2 #BioBas Bio-Economy A challenge for developing Southern Italy and Mediterranean Area The Europe 2020 strategy identifies the bio-economy as a key area for smart and sustainable Europe development. Advances in research and innovation will enable the sustainable management of renewable bio-resources and the opening of new markets for food and biological-based resources industry. Bio-economy breaks down the traditional wall between agriculture and industry, building a new relationship between these two worlds based on innovation and on the sustainable use of natural resources for new industrial activities. Bio-economy fundamentally changes the traditional manufacturing approach: no longer one, but several products from a single feedstock. Bio-economy rests on two pillars: 1. A competitive agricultural system, of fundamental importance, that produces raw materials in the form of biomass; 2. Industrial technologies, able to fully utilize the biomass to obtain different products that can be placed along the segments of the pyramid of the value, such as, from the top to the bottom: drugs, nutraceuticals, cosmetics, biopolymers, bioenergy. The two days event aims at focusing the attention on the issues of bio-based economy and innovation as potential key factors for the economic development of the regions of Southern Italy, in the new European strategy for 2020, the new programs such as Horizon 2020 and the Regional Structural Funds. The event is organized as a follow-up conference Bio-economy 2014 (TOBE 2014; held in Turin in early October 2014, to explore the potential of the bio-economy and the implications for the regions of southern Italy in a Mediterranean dimension. The meeting will analyze the European and national scenarios and will provide an opportunity for meaningful comparison of national experiences present in some Italian regions with other important experience in certain areas of Europe. Research institutions and industrial agro-food companies that are already active or wish to develop R & D projects in biotechnology will participate as well.
