full service program helps facilities maintain their warranty compliance with manufacturers air quality requirements through environmental assessments and clean air product solutions. Let our technical expertise help your facility maintain equipment reliability, protect valuable data and minimize costly repairs. 4 AIR QUALITY ASSESSMENT: We assess your environment to determine the types and levels of corrosive gases in your data centers, server rooms, switches, I/O devices, power distribution and UPS rooms or other areas housing sensitive electronics. To the right is an example of corrosion that can form on sensitive electronics, which is typically only visible with the use of a microscope. Purafil uses reactivity monitoring (corrosion classification coupons) and real-time atmospheric monitoring (OnGuard 3000) to determine the types and levels of corrosion. These air quality assessment tools directly corresponds to ISA Standard Environmental Conditions for Process Measurement and Control Systems: Airborne Contaminants (ISA 1985). This standard is currently being revised with updates made necessary by the numerous RoHS (lead-free) regulations that have been put into law and by changes recommended by ASHRAE Technical Committee 9.9 on Mission Critical Facilities, Technology Spaces and Electronic Equipment for application into non-industrial environments. Revisions have been approved by the ISA S71 Committee and final approval and publication is pending the results of public review. REAL-TIME CORROSION MONITORING: Purafil s OnGuard 3000 real-time reactivity monitor provides a continuous measure of atmospheric corrosion levels which can identify trends, enabling preventative action before severe damage occurs. OnGuard readings have been demonstrated to accurately correlate to ISA s air quality classification scheme. Place an OnGuard monitor at the outlet of your data center or telecom facility s HVAC system or in the room of concern to establish air quality baselines and identify specific corrosion related events. 5 PROTECTION SERVICES: Assuming the HVAC system is already equipped with adequate particulate filtration; gaseous air cleaning can be used in conjunction with the existing air handling systems. Purafil gas-phase air filters or filtration systems employing one or more of our adsorbent and/or chemisorbent media can effectively reduce gaseous contaminants to well below specified guidelines. Properly applied, gaseous air cleaning also has the potential for energy savings. The type of protection service will depend upon if the air handling system uses outdoor air to provide ventilation, pressurization, free-colling, or whether Computer Room Air Conditioning (CRAC) units are used for 100% recirculation. To guide you through some of these applications, below is an outline of various types of air handlers and applicable protection services. Computer Room Air Conditioning (CRAC) Units - Almost all CRAC units already have particulate filtration built in that can be retrofitted to use Purafilter combination particulate and chemical filters. With this type of filter one can maintain the same level of particulate filtration while adding the chemical filtration required for the control of low levels of gaseous contamination. PuraGRID filters are also being used in CRAC units to provide control of low-to-moderate levels of gaseous contamination but do not provide particulate filtration. If this is required, a particulate filter can be supplied in front of the PuraGRID filter. Makeup (Outdoor, Fresh) Air Handlers - If ventilation and/or pressurization air is being supplied by an existing makeup air handler, chemical filtration may be added as a retrofit using PuraGRIDs or Purafilters, depending on the capabilities of the air handler and the requirements for air cleaning. If this is not a practical solution, then one should consider integrating a separate air cleaning section onto the existing makeup air handler(s) incorporating PuraGRIDs, Purafilters, or MediaPAK modules. If additional air is required for pressurization, a standalone air cleaning system may be required incorporating PuraGRID filters, MediaPAK modules, or bulk-fill media in deep bed systems. Airside Economizers - The primary concern in this approach to data center cooling is that outside air contaminants both particulate and gas-phase will have a negative impact on electronics. Data centers located in regions with poor ambient air quality will struggle to maintain an environment conducive for the protection of sensitive electronic equipment. PuraGRID filters and/or Purafilters can be easily applied in these systems to address this serious contamination issue. PURAFILTER A combination chemical and particulate filter designed to replace existing particulate filters in retrofit or rework applications. 16X MAGNIFIED PuraGRID FILTER WITH THE GridBLOK TECHNOLOGY This revolutionary filter is designed to supply a large amount of chemical filtration media with minimal amount of pressure drop. The media delivery system within the PuraGRID filter, the GridBLOK, offers increased operational performance and energy savings. 32X MAGNIFIED THE GridBLOK MEDIA TECHNOLOGY INSIDE THE PuraGRID FILTER MAGNIFIED VIEW OF THE GridBLOK CELLULAR STRUCTURE MEDIAPAK MODULES Purafil s dry-scrubbing media is either bulk-filled within our engineered equipment or inside our MediaPAK modules or PuraGRID filters which are then inserted into the equipment. MediaPAK modules are filled with your choice of Purafil dry-chemical media, which is non-toxic and non-hazardous as supplied.

6 PROTECTION EQUIPMENT: Purafil is an ISO 9001 quality management system certified manufacturer. Since we engineer and construct our equipment, media and corrosion monitoring instrumentation we can customize each component to create a builtto-order package to meet your clean air challenges. Below are some examples and applications for some of our most popular equipment used in data center and telecom applications. Purafil Side Access System (PSA) is designed to remove both particulate and gaseous pollutants from outdoor (makeup) air for corrosion control. When outdoor air is being delivered either directly to the data center or indirectly through a mechanical room, the PSA system can be used as powered or non-powered units designed to control low-to-moderate levels of gaseous contaminants. Purafil Positive Pressurization Unit (PPU) is designed to filter low-to-moderate concentrations of outside air contaminants and supplies cleaned pressurization air to the critical space(s). This unit contains a particulate pre-filter, two stages of PuraGRID filters or MediaPAK modules, a 90% particulate final filter, a blower section, and an adjustable damper for control of pressurized air into the air handling system or directly into the data center. Purafil Corrosive Air Recirculating Air Handler (CA) is an in-room, self-contained unit used to provide increased amounts of clean recirculated air to areas with low-to-moderate gaseous contaminant levels. Purafil Deep Bed Scrubber (DBS) is designed for areas where higher levels of contaminant gases are present and other systems cannot economically provide the filtration required to meet air quality standards. The DBS provides protection against environmentally induced corrosion and is designed to provide clean pressurized air to the data center environment. Under-Floor Air Filtration is the latest innovation for the application of Purafil filters under the perforated panels on the cold aisles in raised floor systems. The filters can be placed in a customized tray under the perforated panel and fits the dimensions of the existing access floor grid. This type of application can be considered for installations using 100% recirculation systems.

7 CONTAMINATION CONTROL PROCESS FLOW Purafil developed the below flow chart to show the process of monitoring and controlling corrosive contaminants in a data center. Although each data center will be different in terms of construction, layout, size, HVAC system components, etc., the fundamental steps one takes to establish the risk potential of the data center environment towards the datacom equipment in use are relatively straightforward.
