BROWN MINNEAPOLIS TANK PAGE 1 OF 7 PURPOSE: Create and Drawing Uniformity Create, explain, and establish a standard bill of materials to be placed on every drawing (except the overall tank elevation and plan drawings) used or created in BMT s organization. PROCEDURE: Bill of Materials Use The scale of the drawing itself and how it relates to the bill of materials should remain unchanged. The general layout of the bill of materials is shown above and should not deviate in any way. Step#1: Type attedit into the command line of AutoCAD Step#2: Select the?? in the top left corner of the bill of materials (top right corner or the drawing). Step#3: Piece mark designation. The piece mark designation will consist of the drawing number and an upper case letter, for example for an assembly piece mark designation on drawing 8 will be as follows 8A; all components of an assembly shall have a lowercase letter for example a piece of flat bar which would be a component of the assembly 8A will be designated as a.
BROWN MINNEAPOLIS TANK PAGE 2 OF 7 Step#4: Description. This is the assembly, or piece of an assembly, description. When describing material call out material designation and length on the bill of materials only. The drawing will simply show the piece mark where in the bill of materials the piece may be identified. Piece marks are not required at section cuts or auxiliary views except as necessary for clarity. When inputting into a bill of materials the description will always be in the architectural format. In the bill of materials only, the dimensions will not be stacked for outputting to database reasons. The thickness will always be in inch or fractional inch formats unless decimal plate is being used, for example plate ordered direct from the mill, then a decimal format for the material thickness will be acceptable. The width will always be in an inch format even when the width becomes greater than 1-0. The length will always be in a feet and inches format even when the length is less than 1-0. When inputting into a bill of materials the description will always have a feet marking when necessary, inch and fractional inch will be implied and assumed. For example: PL x 82 3/8 x /4. A short abbreviated description shall be placed here. The description shall be brief enough to be understood and thorough enough to be understood by a fabrication shop. The abbreviations will not be limited to the list below. Please do not deviate from the below listed abbreviations for items listed: : Diameter of a Circle. For Example: FLG # FF SO #: If preceding an abbreviation or number it shall represent the word number. If following an abbreviation or number it shall represent pounds. For example: XSS PI 3 x /4 LG Structural shapes are preferred to fabricated shapes, unless fabricated shapes will be less expensive to create than structural shapes including man hours and material expense. For all steel plate and structural steel shapes CS may be assumed unless otherwise specified. Use FB not PL designation for the following sizes: 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 3/4, 1 thickness x 1, 1 1/2, 2, 2 1/2, 3, 3 1/2, 4, 4 1/2, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, and 12 widths. Others maybe used also if there will be more than 20 in length to be used on the project. For example, a large quantity of FB 3/16 x 3 bar may be required for the job.
BROWN MINNEAPOLIS TANK PAGE 5 OF 7 When in doubt use a FB designation (except for 1/4 or 3/4 increments, i.e., 1/4 x 1 3/4, which are rarely available except in large quantities). When specifying flat bar, round bar, square bar, tubing, pipe, and angle always list the length required, even if length is greater than 20 for the desired piece mark. When specifying flanges remember bolt/nut/washer/gasket kits may be required for flange connections. When inputting angle for the bill of material the longest leg shall be input first, followed by the shorter leg, followed by the thickness, followed by the length as follows: L 6 x 3 1/2 x 3/8 x When calling out plate, such as shell plate, which cuts from a larger plate, the piece mark shall be the exact, cut and squared, plate required for the shell. Directly below the piece marked plate will be an non-piece marked plate which will be the non-cut, non-squared plate the piece marked plate shall cut from, as shown below: 4A PL 1/4 x 95 1/2 x /16 CTL CF 1/4 x 96 x 30-0 LG This is especially useful when multiple shell plates are cut from single shipped pieces. Step#5: QTY. Quantity of assemblies or pieces of an assembly required for the tank or for the assembly. The quantities section of the bill of materials will always specify the number of pieces required for the piece mark being input regardless of how many sections the piece mark will require to make up that piece mark. Inlet/Outlet/Overflow Piping may require flanges at section seams for lining considerations. Section seems will usually occur at 20-0 lengths since pipe will be to hard to line if pipe lengths become greater than Typical steel products will be in 20-0 or 40-0 section lengths. Step#6: SPEC. Specification or grade of material needed for the individual piece of an assembly. Below is a list of abbreviations, which may be used in the specification section of the bill of materials. For all steel plate and structural steel shapes CS material may be assumed unless otherwise specified. AXXX-XX: High grade, high tensile stress, or modified steel. The first 4 characters describe the ASTM designation there will be a hyphen then grade designation, for example A will represent A516 grade 70 plate. CR: Cold Roll Steel. CS: Carbon Steel, minimum of Mild Steel Grade A36, other higher-grade steel may be used for this piece mark but is not required.
BROWN MINNEAPOLIS TANK PAGE 6 OF 7 HR: Hot rolled Steel. MOD: Modified Steel. This abbreviation must be qualified by a note or statement describing the modification done to the steel. SS: Stainless steel. STD: Standard Weight Pipe Designation. XS: Extra Strong Pipe. XS PI 3 x /4 CTL XSS: Extra Extra Strong Pipe. XSS PI 3 x /4 LG Step#7: REMARKS. This will include an abbreviation to bring attention to unique care needed for the particular piece being described. Some of these abbreviations are listed below: : Diameter of a Circle 1-2: 2 Pieces May Be Cut From 1 Square, Rectangular, or Circular Piece of Material AR: All Around BO: Buy-out Items BV: Bevel CBE: Cope Both Ends COE: Cope One End DL: Drill Holes (only if required) DT: Drill & Tap Holes (only if required) FC: Field Cut for Best Fit FF: Field Fit H: Holes (shop to determine process required to create holes) MI: Miscellaneous MBE: Miter Both Ends MDL: Match Drill Holes
BROWN MINNEAPOLIS TANK PAGE 7 OF 7 MOE: Miter One End NPT: National Pipe Thread PH: Punch Holes (only if required) SW: Socket Weld TBE: Thread Both Ends TH: Tell Tale Hole TOE: Thread One End Step#8: Weight of total assembly or assembly component being depicted. The weight shall always be in pounds. Step#9: When the piece mark for the drawing have been input, select OK in the bottom left hand corner of the dialog box by clicking on it and you are done and ready to proceed with the rest of the drawing. Comments on the Bill of Materials standard, which have been considered: The bill of material can be imported and changed for different scales. Having the quantity before or immediately after the mark identification can be confusing in the shop if the mark identification is miss-read as a quantity or vise-versa. An attribute box for a single line of the bill of materials will be incorporated. The designations and abbreviations for material call outs will conform to AISC, ASTM, and Fabtrol standard steel designations. The grade of material being called out may be specified in the description part of the Bill of Materials and if special attention needs to be drawn to the specific grade of material on an item the specification part of the bill of materials may be input.
