2 AWLC Feature Artist June 2012 Kevin Hopkins Born in Liverpool (UK), Kevin studied at the Liverpool College of Art and the University of Coventry. He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Art with honours. Kevin was trained in the highly demanding art discipline of a portrait painter Since 1994 he has been teaching art and design to Cambridge International Examinations in international schools in Kenya, Ethiopia, Bangladesh, India and Mexico. Kevin has spent the last three years in Lima. Upon arrival he decided to return to his passion and began full time painting in his studio in Surco. Kevin mainly works in oils and is a great admirer of the masters or old, taking inspiration from the likes of Vermeer, Degas, Waterhouse. His hero however is Rembrandt, whose attention to details and capacity to capture light and moods perfectly, keep him in awe time and time again. In his own words: I am distrustful of the seemingly dishonest art world out there today and I am in search of the more sensitive approach to painting that sadly seems to have been forgotten. 4 AWLC Feature Artist July 2012 Christian Burgos Christian was born in Lima, Peru in He was accepted into the National School of Fine Arts in 1986, where he studies Fine Arts over 6 years. He was recognized especially in the fields of oil painting and drawing and has exhibits his work in Peru and abroad. He is a member of the GRUPO MILLENIUM. Although Christian mainly works with oils, he never neglects the possibilities of artistic expression through other media. He is currently taking his inspirations from female faces, and thereby returning to his classical roots of figurative painting, while not losing sight of the abstract.. He combines the figurative with the abstract to achieve a mythical depiction of the common portrait theme. In his own words: "I strongly believe in the communication with a world beyond ours, especially when I am creating. In these moments we can almost become transcendental messengers for those in this world, thereby we can in fact positively affect moods and awaken consciousness. 6 AWLC Feature Artist August 2012 Li NingNing (Julia Plunckett) Born in Beijing, China, Ning Ning (which means Little Peace) studied at the Beijing Foreign Studies University, cradle of Chinese diplomatic training, specializing in languages. She majored in English. One of her teachers, a Californian, had trouble remembering her beautiful Chinese name and re-named her Julia, after her sister. Her latent artistic talent briefly appeared some years before entering university. During the Chinese Cultural Revolution, when families were divided and sent to the Provinces, one of NingNing s sister, Xiau Bo, who was to care for farmers as a barefoot doctor near the border with Burma, lacked medical books.ning Ning would go to the Beijing library, hand copy texts, and sketch muscles and organs etc., and mail these to her sister for study. Art was hence more of a must under the circumstances, but by no means a desire. Following administrative and sales positions in China with Bank of Montreal, she spent a few years in Australia before migrating to Lima. She experienced her artistic awakening six years ago when her husband asked for a description of an old wooden cabinet she spotted in the Surquillo market. She quickly sketched it on notepaper leaving him dumbfounded by her ability. Then she became lured by the Marinera, Peru s most famous folkdance, and championed twice in the Master category. Finally back to painting in 2011, she has developed her talents via books and DVD s, and lately, with classes on the Internet. In her own words: ( ) a good painting should be about something, a focused concept behind it, which impact on the viewers and move them more. There are so many different approaches and types of concept in the history of painting and up to this date. I prefer paint a subject which makes me feel some feelings and touches my heart. 8 AWLC Feature Artist September 2012 Andrea Zegarra-Ballón Andrea was born and raised in Lima, Peru. In 2001, she was accepted into the program of Visual Arts at the School of Fine Arts AC. She graduated from there in 2006 and continued her academic development in 2008, when she was accepted into the Faculty of Arts at San Marcos University. Along with being an artist, she has also been working in education since One of her greatest passions is the teaching of painting and drawing to both children and adults. Although Andrea specializes in oils and drawing, she is not a stranger to using a vast variety means to express herself artistically, including collages, watercolours and mixed media. Her work is continuously evolving in her quest for new ways of expressing herself artistically. Her style is best described as eclectic and free. Her current interest is in the female image and the mysteries that surround it. She aims at creating new ways of interpreting feminine as a symbol to transport the viewer of her work into different emotional spheres. In her own words: "It's very rewarding to pass on my knowledge of art to others and to learn from my pupils and their concerns and creativity. I believe that art serves as a great way to escape from reality enabling people to express themselves freely, without limits or restrictions. It is the best way to know our inner world. 10 AWLC Feature Artist October 2012 Alex Castañeda Paulino Alex was born in 1985 in Lima-Peru. He started his art career in 2003 at the Universidad de Las Americas Puebla, in Puebla- Mexico. He studied one year in Mexico and then returned back to his home land Peru (2004). Once there, he entered the fine arts school Corriente Alterna and graduated in Alex s work varies from 10 feet oil on canvas paintings to oil painted wooden skateboards. Most of his work is based on the human body, from the female nudes on skateboards to the women and monsters on his big canvas pieces which he renders with a touch of classicism as a nod to the old masters. This reflects his admiration for masters such as John Singer Sargent, Joaquin Sorolla and Anderns Zorn. Alex s work also touches local political themes dealing mainly with corruption and the abuse of authority. Apart from being an accomplished painter, he works as a freelance CG illustrator. 12 AWLC Feature Artist November 2012 Eduardo Deza Eduardo can be contacted on: Eduardo was born in Lima in While still in high-school, he began his formal artistic training at the Museum of Art of Lima, where he took his first life drawing and portraiture classes. Later on, after five years of study, he graduated with honors as an Associate in Arts from Pasadena City College, in Pasadena, California. While studying abroad he got exposed to various cultures and people as well as artistic trends. He chose to become a figurative painter due to his lifetime love for the human figure and its representation throughout art history. He has shown his work nationally and internationally, such as in Los Angeles, Miami, Berlin and his work is in collections in Belgium and the U.K. In his own words: My work has always dealt with the exploration of human nature, of the human condition. Whether through the metaphor of myths, legend and folclore, or using concepts borrowed from symbolism, alchemy and religion; my goal is to always express something deep within my heart and soul, whether it is something that concerns me, worries me, scares me, or something that brings me peace and solace or that moves me emotionally, in hopes that this will resound with the spectator. I chose the figure as my vehicle of expression because it is a difficult subject to master and I pay special attention to the rendering of the skin, using the techniques of both the old masters and more modern ones, always with oils. I firmly believe that human beings are the greatest subject matter there is.
