1 IEEE DELHI SECTION ANDROID APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP 7-8 November 2015 With the advent of technology, human life has undergone a substantial change. Apps have become an indispensable part of our lives. Each and every need of our daily routine has been packed into a nutshell called an Application. Thus to help students evolve as an application developer, IEEE Delhi Section organized a twoday Android Application Development Workshop which focused on student retention among student members as part of IEEE India Strategic Initiative Student Retention Project on 7 th & 8 th November,2015 at Northern India Engineering College. DAY 1 7 th November 2015 Attended by more than 100 enthusiastic students from various colleges of Delhi and NCR, the session started with an introduction regarding the purpose of the event, followed by the speaker Mr. Tushar Varshney familiarizing the audience with the need of android app development. The learning process began with the students installing the required software packages. Appropriate Directions were given for the installations of software packages supporting different operating systems. Students were taught to make command buttons and uploading background pictures for their apps as a first move. The Speaker encouraged the participants by stating that further explorations in android application development will give better outcomes and thereby one can easily become an expertise in this field. Many students exercised the speaker s words creating some simple applications which was quite appreciated. The

2 participants were made comfortable as the trained volunteers ensured that they were bereft of any kind of difficulty. A loud cheer and jollity filled the air when a Wheelchair controlled by an android application, built by IEEE-NIEC for partially paralyzed, entered the auditorium. Tushar Varshney introduced the Sensoduino app available on Google Playstore and taught how to interface Arduino UNO to an android application to make it work with Physical objects around. The alacrity of the participants knew no bound as they tested the working of the wheelchair by sitting and controlling it. The idea of making a basic application without sufficient java programming on the very first day of workshop gave immense pleasure to the participants. The day concluded as the participants returned with great zeal and much more aspirations for the ensuing day. DAY 2 8 th November 2015 The second day started with a briefing of the day s schedule. The participants were warmed up by a revision of previous day s insights. It was followed by a session dedicated to Web View, Scroll View which is crucial for a developer to access a link over a web page and to scroll the pages in an application respectively. Moreover, the introduction of Splash Screens, insertion of mp3 track in an application was a delight to the audience. Followed by a session on parse.com API Real Time Notifications, being an indispensable part of commercial applications like flipkart, myntra, Ola et al. Volunteers bustled throughout, to meet all the requirements of the participants, making tireless efforts to solve the doubts of the participants.

3 Considering their magnum opus, the participants learned how to upload the apps designed by them on Google Playstore. This was followed by a guest lecture Life Appified by Shamik Ghosh, Business Editor, Telematics Wire, sharing his acumen and rudiments on the use of android applications and a tremendous bandwagon that it has created in the commercial world. He also gave Statistics related to the dominance of Android development compared to the ios and other application development platforms. IEEE Awareness session by Vivek Goyal, Chairperson, IEEE-NIEC marked the concluding session of the event, which aimed at disseminating the participants about the benefits of IEEE such as scholarship programs, publications, contests and of that ilk. CONCLUSION IEEE Delhi Section has always impinged upon the technical education for all the right reasons. This time, working in tandem with Northern India Engineering College, successfully organizing an Android Application Development workshop in the campus of NIEC. An event imbued with the merriment of developing android application and interfacing it with real-world objects was elevated a thousand folds by a jaunty audience, thanked with Refreshment Food in the end which was sponsored by IEEE Delhi Section. IEEE Delhi Section along with volunteers of IEEE-NIEC, did tremendously well in coordinating and training the volunteers as implied by the positive feedbacks given by the participants.

4 The Team got overwhelmed by tremendous response from the participants ie around 60 working apps at the end of workshop, These will be uploaded on the Playstore account of IEEE DELHI SECTION. IEEE-Delhi Section looks forward to organize more such technical events in future and will continue to toil towards creating a technical atmosphere.
