4 UCSF Benioff Medical Children s Center Hospital Each year, families from throughout the world bring their children here seeking the expertise, innovation and compassion that make us one of the top children s hospitals in the United States. A leader in children s health: UCSF Benioff Children s Hospital San Franciso is ranked among the nation s best children s hospitals in ten pediatric specialties.* First in fetal surgery: UCSF physicians performed the first successful surgery on a baby in the womb and are leaders in the field of fetal diagnosis and treatment. Critical care for newborns: The Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery (ICN) was one of the first of its kind in the world. The 50-bed nursery cares for more than 1,000 infants each year. Breakthrough treatments: UCSF researchers discovered that a substance missing from premature babies lungs was the leading cause of death among premature newborns and developed a synthetic replacement that reduced related infant mortality in the developed world by half within two years of its introduction. Hope for brain-injured infants: The Neurointensive Care Nursery (NICN), opened in 2008, is the nation s first neurointensive care nursery. It offers specialized treatment for infants who show indications of brain damage at birth. Pediatric stroke center: The UCSF Pediatric Stroke and Cerebrovascular Center features leading experts who provide comprehensive care for childhood stroke. Stroke is rare in children and management of the disease requires many specialists and advanced techniques for diagnosis and treatment.
