1 Workshop I Introduction to the Distance Learning and Tools By: Mohammad Bashir Dawar Afghan Resource Person Distance Learning: A new method of learning No need for a centralized location or class room Courses target students who are separated by time and space from the instructor and even each other. Fellows interact with the instructors and/or other fellows by phone, , instant messaging etc. Depends entirely on technology; computer, internet, radio, television, phone etc. 1

2 Methods of delivery: One way delivery: TV, Radio, Video / Audio pre recorded tapes Tele-courses, online courses Two way (live/interactive) Delivery: Audio conferences (over phone, over internet) Video conferences Text correspondence , instant messaging, Regular mail, handouts and books The DL method has benefits: Flexibility for learners (time and space) Experience using different communication channels and technology Access to National and International resources Low cost Learning while working full time in your organization Learning options are not limited to geographic locations (no visa and travel costs are required) Easy access to wide range of academic material and human resources Connect with a network all over the world 2

3 DL has disadvantages: Technology doesn t always work prefectly Lack of human interaction as in a traditional classroom DL method is not ideal for all candidates DL requires adaptability with new technology You have to meet the deadlines anyway: UNITAR DL method: Blended-Learning methodology: In class room through Video Conference In class room face to face Audio/Web conference + instant messaging correspondence One to one direct coaching 3

11 Points to remember Free download Skype from Create your Skype ID and share it Accept the invitation of people who you know only While conference call, accept calls from the moderator only During conference call Keep your microphone on mute if you are not talking. Press this icon to mute or un-mute your microphone during the call Points to remember Prior to AWC check your system, connection and Audio (headphone in and out) Some organizations do not permit Skype or Elluminate in their networks Be on time (10 minutes earlier) for AWC s Stay till end of the session, else you may miss a lot. Keep your turns, talk short and clear Prior to the session make notes of your questions and talking points. Try to get maximum benefit from each session. 11

12 Risks and Mitigation The most important: Technology may not work perfectly all the time.
