Search Builder - Search Tips Below are a few useful notes about free text searching when using the anywhere selection: NewsEdge.com search supports stemming of terms. If you type in the word pharmacy, the search engine will also find pharmacies. If you type in the word develop, it would also find develops, developed and developing. NewsEdge.com uses both the asterisk (*) and question mark (?) as wildcard characters. But it is important to note that wildcard characters can only be used after a minimum of two characters. It is not a valid search to use a wildcard in either the first or second position of a word. The? wildcard takes the place of a character and will look for exactly 1 character. For example, if you type in pe?r, this will find the word pear or peer. If you use the * wildcard, the search will look for 1 or more characters. For example, an * at the end of the word pharma* will find pharmacy, pharmaceutical, pharmacist, pharmacology, etc. Advanced Search NewsEdge.com offers users the ability to access an Advanced Search window to type in more complex search expressions which can include grouped expressions, incorporating keywords, phrases, facet codes, multiple Boolean operators or even proximity operators

50 You will notice a large search box at the top and your Settings section on the bottom. You may need to click on the expand button ( ) to see your settings. You can begin to type your Boolean search query directly into the search text box. Use the Search/Browse Taxonomy option below the search box to help you identify company, industry, place, source, subject, and people codes to use within your search string. Add the term to the Search/Browse Taxonomy text box and click the lookup icon ( ). When you find the term(s) you want, click to have them added directly to your search string. By default, NewsEdge.com will add the term using the AND qualifier but you can change this by replacing it directly in the search query string. You can toggle between Advanced Search and the other search interfaces by selecting these from the navigation bar. If you are building complex queries in the Advanced Search screen, they may not appear in the Guided or Boolean Search interfaces. However, NewsEdge.com will keep you search query intact. Just as before, use the Search button to get search results. If you are satisfied with the results, then you can type a name into the Save current search box and save your search. Advanced Search - Search Tips Use quotation marks to enclose phrases and perform an exact search. For example, "joint venture"

The proximity operator, WITHIN,#, where # represents the number of words between the first term and the second term can be used for advanced queries. WITHIN is a bidirectional search which means it will search x number of words forward and search x-1 number of words back. For example, to find stories where the word unemployment is within 4 words of the word government, you would type in unemployment WITHIN,4 government. This will find government aid for unemployment or unemployment figures boosted by government but will not find government sought aid for unemployment. The proximity operator, FOLLOWEDBY,#, where # represent the number of words after your first term the second term will appear can be used in advanced search queries. 68 You will also need to choose the number of results you want to receive. NewsEdge.com has divided this into three manageable components. First, you can set the number of results you wish to receive from each saved search in your alert. The maximum number is 50 results per saved search. If you set your maximum to 50 results and for any given saved search included in your alert that produced a number greater than 50 results, you would receive the top 50 new results since the last time your alert ran. If you do not have 50 results since your last alert, only those results that are new to the saved search will be sent. You may also set the number of stories to be sent in each ed alert. The maximum number of stories for each is 100 stories in total. If your alert contains more than 100 relevant stories, you will receive multiple s. And finally, you can set the maximum number of s you wish to receive on any alert. The maximum number is 20 s per alert. The NewsEdge.com Alerts are purposefully set up to keep your alerts manageable and actionable. If you find your alerts are producing too many results, consider changing the number of saved searches included in any given alert and/or producing alerts on a more frequent basis to ensure you are able to stay informed. You will also have the option to choose a headline only or headline and summary display for your ed stories as well as a layout template. Current layouts include a simple listing and a listing with your introduction placed on top. Other layouts will be added here as they are available. The final step is to save and run your alert. By clicking you will be asked to name your alert. Simply put your alert name into the text box and click. You will notice a second smaller window will appear acknowledging that you have successfully created an alert. By clicking, you will send a request to have your alert run according to your designated schedule. Once you receive your alert(s), you can read the full text story of any headline sent by clicking on the headline. You will be directed back to NewsEdge.com to read the full text story except in the case of stories with symbol indicator. Stories with symbol indicator next to the headline indicate the story is from a third party web site and you will be redirected to that web site to read the full text story

69 To make any changes to an existing alert, you must be in the Alerts section of the Manage Page. Click on the name of your saved alert and your alert details will appear in the middle column.
