1 Each book title has matching grade appropriate activities to help your child master skills tested on the CRCT. Simply click on a title, choose an activity and enjoy a learning experience with your child. These books are available at your local public library. These activities were created by the Mercer's Eastman Center EDUC 403 class. 2 Activity Four- Creating a Hotel Room Activity Five- Written Reflection Activity Six- Dessert Time Dear Parent(s), The following activities are ways for you to be a part of your child s education. Reading is a great way to learn! Also, listed under each activity is Georgia Performance Standards (GPS). Your child will be tested over these standards in the spring on the Criterion Reference Curriculum Test (CRCT). Activity One- Memory Book Pick a major landform in Georgia. Major landforms include:

3 Ridge and Valley-Lookout Mountain BlueRidge/Piedmont-BrasstownBald, Tallulah Falls, Pine Mountain, and Stone Mountain Coastal Plain- Okefenokee Swamp, Altamaha river system Take a trip to a major landform. While on the trip take as many pictures as possible! Be sure to take several pictures of which ever landform you chose, as well as anything interesting to you or your child. Have pictures developed and make a memory book of the trip with the pictures. While creating the memory book talk about the pictures, and how the landform defines Georgia. Under each picture help your child write a sentence or two about the picture. * SS2G1- The student will locate major topographical (detailed) features of Georgia and will describe how these features define Georgia s surface. Activity Two- Visiting Indian Mounds In the book Pictures from Our Vacation it briefly mentions going to a park where an Indian mound was located. The book does not specify the hills as Indian Mounds, but the concept related through the text could be used as a teachable moment. Take your child to the Indian Mounds located in Macon, Georgia at 1207 Emory Highway. Spend the day there learning about the Creek and Cherokee Indians culture.

4 For directions and hours of operation visit this website. ocmulgee_mounds.html * SS2H2- The student will describe the Georgia Creek and Cherokee cultures of the past in terms of tools, clothing, homes, ways of making a living, and accomplishments. Activity Three- Stained Glass Windows What you need: Dark colored construction paper Tissue paper in various colors Glue or Tape Scissors What to do: 1. Start by folding a sheet of construction paper in half, then in half again. Finally, fold it diagonally to make a triangle.

5 2. Cut out small shapes from all three sides of the triangle and from the bottom point. Encourage your child to experiment with different shapes, but make sure to leave some folded edges intact so that the window does not fall apart. 3. Carefully unfold the window. Glue or tape pieces of colored tissue paper over the open shapes. Then attach the stained glass window to a real window and let the sun stream through! (Talk with your child about the different shapes that formed in window.) * M2G1- Students will describe and classify plane figures (triangles, squares, rectangles, trapezoids, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and irregular polygonal shapes) according to the number of edges and vertices and the sizes of angles (right angle, obtuse, acute). Activity Four- Creating a Hotel Room Have your child use various items from around the house to transform his/her own room into a hotel room. This activity promotes creativity! Once the child has the room the way they want it, have play money and take turns being the consumer and the provider. This activity helps children practice counting money, and understanding the difference between goods and services.

6 * SS2E3- The student will explain that people usually use money to obtain the goods and services they want and explain how money makes trade easier than barter. Activity Five- Written Reflection Help your child write a summary telling about each activity in the order that it happened. Also, have the children tell which activity they enjoyed the most and why. Then, at the end have them compare and contrast the activities they did to the story. * ELA2W1- The student demonstrates competency in the writing process. The student a. Writes text of a length appropriate to address a topic and tell a story b. Uses traditional organizational patterns for conveying information (e.g., chronological order, similarity and difference, answering questions). c. Uses transition words and phrases. Activity Six- Dessert Time Enjoy the dessert they mentioned in the book which was strawberries with whip cream and make lots of memories.
