1 Department of Interdisciplinary Studies Bachelor's, Master's and Ph.D. Programs Online All the Time A Year of Growth and New Initiatives The Department of Interdisciplinary Studies continues to excel in offering state-of-the-art, high quality distance education programs for health professionals desiring to expand and enhance their career offerings! During this past year, the faculty have designed new, innovative programs beginning at the baccalaureate level through the Ph.D. Enrollments for existing programs have greatly increased. Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences (BSHS) Beginning in the Fall 2014, the BSHS program will launch two new tracks: Aging and Health Advocacy. For the first time, non health professionals will be able to enter the BSHS program and prepare for a career caring for our aging population or becoming a health advocate. NEW! Aging Track -- The goal of the Aging track is to prepare students with content for healthy living and management of disease in older adults; social policies for older adults, and knowledge of the resources and skills for the inter-professional health care team to most effectively care for the aging population in our community and beyond. To meet this goal, students are provided with a program that includes courses in Approaches to the Older Adult, Social and Health Care Policy, Mental Health and Aging, Nutrition and Aging, Health Promotion and Aging, Managing Disease in Older Adults, to name a few of the outstanding online courses offered as part of this degree. To compliment this major, students may minor in either psychology or sociology. All students participate in an aging related capstone practicum. NEW! Health Advocacy Track -- Students in the Health Advocacy track are provided with the skills necessary to eliminate or help patients and care givers navigate through the common health care, social and community barriers and associated financial, legal, cultural and communication challenges. Students learn how to advocate for their patients, clients, and care givers. Courses related to Health Advocacy include Patient Advocacy and Health Care, Mediation and Conflict Management in Health Care, Crisis Management in Health Advocacy, Leadership in the Health Professions, Communication Techniques and Health Care. All students participate in a health advocacy related capstone practicum. 2 Master of Science in Health Care Management The Master of Science in Health Care Management (MSHM) was started by the School of Health Related Professions approximately 15 years ago in response to a multitude of feedback from students and graduates from clinical programs, requesting a program emphasizing health care management and leadership skills. To keep pace with the dynamic nature of the health care landscape, the program curriculum underwent a major revision in Today, the MSHM is a 30-credit, online program with a curriculum specializing in health care management, administration and leadership. The program is best suited for those already working within health care organizations seeking to further advance and broaden their careers within the industry. Hence, the curriculum targets competencies to enable graduates to help hospitals and other related organizations succeed within today's challenging health care environment. As a result, the program offers courses in management and leadership, budgeting/finance, quality assurance, human resources management, government affairs, legal issues in health care, and other related skills. Students are required to demonstrate the ability to synthesize and apply in a real-world environment, the knowledge and skills acquired through their coursework in the form of a capstone project known as Graduate Project. The program director, Dr. Al Heuer, Ph.D., MBA, RRT and the Program faculty have highly relevant and accomplished backgrounds in health care management, administration and regulation, as well as education and research. For those who wish to increase their expertise in the area of health care research, there is an individually tailored track. The program provides an excellent foundation for those interested in doctoral education. NEW! Aging Track -- The MSHS in Aging is designed to provide a strong aging foundation to meet the demands of health professionals who work with the ever-growing aging population. The online courses are taught by faculty who are dedicated to high quality education and health care. Health Professions Education Track -- Regardless of the setting: classroom, online, clinical, or community, teaching students to become health care professionals requires special skills for faculty. These skills include: Understanding the unique learning styles health professions students bring to the classroom
3 Applying appropriate pedagogy based the audience, setting, and course content Utilizing appropriate direct and indirect measures to assess student learning Designing and managing health professions courses Utilizing the latest educational technologies Participating in development of health professions curricula Mentoring or precepting students through their didactic and clinical program Developing these teaching skills and providing opportunities to apply these teaching skills is the hallmark of the Interprofessional Health Professions Education Program. Integrative Health and Wellness Track -- Integrative Health and Wellness is designed for health care practitioners and administrators to learn about evidence-based Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) modalities and integrative health care practices. Students have the opportunity to interact with faculty and student colleagues in a variety of health-related disciplines. The Integrative Health and Wellness (IHW) masters degree program is a thirty (30) credit masters degree. IHW students complete specialized courses in complementary and alternative medicine concepts. All students are required to complete a graduate research project to fulfill requirements for the degree. The IHW masters degree in health sciences is designed provide a strong CAM foundation to meet the demands of clinicians and administrators in the ever-broadening health care industry. The online courses are taught by our experienced and dedicated faculty in the Departments of Primary Care, Interdisciplinary Studies, and Institute for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. Faculty are experts in their field with many years of professional and educational experience, including the delivery of high quality, student-centered, online education. The MS degree in Integrative Health and Wellness is designed for: Health care practitioners must be licensed or certified (where applicable.) This includes, but is not limited to: dentistry and allied dental services; dietetic services and nutrition science; diagnostic imaging; emergency medical and acute care/life support technologies; health and medical assisting; medical laboratory technologies; medicine; mental health services; nursing; optometry; pharmacy; physical, vocational and psychosocial rehabilitation therapies; communication disorders sciences; speech pathology. Health care professionals and administrators include individuals working in community health services, public health, epidemiology, health informatics, health services management/administration, and health-related research. Licensed or certified practitioners of complementary and alternative (CAM) therapies will be considered for admission. The overall MSHS program consists of an inter-professional core of courses which includes Data Analysis and Interpretation, Research Methods, Evidence Based Literature Review, and Health Services Issues and Trends or Health Care Policy. In addition to specialization courses for the featured areas/tracks, the program allows student to select courses from a list of electives including but not limited to: health care ethics, health care law, management and leadership, strategic planning and quality management. The courses are offered online in either 8-week or 15-week blocks. The program culminates in a capstone project, which if approved, may be conducted at your institution or company.

To that end, the program emphasizes the rigorous application of research and scholarship as the basis for identifying and addressing the many issues and questions arising in our complex health care delivery and health-related workforce education systems. The Program is an interprofessional program with students from many health-related disciplines. NEW! Health Leadership Track -- Entry into the Health Leadership track is competitive and is most appropriate for health care professionals already in management/leadership positions seeking to further develop their knowledge of, and ability to apply the theories, skills and strategies of leadership. The central model of the health leadership track is that Leadership is a process through which individuals intentionally influence human systems in order to accomplish specific goals. Inherently, leadership occurs at all levels of an organization, not just by people at the top and is critical to organizational agility, effectiveness and success. The study of leadership, therefore, is centered on the characteristics, styles, traits, skills and competencies that leaders exhibit. The leadership track is designed to provide a foundation for the study of leadership principles, practice, theory and the global concept of leading health care organizations across interconnected, interprofessional disciplines.
