2 Fort Hays State Notes Last Time Against Southwest Baptist: Fort Hays State defeated Southwest Baptist in their second and fi nal meeting of the season on February 16, 2011 in Hays. The Tigers survived a scare from the Bearcats, as FHSU was up just one when SBU's Tomas Brock missed a jumper with fi ve seconds remaining and Dijon Smith secured the rebound. Smith went to the free-throw line and hit both shots to make it a 3-point game, and then SBU turned the ball over on the inbounds pass. Karron McKenzie put the game away for good with two more free-throws. SBU held a one-point lead at halftime, but Fort Hays State went on a 10-1 run in the middle of the second half to take an 8-point advantage. SBU steadily chipped away at the lead and got within one with 33 seconds remaining in the game. Dijon Smith led FHSU with 19 points, while Ken Bowman, Corbin Kuntzsch, and Karron McKenzie all had 14. Tomas Brock and Kurt Koenig led SBU with 20 points each. Tigers Set Several Lows in Loss at Central Missouri: Fort Hays State turned in its worst offensive performance of the season in the loss at Central Missouri on Wednesday. The Tigers shot just 25.5% from the fi eld (13-of-51), a new season low. They also tied the season low for 3-point fi eld goals made (4). However, the Tigers set a new season high in free-throw percentage (.909, 10-of-11) and tied the season high in fouls (23), which they set in both games over their road trip against Truman and Central Missouri. The 10th-ranked Tigers never found a rhythm offensively thanks to a well executed defensive plan by the Ichabods, shooting just 31.1 percent from the field for the game. It was the first loss of the season for FHSU. Both teams struggled offensively in the first half, which allowed the Tigers to trail by just five at the break, But things would not get any better for FHSU in the second half, while Washburn shot 54.2 percent from the field in the second stanza to pull away for the 16-point win. Truman (Mo.)-None. Attendance: 301 Recap: FHSU escaped Kirksville, Mo., with a win over Truman on January 2. Up by one with just under four minutes remaining, Moses Dayee and Kendrick Morse dialed up a pair 3-point field goals that gave the Tigers enough separation to eventually pull out the road victory. FHSU executed its defensive game plan well, but offensive struggles are what allowed Truman to stay in the game. FHSU held Truman to just 20 percent shooting in the first half (5-of-25), but unfortunately were unable to muster much offense as well, shooting just 31 percent (9-of-29). As a result, the Tigers led by just four at halftime, FHSU hit just 2-of-12 shots (16.7 percent) beyond the 3-point line in the first half. FHSU did better in the second half offensively, shooting 48.1 percent from the field, while keeping Truman under 40 percent once again. FHSU finished the game at 39.3 percent overall, its secondlowest percentage of the season, but held Truman to 31.1 percent overall. In a game where every possession was valuable, the Tigers looked to seize control of the offensive struggle with a 7-0 run to take an 11-point lead at the 11:15 mark of the second half, but Truman followed that with a 12-2 run to pull back within one point at the 7:19 mark. After trading a pair of baskets, both teams went scoreless from the 6:48 mark to the 3:58 mark until Moses Dayee snapped that drought with a 3-point field goal to put FHSU up four. Kendrick Morse followed on the next possession with another triple to push the FHSU lead back to seven. That would be enough to lift the Tigers to victory, who did not allow the Bulldogs any closer than four points the rest of the way. The Tigers held the Griffons to just 1-of-17 shooting (5.8 percent) to start the game and eventually shot just 16.1 percent in the first half. Fort Hays State held a lead at halftime. The Griffons could not get any closer than 17 points until the 2:50 mark of the second half. The score would indicate a bit closer game, but FHSU did not score over the final 4:33 of the game after holding a 20-point lead at that point. The Tigers' largest lead of the game was 29 points, which they reached twice in the first half. Fort Hays State shot the ball well from the free-throw line, a season-high 85 percent (17-of- 20). The Tigers were 16-of-18 at the free-throw line in the first half. Markus Yarbrough led FHSU in scoring with 11 points off the bench. Karron McKenzie also reached double figures with 10 points. Central Missouri-None. Attendance: 1500 Recap: Fort Hays State suffered its first road loss of the season on Jan. 4 at Central Missouri. Red-hot shooting by the Mules, coupled with Fort Hays State's poorest offensive performance of the season, resulted in a loss for the Tigers. Fort Hays State is now 10-2 overall and 4-2 in the MIAA. Central Missouri, now 8-4 overall and 4-3 in the MIAA, never trailed in the game and built a lead of 18 points at halftime by a score of Fort Hays State shot just 25.9 percent in the first half (7-of-27), compared to 61.9 percent for the Mules (13-of-21). The second half was nearly identical by the percentages, as Fort Hays State finished the game at an abysmal 25.5 percent from the field (13-of-51). The Tigers were 22.2 percent beyond the 3-point line (4-of-18), but did have one bright spot, the free-throw line where they went 10-of-11 on the night (90.9 percent). Central Missouri shot even better in the second half and finished the game at 62.8 percent from the field (27-of- 43). Karron McKenzie was the only FHSU player in double figures with 12 points. He has scored in double figures in all but one game this year. All other Tigers scored five points or less. The 40 points by FHSU tied the lowest total scored in the Mark Johnson coaching era. The 38-point margin was also the largest loss ever for FHSU in MIAA play.
