2 St Ives Schl Haslemere Anti Bullying Plicy Whle Schl Plicy including EYFS Plicy In line with ur value statement that every member f ur cmmunity will be treated with dignity and respect, St Ives Schl endeavurs t prvide an envirnment in which everyne feels happy, safe and secure. The aim f ur plicy is t encurage care and cnsideratin fr all - psitive behaviur is reinfrced and rewarded by staff and girls are praised fr cnsideratin and kindness t thers. The aim f the plicy is als t help members f the schl cmmunity t deal with bullying when it des ccur and, even mre imprtantly, t prevent it. We aim t teach girls t have integrity, tlerance and an understanding f what is meant by right and wrng and their rights and respnsibilities, whilst shwing sensitivity t the feelings, needs and rights f thers. Emphasis is placed n the imprtance f hnesty and truthfulness, being kind t thers and helping thse wh are less frtunate. Thus the schl is cmmitted t values f tlerance and respect fr thers, ppsing all frms f bullying. Bullying is damaging t thse wh experience it and t thse wh perpetrate it and, therefre, undermines the cmmunity. St Ives Schl recgnises that bullying is nt a specific criminal ffence. Hwever, there are criminal laws which apply t harassment and threatening behaviur and if staff feel that an ffence may have been cmmitted, the Head will infrm the plice and seek assistance frm them. All members f the schl cmmunity (girls, parents, teaching and nn-teaching staff) wrk tgether t ensure that if bullying cmes t light it is dealt with speedily and effectively. Our assemblies, the Persnal, Scial, Health and Citizenship prgramme and the applicatin f ther related plicies, including Pupil Care and Supervisin prcedures, frm a central part f ur strategy t prevent bullying. Recrds f any incidents f bullying are held n file by the Head and are reviewed regularly by her t ensure that any patterns can be identified and the effectiveness f the schl s apprach t anti-bullying evaluated. This plicy has regard t relevant legislatin and gvernmental guidance, and it applies t all in the schl cmmunity, including thse within the EYFS setting. St Ives Schl seeks t implement this plicy thrugh adherence t the prcedures set ut in the rest f this dcument, and is fully cmmitted t ensuring that the implementatin f the plicy is nn-discriminatry, in line with the UK Equality Act (2010). This dcument is available t all interested parties, including parents and parents f prspective pupils, n the schl s website and n request frm the Schl Office. It is reviewed annually by the Head, r as events r legislatin changes require. The next date fr review is June The plicy shuld be read in cnjunctin with the fllwing dcuments: Educatinal Visits Plicy This plicy is available t interested parties n the schl s website and is als available n request frm Receptin, in accrdance with the schl s Prvisin f Infrmatin Plicy. 2 f 10

Girls are tld that if they believe they are being bullied, r if they see smene else being bullied, they must reprt it t an adult in the cmmunity. Girls wh bserve bullying are tld t supprt victims by: Refusing t jin in Standing up fr the victim Pinting ut t the bully that they are bullying Shwing the victim kindness Telling an adult Teaching abut bullying in the schl is apprpriate t the age and maturity f the pupils. 6 will want t be part f a psitive, caring partnership with the schl 4. HOW SHOULD BULLYING BE REPORTED? Infrmatin abut bullying cmes frm a variety f surces, including parents, pupils, staff and members f the public. In all cases St Ives assures the child (r adult) that they shall be taking immediate actin t stp the bullying. Children are tld that if they have any cncerns at all abut bullying they shuld tell a teacher. If parents hear f incidents, they have a respnsibility t tell the schl. The schl will fllw up infrmatin t attempt t identify the bully where names are unclear. Where children are invlved parents are infrmed as sn as pssible, thugh smetimes sme leeway may be required in rder fr investigatins t be cmpleted. Depending n the nature f the allegatin, the class teacher r the Head f Schl r a cmbinatin f bth will deal with the situatin. As a rugh guide, the mre serius the allegatin the mre likely it is t invlve senir staff. Where the matter cncerns bullying f staff, the investigatin will take place at the apprpriate managerial level. (See Staff Handbk fr additinal infrmatin) All discussins will be cnducted fairly, giving all sides the pprtunity t state their case, s as t establish the truth in what seldm turn ut t be straightfrward issues. In all cases thse invlved will be warned nt t d r say anything that may prejudice their psitin regarding the member f the schl wh has been bullied. Except fr the mst straightfrward cases in which truth has been established and the matter has been reslved swiftly, discussins will generally be cnducted by the class teacher r Head f Schl. A recrd will be kept f the interview and what is said t be crrbrated. Ntes, bth rugh cpies and, where necessary, a brief summary and cpies f any letters sent t parents will be put n files with crss referencing as apprpriate. The Sanctins & Bullying recrd will be updated by the Head and cnsulted at regular intervals t check fr any patterns f bullying. Where the ffence cncerns nly staff, the apprpriate frmal grievance r disciplinary prcedures will be fllwed. See Staff Handbk fr further infrmatin Where the ffence invlves pupils, letters written t parents will detail the nature f the ffence and any sanctins impsed, and will set ut what imprvements the Schl expects t be made in behaviur (see Behaviur Plicy) as well as the cnsequences f failure t imprve. At the cnclusin f the investigatin, if apprpriate, ne f the members f staff invlved will cntact parents f any pupils directly invlved and infrm them f actin taken. Wherever pssible the identity f 'infrmers', and pupils ther than the sn r daughter f the parent will nt be disclsed. At all levels f the schl, bullying will be treated as a child prtectin cncern if the pupil is at risk f significant harm. 5. During the meeting, strategies t enable the child t vercme the incident (bth victim and bully) shuld be planned. A further meeting shuld then be arranged fr ne week hence in rder t discuss prgress. Subsequent meetings shuld be arranged fr as lng as the parents and /r the children need them. Please refer t Appendix 1 fr advice n wrking with parents. 6. RECORDING Even apparently trivial incidents shuld be reprted, because they help t create an verview f a situatin. In rder t identify patterns staff must recrd any incidences f bullying n the pupil nte system. Ntes recrded under the categry bullying will be included in the schl s electrnic Sanctins & Bullying Recrd. This recrd is kept by the Head in her ffice. This recrd is reviewed by the Head t help evaluate the effectiveness f the schl s apprach t anti-bullying and t enable patterns t be identified and apprpriate preventative actins taken. If sanctins are impsed these are be recrded in the Sanctins & Bullying Recrd in the Head s ffice. All schl staff must take care t treat cases f suspected incidences f bullying that are reprted t them seriusly, and t take prmpt and apprpriate actin. The type f actin will depend n the circumstances. In practice the sanctins applied t pupils range frm a lss f Privilege Time, verbal warning t temprary r permanent exclusin, depending n the gravity f the ffence and the pupil's previus recrd with reference t bullying. 7. COUNSELLING When children d have prblems they feel angry, upset, frightened, cnfused r embarrassed. They need a chance t air their views and feelings r t be helped t d s. Cunselling children in these instances requires certain basic skills. These are: being genuine - a sense f hnesty which attracts trust - in cunselling, a teacher s interest in the child s wrries must reflect an hnest cncern an uncnditinal psitive regard - shwing children they are accepted, valued and respected withut any precnditins. Rejectin by the teacher will create barriers and will prevent effective teaching and learning. One technique t shw psitive regard twards a child wh is This plicy is available t interested parties n the schl s website and is als available n request frm Receptin, in accrdance with the schl s Prvisin f Infrmatin Plicy. 7 f 10

It can help children cpe with an nging prblem which is utside their cntrl and can help reslve r minimise prblems / behaviur presented in class. CONCLUSION It is the aim f the schl is t ensure that there is a cntinuity f apprach thrughut the schl with regard t Anti Bullying, Child Prtectin and safety. 9 APPENDIX 1 ADVICE TO TEACHERS ON BULLYING WORKING WITH PARENTS Recgnise that the parent is generally under a great deal f stress. Even if the parent expresses anger and directs it twards the schl, remain understanding. Make it clear that yu d care and will d what yu can t reslve the situatin. Try t get the facts clearly established but d nt crss-examine r unduly emphasise incnsistencies. Pint ut that yu will need sme time t investigate the matter. Be specific abut a time limit and make sure yu tell the parent when and hw yu intend t cmmunicate yur findings t him/her. Make sure the parent is clear abut the schl s plicy and prcedures fr dealing with bullying and als make clear the schl s philsphy in supprting all pupils wh have been invlved in a bullying incident. It may be necessary t make clear that the schl des nt (unless the bullying incident was very serius) have a punishment system but that, whenever pssible, it tries t ffer supprt and guidance t bth the victim and the bully. The parent f the victim culd have a prblem with this and such an apprach ften needs explaining with great sensitivity.
