3 The Main Line: A Mecca for Seniors Aging happens to the best of us. All those exercise and diet routines can certainly keep us looking and feeling young, but the fact is, certain needs become more pressing as we age. Pennsylvania especially the Philadelphia suburbs remains wildly popular with the G.I. Generation. Based on research from the Pennsylvania Health Care Association, the numbers here illustrate the ongoing need for independent living, assisted living and nursing facilities throughout our state. Pennsylvania s 65-and-older population ranks third in the United States, behind Florida and West Virginia. One in five is 60 or older. Its over-85 population ranks fourth in the country. By 2020, Pennsylvania s 60-and-older segment is expected to make up 25 percent of the total population that s more than 3 million people. By 2020, the number of people 85 or older is expected to increase 10 percent, to more than 360,000 residents. Pennsylvania has about 725 nursing homes, with more than 89,000 beds. Live well. Live Long. Live at Beaumont. One, only one, retirement community in the Philadelphia area, offers you these 6 keys to many happy years: 1 Own your home: a spacious apartment or villa 2 First-class food, your choice of seven unique dining rooms 3 A true community of warm, welcoming people 4 A wide range of activities twenty-nine, actually- both physical and mental 5 Health care right here with doctors and nurses and care facilities available every single day 6 Because Beaumont is a co-op, you become an owner with tax advantages and assurance of continuity and quality. 4 Fortunately for local seniors, the Main Line is home to a high concentration of facilities that offer the full spectrum of services. Martins Run Senior Living Community s Lorraine DellaFranco says the surplus of seniors in the area is due to a variety of factors but family is a big one. This is their neighborhood, says DellaFranco, who is senior vice president of sales and marketing for the Media facility. Many folks in this area stay here because this is the nucleus of their family. It s an environment they enjoy, and I ve found that a lot of folks who move to Florida end up moving back home to this area. Still, some are hesitant to explore these communities. We talk to people daily who keep saying, I m not ready for this, or This is not for me, says DellaFranco. Once they move in, they really start to blossom. They realize that their life is even more independent, they re more involved with programs, and they re going out more. Our seniors begin to realize just how much more is now available to them. When making such a crucial decision, a planned visit is key. Many people are looking to get the wow factor, but you have to look beyond the bricks and mortar, says DellaFranco. Look at the residents; see what they re involved in. Is there an open-door policy? Find out whether it s a for-profit or a nonprofit organization. Read contracts; read disclosures; ask the questions. Above all else, open and honest communication between seniors and family and family and healthcare providers is an integral part of creating a quality experience within an independent living, assisted living or nursing home environment. A community must fit both the needs of the resident and the needs of the family. It s really more about peace of mind for themselves and their family members, DellaFranco says. They have the security of knowing they don t have to leave campus if their needs increase at any time. The focus for these communities is more than just health service; it has a lot to do with nurturing their minds, bodies and spirits. MLT You have taste, integrity, respect for tradition. Already, we have a lot in common. Waverly Heights is a lifecare community that has met industry standards of excellence in management, financial stability, and quality of care and service. 5 The Ins and Outs of Downsizing Moving to a smaller residence is a priority for many Americans and rightfully so. A smaller home often means less maintenance, a reduced cost of living and a cozier atmosphere overall. But it doesn t always mean skimping on quality and amenities. A popular option these days, 55+/active adult communities offer a variety of amenities, conveniences and recreational options. When searching for a new home, consider the following checklist of features. Entrances and Exits Bright lighting inside and outside entries. High-visibility house numbers. Easy-open door locks, such as keyless locks with remote or keypad codes. Silently painlessly You may be losing your teeth. 7 Best of All Worlds With a stunning array of options at their disposal, today s discerning seniors can shop for a retirement community as if they were buying a house and when it comes to the area s rapidly expanding 55+ residential market, they may be doing just that. At some senior living communities, those seeking independence in safe, convenient, secure surroundings can opt for a cottage-style home or townhouse. Others offer spacious lofts and multi-room apartments for a cozier feel. Often it s the community as a whole that s the biggest selling point, since many are located on properties that are as visually impressive as they are vast, with amenities like golf courses, athletic clubs, resident-tended gardens and more. All foster independence while cultivating an environment of mutual respect, relaxation and growth among residents. Many offer assisted living and nursing options on an as-needed basis. Assisted-living communities keep residents active and entertained with everything from woodworking and music classes to animal companionship and art therapy. Most provide care for specific conditions, while offering short-term stays and rehabilitation services. For long-term, healthcare-dependent situations, a skilled nursing environment is also available in many cases. In January 2010, U.S. News & World Report compiled state-by-state rankings of the top nursing homes based on health inspections, staffing and various other quality measures. As it turns out, Philadelphia s western suburbs are home to four of Pennsylvania s best: Crosslands of the Kendal-Crosslands Communities in Kennett Square, Waverly Heights in Gladwyne, Wellington Terrace in West Chester and Rosemont s Golden LivingCenter. It s also worth noting that some communities offer prospective residents the option of a short-term stay to help with the decision process, and tours are always available /Active Adult Communities The Arbours at West Goshen Wisteria Lane, West Chester, PA 19380; (610) , westrumhomes.com/westgoshen Athertyn 5109 Parkview Drive, Haverford, PA 19041; (610) , athertyn.com Cold Stream Crossing 1144 Balfour Circle, Phoenixville, PA 19460; (610) , coldstreamcrossing.com Foxfield Ranches 3107 Poplar St., Garnet Valley, PA 19060; (610) , mckeebuilders.com/foxfield.asp Foxfield Villas 3107 Poplar St., Garnet Valley, PA 19060; (610) , mckeebuilders/foxfield-villas.asp Hershey s Mill 1500 Greenhill Road, West Chester, PA 19380; (610) , hersheysmill.org Jefferson Crossing 2519 DeKalb Pike, East Norriton, PA 19401; (610) , philomenoandsalamone.com Oakwynne House 1209 W. Philadelphia Reads phila.gov/philareads Reading volunteers are needed for in-school, after-school and summer. PROSTATE CANCER: 45 TREATMENTS VS. 5 TREATMENTS You decide. One in six men will develop prostate cancer. In the past, treatment options included surgery or months of radiation as many as 40 sessions or more. But now, there s a new option that s non-invasive and requires only five days of treatments. Philadelphia CyberKnife uses highly concentrated beams of radiation that are capable of targeting tumors more precisely than any other form of radiation currently available. There are no scalpels, no anesthesia and no recovery time. In fact, the outpatient procedure is painless and you re free to return to your normal activities immediately following each treatment. In the fight against cancer, there s a new weapon and new hope.
