The College is currently seeking part-time and full-time candidates to teach within the Nursing Department: Nursing (180) Program description: Program profile and course descriptions: Course Descriptions 180-A30-HR Maternal-Newborn Nursing (Prerequisites: 180-D25-HR; 101-H20-HR; 350-H08-HR) This course includes the basic nursing concepts required to care for families within the maternal-newborn hospital/community setting. The student will develop an understanding of growth and developmental tasks and events, lifestyle, pathologies and nursing problems related to the perinatal and neonatal period in a multicultural society. The concepts of ethics, rights and responsibilities, collaboration with others and social involvement are addressed within the context of maternal-newborn care. In the laboratory and clinical setting, the student is taught the knowledge and skills relevant to the specific pathologies and nursing problems. 1
2 180-A35-HR Pediatric Nursing (Prerequisites: 180-B20-HR; 180-D25-HR) This course includes the basic nursing concepts required to care for children and families within the pediatric hospital and community settings. The student will develop an understanding of growth and developmental tasks and events, lifestyle, pathologies and nursing problems related to the pediatric client in a multicultural society. The concepts of ethics, rights and responsibilities, collaboration with others and social involvement are addressed within the context of pediatrics. In the laboratory and clinical setting, the student is taught the knowledge and skills relevant to the specific pathologies and nursing problems. 180-A50-HR Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing (Prerequisites: 180-B40-HR, 180-C40-HR; 101-H40-HR; 180-B15-HR. In January 2016, 180-D40-HR replaces 180-B40-HR and 180-C40-HR) This course teaches concepts related to the care of psychiatric/mental health clients. In the theory, and clinical settings the focus is on assessment, communication techniques and pharmacology. Clinical settings include hospitals providing care for the psychiatric/mental health clients. The student must consider ethical and legal implications, personal and professional values, conflict resolution, as well as collaborate with the multidisciplinary team. 180-A55-HR Gerontological Nursing (Prerequisites: 180-B40-HR, 180-C40-HR; 101-H40-HR, 180-B15-HR In January 2016, 180-D40-HR replaces 180-B40-HR and 180-C40-HR) This course teaches concepts related to Gerontology, Loss of Autonomy, Rehabilitation & Palliative Care. In the theory, clinical settings, the focus is on the normal physiological changes of the aging process, functional assessment for rehabilitation care, disease specific problems in the aging population, and in providing care in the continuum of care services for the elderly population. Clinical settings include hospitals, and rehabilitation centers. The student must consider ethical and legal implications, personal and professional values, conflict resolution, as well as collaborate with the multidisciplinary team. 180-A60-HR Nursing Integration (Prerequisites: 180-B50-HR; 180-A50-HR; 180-A55-HR) This course focuses on the consolidation and application of all previously learned theory within an adult medical-surgical setting. The goal is to increase the student s autonomy, organization and prioritization of client care. The concurrent theoretical component, which combines concepts related to care of the client, professionalism and nursing practice, is designed to assist the student in preparation for the evaluation by the Quebec Professional Order of Nurses in order to obtain license to practice Nursing in the province of Quebec. Upon completion of this course, the student can then advance to the final course requirement 180-C60-HR (Nursing Preceptorship). 180-D10-HR Introduction to Nursing The student will learn the concepts basic to the role of the professional nurse. The student will learn and begin to apply the nursing process Allen/McGill Nursing Model, and critical thinking. The concepts of personal and professional growth and responsibilities will be explored. The student will be introduced to the Canadian and Quebec Health Care System. In the laboratory setting the student is taught nursing procedures which form the foundation of nursing such as the clinical examination. In the chronic care clinical setting the student will have the opportunity to apply the theory, skills and attitudes taught in theory/lab. The student will demonstrate safe application of assessments and interventions relating to hygiene, VS, feeding, clinical assessment, therapeutic interactions, infection control, the identification of complication of immobility and sage clinical practice. The student will demonstrate understanding the role of the nurse and the responsibilities of a nursing student. 2
3 180-B15-HR The Helping Relationship The student will learn, apply and appreciate the use of therapeutic communication in order to optimize the nurse-client relationship and understand how this affects the psychosocial and physical well-being of the client.references to the client, nursing, environment and health will be based on the McGill Model. 180-B20-HR Pharmacotherapy and Nursing (Prerequisites: 180-D10-HR; 101-H10-HR) This course introduces the basic concepts of pharmacology with an emphasis on clinical application within the context of the Nursing Process. The student will examine the general classifications of medication, explore the indications, action and effects of drugs, as well as, method of administration, contraindications and interactions of drugs. The student will learn specific nursing responsibilities essential for safe drug administration. 180-D25-HR Perioperative Nursing (Prerequisites: 180-D10-HR; 180-B15-HR; 101-H10-HR; 180-H05-HR) The theory, lab and clinical components of this course focus on the basic nursing skills and physical examination techniques related to caring for the surgical client pre-operatively and post operatively. The student builds upon the framework of the nursing process to improve assessment skills. The fundamental concepts of health promotion and teaching methods are applied. 180-B30-HR Health Teaching (Prerequisite: 180-D25-HR; 180-B20-HR; 101-H20-HR; 350-H08-HR) This course teaches concepts related to client teaching/learning concepts incorporating knowledge from all previous courses in semesters 1 and 2, to develop various health promotion activities such as, pre and post-operative care; pre- and post-natal care, nutrition, smoking cessation and immunization with various clientele/age groups/developmental levels. Responsibilities of accurate reporting and documenting are reviewed, including charting in acute care setting. Students also study the nursing role in discharge planning, and the collaboration required between various health sectors in order to ease the admission/discharge transition. 180-B40-HR Medical-Surgical Nursing (Prerequisites:180-A30-HR; 180-A35-HR, 101-H30-HR; 180-B30-HR Co-Requisite: 180-C40-HR) This course teaches concepts related to care of the adult in a medical-surgical clinical setting. The nursing concepts taught include: common medical and surgical problems and potential complications. There is an emphasis on the roles, relationships and responsibilities of the multi-disciplinary team; ethical dilemmas and the study of situations affecting the quality of adult life. The course emphasizes decisionmaking and the factors influencing the ability to make choices. In theory and lab, nursing procedures related to the care of the adult are taught with emphasis on nursing process and collaborative problems and the TNP. The interrelationship between medical diagnosis, medications, treatment and diagnostic testing is explored. 180-B50-HR Emergency Measures (Prerequisites: 180-D40-HR; 101-H40-HR) This course provides the student with the opportunity to learn about his/her role during client crisis or emergency situations. It addresses the legal implications related to emergency measures as well as touches upon legal obligations of nurses. It allows the acquisition of necessary knowledge, skills and critical thinking to facilitate intervention during common first aid situations. The student is also introduced to the diverse emergency protocols in health care institutions which relate to their client care. The course includes theory, and lab practice which use clinical simulations. 3
4 180-B60-HR Issues in Professional Nursing (Prerequisites: 180-B50-HR; 180-A50-HR; 180- A55-HR) This course is condensed over 7.5 weeks (instead of 15). It is designed to assist the graduating student to prepare for the workplace through examination of issues affecting the novice nurse. The Task Oriented Model is taught in the first few hours of the course and students are expected to apply its principles while working on their terminal group project. At the beginning of each class, current social/political issues are discussed and related to the field of nursing practice. Referring to the Allen/McGill Model, and using the template from the required textbook; economical, historical and political/sociologic factors influencing nursing and the health care system are addressed. Strategies to affect change are discussed. The legal rights and responsibilities of clients and of nurses, including scope of practice, and professional accountability are explored. The goals and functions pertaining to professional associations and unions are explored. The development of the profession and strategies to affect change are discussed. Other contemporary issues such as violence in the workplace, leadership, environmental health, nursing shortage, substance abuse by professionals, and entry to practice are also examined. Job opportunities and educational requirements for advanced practice fields are presented. 180-C10-HR Introduction to Nursing-Clinical (Co-requisite: 180-B10-HR) In the chronic care clinical setting the student will have the opportunity to learn the theory, skills and attitudes taught in 180-B01-HR. The student will demonstrate skills relating to basic care, physical assessment, therapeutic interactions and clinical judgement. The student will begin to understand the role of the nurse, the nursing process and the responsibilities of a nursing student. 180-C20-HR Perioperative Nursing Clinical (Prerequisites: 180-B10-HR; 180-B15-HR; 180-C10-HR; 101-H10-HR; 180-H05-HR Co-requisite: 180- B25-HR) In the adult surgical clinical setting, the student applies related theory, skills and attitudes while utilizing the nursing process and the therapeutic nursing plan. The student increases professional responsibilities, including communication with the health care team. The student continues to build on and incorporate values related to personal and professional growth. 180-D40-HR Medical Surgical Nursing (Prerequisites: 180-A30-HR; 180-A35-HR, 101-H30-HR; 180-B30-HR) This course teaches concepts related to care of the adult in a medical-surgical clinical setting. 5 180-C60-HR Nursing Preceptorship (Prerequisite: 180-A60-HR) Nursing Preceptorship is a clinical experience which integrates the knowledge, skills and attitudes acquired during all previous courses in the Nursing Program. It is designed to facilitate the transition from the role of student to that of graduate nurse in collaboration of the Health Care Team. Clinical settings include hospital and ambulatory care services settings. The focus of the experience is on social integration into the work place, application of theory to practice, decision making and mastery of psychomotor skills. An integral aspect of the preceptorship is the ability of the student to assume responsibility for his/her own learning. Job Duties In a general way, the professor's teaching load shall include: preparation of course outline; preparation of classes, labs or field work; teaching classes, labs or field work; adaptation; support and supervision of students; preparation, invigilation and correction of examinations; revising of corrections at the student's request; keeping abreast of recent developments in his/her field of work; participation in pedagogical days organized by the College; participation in departmental meetings and its other required activities; participation, when required, in program committee meetings; student tutoring or monitoring activities, mainly those duties accomplished by professors in help centers or during student welcoming activities. Qualifications Minimum of a Bachelor s degree in the appropriate field of specialty. AND Several years of teaching experience at the undergraduate or college level is preferred. Fluency in English, both oral and written is required. Ability to: Create a dynamic, challenging, and motivated learning environment. Adapt to a variety of student needs and provide appropriate academic and career development support. Utilize excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Demonstrate knowledge of subject matter through academic or non-academic experiences. Apply theoretical concepts to current workplace needs and skill requirements. Provide assistance and display leadership in the on-going development of the Nursing at Cégep Heritage College. Stay abreast of changes and new program requirements through regular professional development activities. Language requirement: Mastery of English, both in oral and written. 5
