2 UMMC Training for JPS Health Academy Teams July 30-31, 2015 The University of Mississippi Medical Center will provide a training experience for Jackson Public School employees engaged in development of health academy curricula for high schools. Training at UMMC will occur over the two-day period of July 30 and 31, 2015 and is expected to involve eight teams of 5 JPS employees (hereafter, participants) each. Participants will be engaged in activities designed to address three major areas related to health education. A brief overview of health related professions will be provided by members of the UMMC faculty, including certificate, baccalaureate, professional, and academic degree programs. The participants will also engage in hands-on training available at UMMC for health related issues and use of innovative technology for the development of classroom content (multimedia equipment and programs, flipped classroom content modules). Finally, didactic lectures and discussions of important health issues, both local and national, will provided. Upon completion of the training, participants will be able to: Demonstrate increased awareness of the breadth of educational paths for health professional careers at an academic health science center; Recognize key resources available for counseling students toward career opportunities that do not require a terminal professional degree; Show familiarity with successful models of inquiry-based, interaction-intensive health career preparation curricula; Create health professions orientation curriculum outlines that incorporate contemporary, technology-enhanced flipped classroom/flipped learning principles; Identify current major health initiatives on local, state and national levels, including obesity and cardiovascular diseases, health disparities, antibiotic resistance, and vaccines; Identify teacher-oriented activities that enhance success rates in obtaining additional external funding support for curriculum innovation; Generate professional networks within JPS schools enacting health academy programs that facilitate development of common, and highly effective, health related learning paradigms; and Develop evaluation criteria for health academy teachers that emphasize professionalism traits evocative of a health career.
