5 RICK TURNER, Director of Adult Education Programs ~ As part of our Light Commercial Residential Maintenance program, students study the fundamentals of HVAC. Here the students are recovering HVAC chemicals from old appliances. Scrap metal will be donated to benefit the Lima Warriors fundraiser.
6 Honda of America s Lindsay Rippingale, Recruiter and Mike Hoyng, Staff Engineer spoke for well over an hour to about 60 Diversified Industrial Training students during professional development. The students were all ears as Honda explained their new Co-op program for full-time certificate students and predicted the company will have at least 200 full time positions in the next ten years due to attrition. The Honda spokespeople said these are all high-tech positions and starting salaries for an entry level employee are about $52,000 plus benefits annually.
7 Area daycare representatives attend Prevent Blindness Ohio training at Apollo. The program enables daycare centers to train to be able to screen preschool children s vision. The turnout was very strong.
8 It was the final few days of class for our latest group of Nurse Aide students. Here they are reviewing proper technique when moving a patient from their bed into a wheel chair. Students practiced using both Sara Lift and mechanical lift equipment. It was moving day for Apollo ABLE/GED staff. As construction gets ready to begin, Adult Education has moved the ABLE/GED day classes to Forest Park United Methodist Church in Lima
9 Students of our English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) enjoying a carryin lunch as this marks their last class in the Adult Resource Center for at least a couple of years due to upcoming construction! Early Childhood Education student Connie Green conducts story time for a group of young children as part of her course requirements. This is the picture of the stage at the awards ceremony for the 2014 BPA State Leadership Competition held at the Franklin County Veteran s Memorial Center. The awe from the students is so evident as the curtain slowly opens and they see in another way how important this event is. The top ten students in each competitive event are called to the stage by name where each winner receives an award ribbon. The top three receive trophies. All students should be proud to make it to state, but to win and attend nationals is a bonus. Apollo BPA is always well represented.

19 Straight A Energy Grant News: Mrs. Stein and Mrs. Brown The Straight A Energy Grant is a grant through the Ohio Department of Education. The lead school for this grant is Springfield Clark Career Center. There are five other participating schools from the Dayton area. There are two lead teachers and two student leaders from each school. One important part of this grant is training students through peer interaction. They are taught by the student leaders from the lead school. The grant was designed to bring energy awareness education and efficiency back to the community and schools. The student leaders are provided with the equipment and knowledge to educate others. The grant is sponsored by The Energy Optimizer Company, which is located in Troy, Ohio. They will do an audit for each school s HVAC and lighting in April. Each school will also receive a classroom full of high efficiency LED lighting. Students are: Tristan Edwards, Christian McCarthy, Eddie Aguirre (who all competed in Food Innovations, Senior division-placing 1st and qualified for state), Dylan Holcomb, Logan Alexander, Joey Glick (who all competed in Sports Nutrition, Senior divisionplacing 1st and qualified for state), and Karina Aguirre (who competed in Food Innovations, Junior division- placing 2nd and is an alternate for state).
21 Media Center News: Lila Whyman, Media Center Specialist Sheryl Maier has been busy writing short summaries of books and putting them on the Media Center Face Book page. She has also taped them on the book on display in the Media Center. The students seem to like them! They have been checking the books, with the summaries, more frequently.
