2 READING COMPREHENSION AND VOCABULARY Read the following passage and answer questions 1 10 below. Edward Hopper s painting Nighthawks of an American diner is one of the iconic images of American art. The 1942 work is a physically large and emotionally powerful piece highlighting the isolation alienation of urban life. The diner itself, seen from the exterior, is lit by harsh white light that sharply illuminates not only the three seated customers and the cook behind the counter, but also elements in the interior environment, such as the salt shakers and coffee urns. The stark brightness of the interior emphasizes the empty blackness of the vacant windows in the dark street. Many of the themes found in Nighthawks appear in his other work, although his vision is far from limited to that lonely diner. Glimpses of everyday life emerge, marked by strong dark and light contrasts. Windows are shaded or black, unless they are lit but empty. Even his beach scenes are marked by long shadows. His works bring to mind the solitary, with individuals or buildings standing in isolation. His figures are not elements in some dramatic tale: we don t know their stories and they seem in no mind to tell us. Although his career spanned some 60 years, many of these themes remained present in his work, right up to his final picture, The Comedians. Painted in 1966, it depicts Hopper and his wife as clown figures, taking their final bow from a dark stage. The flat starkness of his work was the product of careful composition, in which can be discerned traces of his early training and professional experience as a commercial artist. Hopper never worked directly from life, but planned his canvases from extensive sketches he made while on the road. His travels never took him far, so he was intensely familiar with his subject matter, juxtaposing disparate elements such as urban architecture with rural landscapes.
