1 Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools Foundation Inc. SPRING 2017 St. Kateri Holy Mary St. Nicholas Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools Foundation supports our six new schools with sacred space funding In the preliminary planning of the P3 schools, it was important to the division that a space for prayer reflection and an outward sign of our faith be a prominent part of the school design. This space became known as a Sacred Space. In the new schools, these spaces are connected to a student commons area, so that the commons area can be used in conjunction with the sacred space for class liturgies, reflection/prayer time or other faith-based activities. We are now excited to outfit these areas. We have been fortunate to work with Ron Blais at Holy Cross High School and Phil Rapin at St. Joseph High School. Along with their students, they will design and construct the altars and a crucifix for the sacred spaces. This is so exciting, as it is a great way to have our greater school division community add to the legacy of the new schools. We are appreciative of the support of the GSCS Foundation. 2 Laurie Karwacki, Foundation Board Chair Foundation Board Chair s Message Happy spring! This time of year is truly a time to celebrate. We have been fortunate at the Foundation to spend some time in several of our schools, witnessing our staff guide our students in their faith journey. I am sure I speak for many staff when I say that sharing our Catholic faith with children impacts our own journey. It may be a single student experiencing an aha moment, or an entire student body singing a favorite hymn. It is a time we all feel God s presence. When one enters one of our Catholic schools, there is a definite feeling of faith, of hope, of love. A sincere thank you and God Bless to all of the GSCS staff, for creating that faith feeling, and even better, putting that feeling into action in the many ways you do! 3 Director of Education s Message #faithinaction. There is a natural human tendency for us to examine things, describe them, categorize them and order them to understand their Greg Chatlain, Director of Education rules and how they work. That is all fine and good; however, for some things, if we stop at that level, then we risk missing its essence. Faith, I believe, is one of those things. We tend to try to understand it more academically, which is important, but to stop there only gives us half of the picture. Our W faith has a very important active aspect to it, for faith devoid of action is not what Jesus modelled. In Catholic education, we tend to do academics fairly well as we are all educators in our various roles. However, we are challenged to support faith in action so that students can experience the full measure of understanding. Thanks to the Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools Foundation, our schools can access supports that help enable these experiences of faith in action. Through the creativity and dedication of our staff and our community, the Foundation helps us fully examine how faith is lived each and every day. Without their support, we risk depriving our students of half of the picture of faith. So as we work to put our faith in action and reach out to transform the world, we sincerely thank our partners in the Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools Foundation for your help in providing the complete picture of faith. May God continue to bless the wonderful work of the Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools Foundation and Catholic education. e all have the duty to do good. 7 The CWL Clothing Depot Board would like to thank the high school students who have chosen to volunteer at our depot for their Christian Ethics service hours. Work at the depot gives them the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and understanding of the needs of those less fortunate. Students interact with the public, other volunteers and staff in loving service. Christian Service Hours We ask you to think about us when donating your gently used items. Teaching students to donate their excess or no longer needed items is another way for them to learn charity. We would like to thank the students and parents who have donated in the past. 10 DID YOU KNOW.. Foundation Grant Projects Reports Twenty schools applied for and received grants for their Rosary Clubs and forty-four School Projects received funding for a total of $69,000! All as a direct result of the Schools Win Twice Raffle! St. Bernard School Students had the opportunity to engage in and experience a self-directed student retreat with the theme Becoming a Saint, that enhanced their spiritual development. January 18 was the anniversary of the canonization of St. Bernard so they incorporated their school patron saint into the retreat. Our priests and youth coordinator from Holy Spirit Parish as well as members of the diocesan community were invited to be presenters for some of the sessions. Students actively participated in experiences such as stained glass art to create banners that have sayings of St. Bernard. With the help of the Foundation grant, the school was able to purchase St. Bernard medals for every student in the school. Father Robinson School Student retreats are an integral part of the lifelong faith formation of young people and offer students an opportunity to experience the love of Christ through organized faith centered activities. Father Robinson staff and students participated in a retreat titled, Strengthening Christ s Works and Mercy with Pure Witness Ministries in January. The students learned about God and how He has mercy on His people and how we His people, in turn are to show mercy to one another. The rosary grant funds assisted in enhancing the prayer room space. Upon entering the prayer room, one will immediately see external signs of our faith through images, icons, symbols, liturgical cloths and other objects of devotion and faith. This prayer space is not only more inviting, it is rich in Catholic identity and is a quiet space reserved for reflection, devotion, reading and prayer used daily by staff and students. PAGE TEN

11 Foundation Grant Projects Reports continued St. Angela Staff and students were very fortunate to have had Pure Witness Ministries in their school for a school wide retreat on Ash Wednesday- March 1st. They gathered as a school in the beginning to sing and pray together. Throughout the day the activities were geared toward varying age groups- utilizing the same theme, Every Person s Identity in Christ - EPIC. Every group learned about the great work of St. Pierre Giorgio Frassati - that he donated most or all of his money to people he saw as more needy than himself, and as a result he became accustomed to giving his train-fare to the poor and running back home or riding in third class. He began serving the needy at a very young age and often told his friends when they questioned him; I am not helping them; they are helping me. The retreat was a great introduction to how they, as a school community, can reach out during the Lenten season to help those less fortunate than themselves. Sharing Faith Stories I had a chance to sit with a student over the lunch hour as he was having a very difficult time complying with any requests from the supervisors. I could tell that something was bothering him and he opened up about home not being the best place right now. The student has had a ton of stress that he brings from home and specifically with his mom and her relationships. This is the current stress for the student and, unfortunately, he often manifests this internal battle with defiant and non-compliant behaviour. I asked the student if he was praying about all of this and he shared that he does not believe in God anymore. I could tell that he was very angry. I asked if it was okay if I prayed for him and his family, especially his mom, and he was surprised at my question. We had a good chat about our school motto, and how love, forgiveness and hope applies to this situation. He thanked me for praying for his family. I ed the staff, updated them about his situation, and made the following request: Please say a prayer for this young man to find calm and understanding in a situation that he has no control over. Thanks. Syd Figora St. Maria Goretti Community School I had a student who was sent to my office because of disruptive behaviour in the classroom. He was working in my office and when it was lunchtime, I invited him to pray. I held his hands and asked for God s intervention to help him control his impulsive behaviour and to help him be the best that he can be. We then prayed for the food and for it to nourish our bodies. He sat still with his eyes closed and asked if he could pray with me when he was feeling upset! What a blessing! Maria Monteiro Principal St. Maria Goretti Community School PAGE ELEVEN
