The following data from the Uptime Institute Network s annual data center professional survey represents the top ten technology priorities for data centers in The findings provide insight on topics, such as modular/container, virtualization, cloud computing, DCIM, cooling and power efficiencies. Data center owners and operators from 100 companies participated in the survey Uptime Institute

3 10 Modular, Container, or Prefab 18% of survey participants selected modular, Container, or prefab as key technology initiative for Building a new datacenter using traditional on-site construction techniques is a slow and costly process. To speed deployment and reduce costs, a new generation of prefab modular/container data center designs are emerging. These new designs have the potential to reduce both capital and operating costs Uptime Institute

4 9 Diesel Generation & Regulations 20% of data center professionals cited diesel generation and regulations for New EPA regulations dictate the run times of emergency and standby generators. Emission regulations and generator upgrades are a source of concern Uptime Institute

5 8 Virtualization 25% of the data center participants will explore virtualization for Virtualization enables higher efficiency levels, reduced operational costs, and greater agility. Data center professionals will need to focus on the following areas of virtualization storage, computing, networking, and security Uptime Institute

6 7 Consolidate & Rationalize Hardware 25% of data center professional will consolidate and rationalize their hardware environment. Blade servers and consolidation software give the customer maximum flexibility to reduce costs and provide as much efficiency out of data centers as possible Uptime Institute

7 6 Cloud Computing 27% of data center professional say cloud computing is a key initiative for Cloud computing starts with a standardized and converged data center infrastructure. Organizations will be able to gain significant efficiencies by moving apps and data in a private cloud and in a public cloud Uptime Institute

8 5 Automation and Building Alert 31% of data center professionals will focus on automation and building alert systems in Traditional BMS offerings are being integrated into DCIM software. Still maturing, this segment of automation is crowded with options Uptime Institute

9 4 Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) 52% of data center participants say DCIM will be a critical technology initiative in DCIM can be effective at helping managers to adapt to technical and business change more easily; to reduce waste and unnecessary over-provisioning; to plan investments and new capacity; to reduce risk of failure; and to optimize energy consumption Uptime Institute

10 3 Power Monitoring & Metering 59% of data center professional will focus on power monitoring and metering. PUE and overall energy efficiency is getting C-suite visibility. Metrics to determine the efficiency of the data center are being requested Uptime Institute

11 2 Cooling Systems Efficiency 64% of the survey participants are exploring cooling systems efficiencies. Free cooling options and the use of variable speed pumps to increase efficiencies within the cooling system are becoming priorities Uptime Institute

12 1 Power Efficiency 71% of the data center professionals will spend time on improving power efficiency in the data center. Power efficiency projects are getting funding and executive visibility. The ROI and corporate good will on these projects is gaining momentum Uptime Institute
