MAGAZINE EXTRACT: Price Power Review First published April 2014 Here at SBC we review many new tipster services, publishing our findings via detailed reports which are found in our regular betting magazines. In the following example, we tackle the Price Power tipster service in a review first published in April Don t forget either that the Secret Betting Club is 100% independent, so you can be assured that what we say is the honest truth. Unlike other review services we do not take fees or a cut of sales for writing a positive review. REVIEW: PRICE-POWER REVIEWER: NICK WARD HIGH TURNOVER RACING SERVICE WITH STRONG SEVEN YEAR HISTORY Service Name: Price Power Contact: Declan Lawless Website: [email protected] Sports Covered: Horse Racing Bet Frequency: 6 per day Pricing: 95/175/250 for two/four/six months, or 395 for full year SBC Discount:20% discount for all SBC members Bet Delivery: and/or text Service In Brief: High turnover racing tipster focusing exclusively on longer odds selections (10/1+) 12% ROI achieved in over 14,000 bets and seven years of tipping. Service in Detail: Founded in 2007, the Price-Power service is co-ordinated by an ex-bookmaker with over 30 years in the business, now plying his trade on the other side of the fence: Over the years I have built a vast database of knowledge, know-how and contacts. I set up Price-Power to ensure all that was not lost and for the family team around me to develop our concentration on value betting In their own words, the UK and Ireland based team is relentless in its pursuit of big winners and dedicated to helping the small stake punter realise the enjoyment and excitement associated with this. The service has shown a remarkable level of consistency over its long history both in terms of its unwavering approach and in the accumulation of profits, with each calendar year delivering good returns. In practical terms, the service is relatively straightforward to follow. Tips are sent out via two s delivered at precisely 12:00 and 1:15 pm each day; there is also the option to receive tips by text at no extra charge. Three tips are provided in each , i.e. six tips in total on a daily basis, seven days a week... indeed, the team never seems to rest, as they ordinarily follow this strict regime on every single day of the year on which racing takes place in the UK and Ireland! One key feature of the service is that no bets are advised under 10/1: We found over the years that it s pointless betting on favorites and short priced horses as it s hard to retain any rise in profit, even though they win more often there is not much of a return to sustain any losing runs. FAVOURITES DO LOSE. So while we were making a profit on the bigger prices we were wasting a lot of that profit on shorter ones. We made the cut off point 10/1 to see if it would make any difference and we ve seen a consistent rise in profit over the years. Page 4
Every day we look for horses with value, which in our opinion is the only way you can win at horse racing. The idea is always about beating the SP and therefore having an edge. We are looking for horses that our analysis and information suggests can run bigger races than their price suggests. At such big prices you are often going to be wrong. But the satisfaction of getting it right is enormous. When Very Wood won at 50/1 for us at the Festival, it was a great feeling. All bets are advised 5 Each Way at a wide variety of high street bookmakers more on this on in our Odds Availability section later. Advice is kept very simple, with only information on the selection, advised price and related bookmakers, provided we ve included a recent example below: Starkie (Crl) 2.40 Fairy 5 12/1 (VC), Rev It Up (Crl,Sky) 4.10 FfosL 5 10/1 (VC), Double Irish (Tote,Boyle) 4.20 Fairy 5 16/1 (SKY) Subscription costs are, in our opinion, very reasonable, considering the large volume of tips provided and the consistently strong long-term performance. Options are available from two months ( 95) right through to an annual subscription at 395, with increasing savings built into each of the longer-term deals. The Yearly subscription also comes with an added free month, so its effectively 395 for 13 months. As an SBC member you can also save a whopping 20% on all subscription fees. For anyone wanting to briefly trial the service to test out whether it suits them in practical terms or for others who maybe can only bet at weekends or certain days of the week - there is also the option to obtain the days tips via text on an ad hoc basis, for 1.50 per day. It s worth noting, however, that these messages are sent out at 1.30, later than the main subscriber base, which may mean you miss out on the advised prices in a number of cases. Service Proofing: Our proofing began relatively recently, in December 2013 but, as a member of the SBC team subscribed to this service for a number of years before joining us, we have confidence in the validity of the full history of results since service launch in July Service Results: A full set of results is available on the Price-Power website. For analysis purposes, we have included all results from the start of the service (27/5/07) through to the end of March Overall, the service has advised a huge 14,125 bets at an ROI of 12.0%. Over the near-seven year history, the total Return on Capital stands at an impressive 850.7%, equating to just over 120% on an annualised basis (based on a 2,000 point betting bank). In other words, even betting selections at a modest 5 each way has lead to a typical profit of 2,400 per year, assuming you could achieve advised prices. The strike rate has remained very consistent throughout the life of the service 6.9% of bets have won (i.e. just under 1 in every 14 bets), whilst almost a quarter of selections were placed (23.4% - including winners). This year-on-year consistency is borne out by the ROI results; the worst year (2009) still achieved a solid 8.6% ROI, whilst the best year was 2011, with an ROI of 16.9%. We also looked at how the selections performed if betting them Win only (10 point level stakes) - see table below. In the long-term, betting Win only gave us a further uplift of around 3% extra ROI, although anyone taking this approach would need to be a pretty cool customer to handle some extremely long losing runs, and also increase their betting bank size accordingly. Bets Profit ROI Each Way 14,125 17, % Win Only 14,125 21, % Note that we also looked at betting the selections Win only at Betfair SP, but found the results to be only marginally profitable at just under 2% ROI for the extensive sample we analysed. Betting Bank: Whilst the longer-term picture shows an unerringly upward trend, there have been some relatively sizeable and lengthy drawdowns along the way, inevitable given the long odds focus of the service (average price = 20.0). The largest drawdown, by some distance, was points over a seven month period from 22/8/10 to 24/3/11 (1178 bets). It took a further 393 bets (over two months) to subsequently reach a new high on the P/L curve. Other notable drawdowns were points (Nov-Dec 2012) and points (Jul-Sep 2009). Page 6
Anyone looking to add this service to their portfolio really needs to think towards a medium/long-term horizon, and experience suggests, should be prepared to stick things out for at least six months to mitigate against the risks of short-term variability. We would recommend a 2,000 point bank to cover this. Price-Power themselves have advised a 500 point bank in the past, but said they d reconsider this in the light of the statistics presented above. The drawdown table to advised stakes can be found below... Additional Analysis: We conducted some further analysis to look for particular strengths and weaknesses in the service. Three particular areas stood out for us: All Weather betting has been unprofitable to date. Selections under 12/1 have been only marginally profitable. The biggest profits have been seen on the busiest days of the week (Fri/Sat for UK and Sunday for Irish racing). We tackle each of these in turn, in a bit more detail, below. Racing Code: To our minds, the most interesting finding is that Price-Power s All Weather selections have failed to make an overall profit in the last seven years. This is in sharp contrast to their performance in National Hunt racing and on the Flat (turf), with excellent returns of 12.5% and 18.6% respectively. The Price Power team didn t have any definitive thoughts on this but, for those of you perhaps looking to reduce the volume of bets, this breakdown may prove useful. The sample range of 2,829 bets and 300 pt loss do strongly suggest the All Weather should be avoided. Bets Profit ROI AW 2, % Flat 4, % NH 4, % Note: Analysis based on large sample of bets (87% of total) for which we were able to cross-match detailed race information from an external source Page 7
Performance by Odds Band: In the analysis below we split the data into five groups to see how selections at different odds performed. We found that the ROI increased in line with larger odds, with the bottom group (10/1 to 11/1) only just breaking into profit (ROI =1.2% from 2,857 bets). Odds Bets Profit ROI 10/1 to 11/1 2, % 12/1 to 14/1 4, % 15/1 to 18/1 2, % 20/1 to 25/1 2, % Over 25/1 1, % Performance by Day of Week: We don t normally put much stake by this sort of analysis as more often than not, any apparent differences by day of week are likely spurious and seem counterintuitive. The table below shows reasonable profits throughout the week but we wanted to highlight the particularly strong results for UK racing on Fridays and Saturdays. We did a similar split for the Irish selections and found that Sunday was the stand-out day (26.8% ROI from 562 bets full analysis not shown here). UK Racing Bets Profit ROI Mon 1, % Tue 2, % Wed 2, % Thu 2, % Fri 1, % Sat 2, % Sun 2, % This may, of course, be down to natural variation or as Price-Power fairly responded I m not sure why it s better. There are plenty of things you could point to like better meetings, higher prize money etc. We work hard to find big winners 7 days a week but our own pet theory relates to the betting regime (6 bets/day) the service follows. Could it be that the busier racing days (Fri/Sat in the UK and Sundays in Ireland) give the team a wider pool of potential value bets to select their chosen six from, with a resultant boost in profitability? Price Movements: Finally, we took a look at steamers vs. drifters, defining steamers as any horse that shortened in price from advised price to industry SP. We found that an impressive 75% of selections were steamers, and the overall average SP was 15.5, well below the average advised price (20.0), backing up the earlier quote from the Price-Power team and helping to demonstrate the clear edge this service has achieved over a number of years. Bookmaker Policy/Odds Availability: In the chart below, we ve summarised the range of advised bookmakers for a sample of selections recently followed by our tester, Michael. Almost half the selections Michael followed in Feb/March of this year were available generally, i.e. at several UK bookmakers, whilst Victor Chandler and Stan James were the most commonly quoted bookmakers when the price was only available in a couple of places. The sight of the likes of Stan James, Boyles and Skybet in the bar chart will no doubt strike a note of concern with many of you and, to our minds, being able to get on at the advised price may well prove to the biggest challenge for potential subscribers. We put this point to Price-Power: Page 8
We advise a stake of 5 each way on each bet, which keeps many members under the bookmakers radar. There have been members who have had problems getting on, but we haven t quizzed them about their stakes or how many accounts they use. Some members are using a mixture of bookmakers and exchanges which seems to be going well for them. For those of you who do have a decent array of bookmaker accounts, you should generally be able to get on at advised prices to small stakes provided you strike your bets soon after receiving the 12:00/1:15 s. Michael also looked at how the odds held up roughly one hour after being advised (sample of 206 bets): 5% had better odds one hour later. 63% had the same odds one hour later. 32% had worse odds one hour later. Service Practicality: The service is straightforward to follow and may suit those of you limited to betting at lunchtime. Tips are sent out via two s (three tips each time) delivered at 12:00 and 1:15 pm each day; there is also the option to receive tips by text at no extra charge. Customer Service: Price-Power strikes us as a very professionally run and reliable service. As we mentioned earlier in our review, one of the SBC team subscribed to this service for a number of years before joining us, and has reported back very positively on the standards set and customer service provided. Service In Summary: It s unusual to find a service which has managed to combine high turnover and excellent performance over such a long period of time. The service s unwavering approach and consistent success is highly impressive and the Price-Power offering is something that Sean, Declan and colleagues should be rightly proud of. This service will likely be of most benefit to those of you earlier in your betting careers and would certainly suit anyone with decent access to a range of UK bookmaker accounts looking to gradually build their betting funds using small stakes to try to keep under the radar for as long as possible. Page 9
In our analysis section, we ve highlighted a number of strengths and weaknesses which we hope you can put to good use. It may be that the more experienced bettors amongst you can build a strategy around this and make use of exchange prices in the early afternoon to build an alternative approach, relying less on the high street bookmakers to profit from Price-Power s tips. Even allowing for these caveats (bookmaker accounts/small stakes advised), we think Price- Power offers an excellent option for those interested in betting on racing. We would certainly recommend this service and are happy to add it to the SBC Hall of Fame. 11 MAGAZINE EXTRACT: Soyloco Review FIRST PUBLISHED JULY 2014 As a second example of what you can expect to read about in our magazines, here is a recent review of the Soyloco football tipster service, first published in July This review helps to highlight the depth of analysis we cover for each tipster that comes under the SBC microscope! Whether it be the staking plan, betting banks or availability of the odds that any tipster quotes, we tackle it all to help you understand just how profitable a tipster really is. REVIEW: SOYLOCO REVIEWER: ROWAN DAY SOUTH AMERICAN TIPSTER WITH RICH PROMISE DATA ANALYSIS: NICK WARD Service Name: Soylocoportiamercia Website: & [email protected] Bet Delivery: & SMS Sports Covered: Football Bet Frequency: Around 100 a month Pricing: 50 euro/month SBC Discount: n/a Service In Brief: A football tipping service specialising in the South and Central American leagues with some additional picks given in the Copa America, Copa Libertadores, and international matches involving the countries of this region. Service in Detail: Soylocoportiamerica, or Soyloco for short, started life tipping on the Blogabet ( tipping site back in July It concentrates mainly on bets just under the Evens mark (average odds 1.94, strike rate 58%) and primarily utilises the Asian Handicap lines. On occasion additional bets are provided in the Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) markets although results are not kept as part of the official record and are seen very much as a bonus offering. Please note that this review concentrates purely on the performance of the football tips issued. Soyloco consists of one tipster who is prolific in his tipping there have been an average of 96 bets issued each month through the 26 month period we have analysed service performance. The most oft-quoted bookmaker is Pinnacle and on the odd occasion that Pinnacle is not offering the line recommended, SBOBet is the most commonly used fall back option. In the early days of the service, Bet365 was frequently advised as a bookmaker to use but this now happens very rarely. In fact we can say with certainty that Soyloco can be followed using exclusively the larger Asian books Pinnacle, SBOBet, 12bet, and 188bet. The price for the service is 50 Euros per month, payable through the Blogabet site. Please note that to do this you first need to open a Blogabet account. Should Soyloco fail to provide a profit in the month subscribed for, then the following month s selections are provided free of charge. Service Proofing: Full proofing to the SBC started in mid-march of this year, but all bets are reliably and accurately archived on the Blogabet site with results going back to July Service Results (All Bets): For the purposes of this review, we are assessing performance of all picks issued from April This covers a total of 2,514 bets that to officially advised prices has produced an ROI of 7.7%. The following table breaks this performance down for you: Performance Summary Bets Stake Wins P/L ROI ROC % 382.5% % 119.7% % 89.9% Total % 592.1% Note: Analysis covers period from April 2012 to May 2014 inclusive. ROC based on 80 point bank. Wins includes "half-wins" on Asian Handicap bets % of total bets When looking at the results we were very impressed by the remarkable level of consistency achieved. Of the 26 months of results under inspection, 24 of those months returned a profit: Monthly Performance Bets Stake P/L ROI ROC Apr % 93.5% May % 84.9% Jun % 30.4% Jul % 30.9% Aug % 68.7% Sep % 39.0% Oct % 12.6% Nov % 12.6% Dec % 10.0% Jan % 28.3% Feb % 8.0% Mar % -32.4% Apr % 14.0% May % 26.8% Jun % 6.0% Page 12

To hit 592.1% in just 26 months of tipping is quite extraordinary and demonstrates better than anything the potential that this tipster has to offer his subscribers, provided they can get their bets on at acceptable prices. This is something we explore later in this review. Service Results (Stronger Bets Only): One thing we have noticed when conducting our analysis of Soyloco's results is the stronger level of performance attained by those picks carrying a stronger recommended stake, i.e. 3 points or more. The following two tables help showcase this nicely. Firstly is the overall performance since they started, which reveals how the profits and ROI increases the greater the staking. It should be noted that 1 point bets although making a good ROI are rare with only 113 in total. Performance by Advised Stake Bets Stake P/L ROI 1 point % 2 points % Page 13
3 points % 4+ points % Note: Standard 2 point bets have only achieved marginal profit, with nearly all the profit coming from more confident bets (staked at 3 points or more). 1 point bets are a more unusual feature, only occurring on Brasil bets, generally in Jan13/Jan14. Breaking this down further into a comparison of 2012 results against those in 2013/14 is also very useful as the table below shows. Staking back in 2012 was generally a lot higher, with a lot more bets issued through this period that carried a stake of three points or more. Some bets even carried as many as nine or ten points! Performance by Advised Stake vs. 2013/ Bets Stake P/L ROI 1 point % 2 points % 3 points % 4+ points % point % 2 points % 3 points % 4+ points % To further illustrate this change, below you can see how the number of 3 point bets dropped off between 2012 and 2013: Clearly this looks like the service has been evolving its staking since launch and appears to have settled on a consistent pattern with mostly 2 point bets, coupled with the more profitable 3 and 4 pts. Even if we focus our attention on the results for exclusively, we can still see a large discrepancy between the performance of the 3+ point bets and the rest. It certainly appears that a strategy involving backing the stronger bets only does look to have the potential to significantly increase the levels of ROI achieved when following this service, but that s not to say the 2 point bets are worthless and ought to be summarily discarded. They show a profit - albeit a small one - over a good sized sample of bets and at the very least they may help to reduce levels of variance and make the path to long term profit that little bit smoother. We would advocate following all Soyloco bets if subscribing, regardless of stake size. Page 14
Betting Bank: We can see from the graph below that the deepest drawdowns thus far have reached a total of 40 points. Using the traditional method of doubling the size of the biggest historical drawdown, and having run and analysed the findings from our own simulator, we recommend a bank of 80 points. If more aggressive in approach, then a point bank is suggested but please be aware of the inherent risks involved if adopting such a strategy. Odds Availability: This is a very important part of the review, so please read carefully! Through the period of 18 th April 2014 and 16 th June, 2014, we employed one of our testers to see how realistically achievable were the officially advised odds used to record results. From a turnover of points staked over a sample of 190 bets, using just Pinnacle and SBO, our tester achieved an average of 97% of the recommended prices contained in each sent to subscribers by Soyloco. Although on the face of it this doesn t sound too bad, it should be noted that if continued over a lengthier period of time, the effect on the ROI levels achieved would be significant. It s true that to get close to the officially advised odds on each selection, bets must be placed immediately upon release. Our odds testing showed that kick off odds averaged 96% of the odds stated in the , marginally worse than those achieved by striking the bets as soon as the tips hit the inbox. Of course there is the option of waiting for the in-play markets to open on bets that are negative on the handicap lines, but this may not be practicable for many when accounting for the difference in time zones between South/Central America and Europe (more about this shortly). 16 Suffice to say, how successfully you follow Soyloco will be largely dependent on how quickly you can place the bets once they have been published. Certainly it is true that although the limits offered on the relevant lines by the likes of Pinnacle and SBO are adequate, the odds are slashed within just a couple of minutes of bet release time. In conclusion, we think it advisable to factor in a possible reduction of 3-4% on the 7.7% historical ROI at quoted prices, depending on when you are able to get on. Service Practicality: Tips are sent out daily by . If there are no bets on a particular day, then an is sent to inform members that this is the case. Although there is no set time for bet release, the majority of s are received between and UK time. Bearing in mind what has already been said about odds availability, the lack of an official window makes the task of following Soyloco profitably just that bit harder. It is worth noting that a minute warning is given via prior to release of the first tips. This also states which league the bets are to be placed in so that you can load up the relevant pages on the bookmaker s site in anticipation. Picks are then released just two or three at a time to ease the burden of placing bets quickly. Workload is relatively high with the service generating an average of 96 bets per month, so it isn t for those members who prefer a quiet betting life! Customer Service: We ve had relatively few dealings with the chap behind the Soyloco service and to be fair, the service runs smoothly enough for there to be no pressing need for regular communication. It should also be noted that English is not the tipster s first language, and it does seem that he s quite happy to let his results do the talking for him. He is also very reliable in terms of sending out an end of month spreadsheet which details all the selections given to subscribers in the month just gone. Just don't expect to receive written explanations on each bet or detailed s from him. Service in Summary: There is a lot to like about the Soyloco service, not least of which is the fact that it has built up a decent record of performance over a large number of bets since its inception. Although the official ROI of 7.7% lies below the 10% we tend to look for as the benchmark of an outstanding service, the relatively high turnover of bets through the year means there is the potential for ROC figures achieved by following to be strong. Historically this is the case with 592% since 2012, although this has dropped in recent years and if applying a reduction for odds availability, may well sit in the range of 50-60% in an average year. There are however some downsides to the service, which isn t the most straightforward to follow profitably. The lack of a defined tipping window is one factor that counts against Soyloco, especially as it is difficult to obtain close to the advised odds of each selection. Indeed, if following all bets, the level of reduction that can reasonably be expected in achievable ROI levels would mean that the service is only just on the right side of the profit and loss line, given the performance to advised odds through 2013 and This suggests, although we really need a bigger sample of data before we can draw more solid conclusions, that the most efficient way to follow Soyloco would be to concentrate only on those bets that carry a stake of three points or more. In conclusion then, in Soyloco we have a tipster who has demonstrated over a good number of bets that he has an edge over the market in the Central and South American football markets. The question to ask yourself, having read this review, is whether you are in a position that allows you to properly exploit this edge. One way of garnering profits may be to utilise the in-play markets as the games kick off and the odds on the chosen team are pushed out, but if you are thinking of adopting such a strategy, please do bear in mind the time differences involved with a Page 16
number of the relevant matches kicking off in the early hours of the morning in the UK and Europe. We rate Soyloco as a Speculative Buy at this stage, but only for those whose life/betting circumstances mean that the issues of practicality can be overcome. It is a service that we feel is better suited to the more experienced bettor who is looking to diversify his football betting into different leagues, whose stakes are relatively large, and who is perhaps limited to using only the Asian bookmakers. We will continue to monitor odds availability and how the Soyloco service develops, and naturally will keep members updated. 18 MAGAZINE EXTRACT: Practical Punter - Real Life Betting Experiences Each month we also publish our 'Practical Punter' series, which features the real-life betting experiences of one member who follows a range of SBC-recommended tipsters. This punters goal is to continually earn enough from his betting to put his kids through school and enjoy the odd holiday, all the while juggling a full-time job and busy life! Below is a sample taken from an article published in July 2014 THE PRACTICAL PUNTER ONE MEMBER'S REAL LIFE BETTING EXPERIENCES FILLING YOUR BOOTS IN THE SUNSHINE! Summer weather s not been half bad, has it? Let s hope the sun continues to shine, not only for the endless barbecuing opportunities it presents, but also for you horse racing betting enthusiasts. I m sure that prolonged periods of good weather and the consistent racing conditions help the racing tipsters no end in their reading of the formbook. Certainly Wayne at Northern Monkey is enjoying these summer months and is filling his betting boots very nicely indeed. More on that very shortly. Before we get on to the theme for this month s piece, let s take a quick look at how the portfolio has performed through July. I m writing this on the morning of the 31st, so there is still one betting day to go to actual month s end and as we all know, anything can happen in even that very short time. As it stands though, July has so far produced an overall portfolio ROC of 4.03% (at an ROI of 7.19%), which I m more than happy with. July is not a month that sees the portfolio working to anywhere near the max. There is no action from The Football Analyst, Football Investor, NBA Expert or The Value Bettor. When all services are active, the target is to hit a monthly ROC of 4.25%, so 4.03% in a month like this has to be regarded positively. By far and away the highest performing service has been Northern Monkey which has hit a very rich vein of form indeed. A shade under 31pts profit at an ROI of 39.09% and an ROC of 38.6% is outstanding, and follows on from a June that offered up an ROC of 19.51%. Happy days! The other really notable performance - but this time negatively - has come from the Blogabet tennis tipster who unfortunately dropped 25.78pts in July, which equates to a negative ROC of 12.89%. This is the service s first losing month, although it has suffered a similar sized drawdown in the past, and it will be interesting to see the reaction we get. I m optimistic that it will be a strong one. Overall though, it s pleasing to see the portfolio produce a decent level of consistency over the last few months. 3.75% ROC for July, 3.1% in June, 2.38% in May, and 4.9% in April. Nothing outstanding, and a little below target for a four month period, but like I say, this is hardly the busiest time of the betting year. It s been a strong month too for Club GOWI (ROC 20.67%) and a pretty decent one for Insider Betting (ROC 14.07%), and it is these two services that seem to provoke most debate and comment on blogs, primarily addressing the issues of getting decent odds on the selections and how quickly the prices crash. Page 18
It is with this in mind that I want to address this month, the issue of securing acceptable odds on our bets, and I ll go through my own personal strategy. I m not saying that the way I do it is necessarily the right approach, but it does work for me. Hopefully, by going through it with you, I will at least give you food for thought in terms of how you approach your own betting. I ll say too, that the principles we re about to discuss are relevant to following any service that causes the prices on selections to drop quickly. NOWADAYS PEOPLE KNOW THE PRICES OF EVERYTHING AND THE VALUE OF NOTHING. Who d have thought that Oscar Wilde was into sports betting? Despite the fact that deep down I knew that placing a bet at 1.7 that had been advised at 2.0 was a fool s game, I couldn t bear to face the prospect of letting a potential winner go unbacked. So in I d wade, regardless of the price, sticking down my cash with no proper thought. It really did take me longer than it should have done to realise that my approach was all wrong, and that I needed to pay more heed to obtaining value in my bets. It wasn t until I started to read and hear things from people who were obviously more experienced and successful at betting than I was, that I accepted that securing value really is the be all and end all. I finally came to realise (and it really was a case of being better late than never!) that without this skill, the long term outcome for my portfolio was not so rosy, no matter how skilled the tipsters within it were at finding winners. Of course what is an almost impossible task, at least if not using a statistical/mathematical modeling approach to betting, is identifying just how much value exists, if any, in a particular pick. You need to remember this as you read on. It s impossible for a tipster like Keith at GOWI to say there is X amount of value in one of his picks. He can make a very good judgement as to whether a bet has value or not, and indeed go further and use his skill to identify when a bet has more value than another (which is reflected in his weight of staking), but whether a pick is at odds 5% better than they should be, or 10% or 20%, how precise can you be? A skilled estimate is the best any tipster can do. So what we must assume therefore, is that our tipster has identified a solid level of value in each and every selection they advise, and that after the point of bet release, it is down to ourselves to secure as big a chunk of that value as possible. THE HARDEST THING TO DO IS SOMETIMES THE MOST SIMPLE. The best piece of betting advice I ve ever been given is that you don t ever have to bet. No-one forces us to strike any bet, although I do understand that we can feel compelled to do so. I would imagine that the following scenario is familiar to most, if not all of you You re in the midst of a losing spell. Last minute goals are turning winning bets into losing ones, your horses are always a nose behind in the photo finishes. You re feeling more and more frustrated and it s getting harder to take as you see the balances in your bookmaker accounts falling lower and lower. It is in this context that you get your from your tipster who is obviously very confident about a selection, but due to circumstances you re not able to get the bet on as soon as it was released. Indeed, by the time you get to your laptop or PC, the price on the selection has crashed from 1.9 to Now, deep down, you know the value must have gone from that bet, right? But reading the again, the guy is so confident. It carries a bigger stake than most of his picks. It must win. And suddenly you re telling yourself that amongst all these losers, you just need a win. Something to plug the leak, stop the rot. Does it really matter that the price is only 80% of the Page 19
price the tipster thought represented value? After all, a winner is a winner. And how are you going to feel if after backing all these losers, you walk away from a winning bet? Been there? I know I have. Many times. And it was only relatively recently that I grew the cojones to do the simplest thing in the world walk away and not bet. If the price has gone too low, then as the yoof of today say, leave it, yeah? DETERMINING AN ACCEPTABLE PRICE. OK, so we re determined to be disciplined enough to walk away from placing bets that we know no longer hold any value. But where do we draw the line between what is an acceptable price to take on a pick, and what is not? This is a very inexact science and I m sure there will be statisticians and experts on probabilities that disagree with what I m about to say. What I would say to them is that successful betting involves not just playing the numbers correctly, but includes successfully managing the psychological impact of what we re doing. It is just as important to get the non-mathematical aspect of running a betting portfolio correct if we are to be successful long term. If we keep passing over bets because we re not getting what we deem to be a value price, then it won t be long before we become disillusioned. For the sake of our own sanity, we do need to ensure that we are placing the majority of the bets that come through from our tipsters. We mustn t be too pernickety, and deny ourselves the opportunities to make some money! It is on this basis that we have to make some assumptions, the biggest of which is that the tipster has identified a significant amount of value in each of his picks. So as a general rule, I am looking to take no less than 90% of the officially advised odds on any of my sports bets. That s my cut off point, my bare minimum, although I do still want my average odds taken to be much higher, more like 97/98% of the advised odds, and in fact I actually change my acceptable minimum price depending on the nature of the individual bet. As you know, the majority of my bets now are sports related, primarily football. Each bet is backed using the Asian Handicaps and is either on a +ve handicap line, i.e. 0 (Draw No Bet), +0.25, +0.5, +0.75, etc., or it s on a ve handicap line, ie , -0.5 (the equivalent to straight win), and so on. For +ve handicap bets, I draw that minimum line at 90% of advised odds. For ve lines, I up that minimum requirement to 95%, for reasons I m about to explain. GETTING ON DEFCON 1 AND DEFCON 2. Obviously the ideal scenario is to get your bets placed as soon as the tips hit your inbox and secure the odds before they drop too far. If we re being realistic though, this isn t always practical, or possible, to do. We re not robots and we have a life to lead too, which will often mean that we can t place all our bets with supersonic speed! So the first thing I do when I am in a position to place my bets is to check Oddsportal to see the best price available. If the price has dropped below the 90%/95% lines I ve set as the bare minimum to take, then I don t bet. What I will do is then check back at regular intervals to track odds movements, perhaps once each hour or so up until kick off time. Frequently, as the market matures and becomes more robust, the odds that have initially crashed start to rise back up, rebounding back above the cut off points, at which stage we can get our money down. If it gets to within half an hour before kickoff and I ve still not placed my bet, I ll try to check every five to ten minutes, because this is the time when odds can fluctuate to a greater degree as the books Page 20
are balanced as bigger wagers are made on one team or the other. I m certainly able to get most bets on pre-match, above my cut off lines, simply by waiting and watching the markets this way. On occasion though, the pre-match prices don t bounce back sufficiently, and that s when we go to DefCon 2 the in-play markets! There s nothing more satisfying than getting a good price on a selection that had previously crashed, by being patient, striking the bet in-play when the odds have drifted sufficiently, and then seeing that bet go on to win. Mind you, there s nothing more frustrating than waiting for that good price to become available only to see your team score an early goal that trashes the best laid plans, and then see that team go on to win without carrying your cash. In my experience though, the prices on the ve handicap line do start to expand quite quickly once the match starts. Certainly I manage to get my bets on much more frequently than I miss out because of an early goal. Please remember too, that if you re team happens to go behind prior to placing the bet, then it is very much worth watching the market for when prices on the match reappear. Often they will come back significantly longer than they had been prior to the goal and represent a brilliant opportunity to snap up an excellent price. Remember, as far as the Asian books are concerned, they reset the score to 0-0 after the goal, so if you re trying to back your team on the -0.5 line, your team actually only needs to equalise for you to win your bet (providing the other team don t score again, of course). This strategy doesn t work quite so well with DNB bets or +ve handicap bets as of course the more time that elapses in the game, the closer you are to such a bet winning. This is why I give myself an extra 5% leeway on my minimum acceptable odds than I do for my ve handicap bets. Remember, we don t want to be missing out on too many bets if we can help it. I also tend not to back my selection if they have gone ahead in the match themselves, unless it is a very early goal. A team that has gone ahead is quite likely to adopt a different approach if they stay ahead as the game wears on and perhaps concentrate less on scoring again, which we may need them to do to win our bet, and more on not conceding. YOU MUST LEARN TO DEAL WITH THE PSYCHOLOGY. If you decide that you are going to implement similar strategies to those I ve talked about here, then please do ready yourself mentally. There WILL be times when you miss out on backing winning bets, but remember, there will also be times you don t place a bet that turns out to be a loser. It s a certainty though that your mental aptitude will be tested at some point, and there will be times when you re left shaking your head and tearing your hair out (at the same time, if your hand/eye co-ordination is good enough!). Remember too that if using some busy football tipsters, then you will be in receipt of a high number of bets, which is a very significant factor. Ask yourself this looking at the bigger picture, is it not worth sacrificing the odd bet when A) There will be plenty more from wherever source it came from, and B) It means that with every single bet that you do place, you know that you are securing some level of value, and often a lovely big chunk of value? You may be thinking that all this involves a great deal of hard work. Well, yes. I guess it does. But are we really expecting something for nothing with our betting, or do we really want to make a decent profit and put some effort into ensuring that we give ourselves the best chance possible of doing so? And if you can t put this sort of effort in, then I think the question you need to ask yourself is whether these services are right for you? I d suggest possibly not. Page 21
MAGAZINE EXTRACT: Interview With A Winning Punter In our magazines we also regularly feature in-depth interviews and expert advice from a whole range of betting industry figures - all designed to help you make money from your own betting. With interviews with everyone from bookmaker insiders to betting fund managers, we have plenty to share with you such as in this exclusive Q and A with one winning punter - Peter Green. Below you can find a large extract from our recent interview with Peter focusing on just how he has made his betting such a success. HOW I MAKE MONEY BETTING: PETER GREEN ONE PUNTERS JOURNEY FROM FLOP TO FULL-TIME GAMBLER Welcome to the first in a series of interviews with punters, tipsters and some of the many experts we work with here at SBC on just how they make money betting. There are many ways to skin a cat and just how each individual makes their money betting is often unique to them. Thus these special interviews are designed to get under the skin of how some punters make it pay - the secrets behind their success and their advice for others trying to emulate them. To kick-start this new series we interviewed 'Peter Green', a long-term SBC member, who makes a consistent income betting each month. Peter was very happy to tackle all our questions, revealing details on the tipsters he follows alongside some brutally honest thoughts on the mistakes he made early on that any aspiring punter should be aware of. SBC: Hi Peter, thanks very much for agreeing to be the first person interviewed as part of our How I Make Money Betting series. To start off with, can you tell us how long you have been betting and a bit about your betting history. Peter: I have being betting since 2004 on and off basis. From 2009 onwards I started to take it seriously. After 3 years of an expensive apprenticeship in 2011 I started to figure out that you could make money from it! I think I might have joined the SBC in 2009, although I didn t start using the tipsters until late I had to work through my own stupidity first before I gave myself up unreservedly to the Secret Betting Club and following tipsters! Was there any reason why you started betting professionally? Is it an area you have always had an interest in or just something you fell into? I always had an interest in betting. I was one of those people who hoped rather than believed they could make a living from it. Whenever I was a beset by a losing run I would give up and not bet again for 6 months. Circumstances changed for my in 2008 with the economic crash. My work as a Structural Engineer came to an abrupt end. I got into serious betting for the first time. The first year didn't involve anything like following tipsters or having a betting bank. It was pretty disorganised. I got hooked on NBA and used to bet in running every night. It well relatively ok for the first 6 months but then took a serious nosedive. I then started looking for tipsters on the internet. Page 22
Can you tell me a bit more about your expensive apprenticeship? What did it entail? I presume you made some expensive mistakes - do you care to divulge any? Invariably I made some bad choices. I think I would be too embarrassed to mention them here as I would lose all credibility! But it seemed like I went from bad to worse. A normal person would have given up at this stage. I kept ploughing away hoping rather than believing that I would make a success of it. Was there any particular Eureka! moment that transitioned you from 'apprentice' to master so to speak? I suppose initially there was a light bulb moment rather than a Eureka one. I came across a site called Betadvisor in late 2010 and for the first time I saw league tables of tipsters in a number of different sports. It was glossy and well presented and seemed above board and transparent. For the first time I could see the importance of ROI, staking plans, etc. I joined a tennis service called Jonny Bravo and I made profits as per what the service stated. I also saw the potentials profits one could make from horse racing but I always had told myself I would never bet on a sport that I wasn t particularly interested in. That s why I stayed away from horse racing for so long. In January 2011 I delved into the Hall of Fame part of the Secret Betting Club. I joined the cheaper services such as Northern Monkey and PJA Racing to get started with. I also distinctly remember sending a to 'The Judge' every day so I could join his On The Nose service. My persistence paid off as I got in. I then started making proper money for the first time via this portfolio. That, if anything was the eureka moment. I had been in the desert of ignorance for two years and I hoped rather than believed I could make money from betting. The reality was that in the beginning, I was no better than the poor sucker in the bookie shop. Now I had the keys to the door. My next aim was to get big enough to join some of the big players. Do you have any preference to sports you bet on? It's the horses again. The betting is available daily and the ROC is much greater than other sports. I like betting on football but I have yet to achieve the same returns, although it's always fun to tune into Sky Sports News on Saturday between 4 and 5 and see the results unfurl. I have grown to really enjoy golf betting over the last year, it's fun tuning in on a Sunday evening if your man is in the final shake up. How about the racing - you say you bet mostly on that, do you enjoy watching races you have an involvement in, or is it purely a way of making money first, sport second. It is about making money first and most races I don t see because I am busy during the week. However I do enjoy watching a day's racing when I have nothing else to do. One thing I don t like is laying horses. First of all one bad lay can ruin a good days racing. Also when you are laying a horse you are not watching the race you are just looking at that horse all the way through. The ROI is also low. I like backing horses and I like the fact that one or two wins can turn a day around completely. A factor for not watching races during the week is that if you lose by a head it can be the difference between winning 1200 or losing 50. That can wreck your head for the rest of the day and affect your day job. For me having an emotional detachment is important as I can dwell on losses too much. Page 23
Would that be your number one tip for punters then? Don't watch your bets live - simply chalk up the profit and loss on a spreadsheet? I think for most days it would be a good idea not to watch the races live. You need an emotional detachment and I find if I start watching races I get very absorbed in them and it takes away from my other work. However it's very hard to resist getting involved in the big festivals. I enjoy that for the sense of occasion as well as the races. How often do you bet? i.e. Is it full-time, part-time, mornings only? I would have to say full on part time! I get on my laptop/phone between 9-12 in the morning 7 days a week. It requires my undivided attention as time is of the essence in getting the bets on. I work in media in the afternoon. I like the mix as the latter is quite social whilst the former is not. I have no problem in motivation to get up 7 days a week. I have been to the university of adversity as regards betting for years so now that I have the (semi) good times I am not going to waste the opportunity. I like that phrase - the university of adversity, I am sure many punters can empathise with it. Do you think that having been through the mixer betting wise and seen it all before, it helps you cope with the ups and downs of betting? Yes absolutely. No matter how bad a run I have now it doesn t compare in any way to the crap I went through 2009 to the end of Rudyard Kipling said if you meet with triumph and disaster and treat those two imposters the same. I tend not get too high when I have good months nor too low when I have bad ones. January 2013 was the best month I have ever had betting. That was followed by a horrendous first three weeks in February. So when I am having a bad week or month I say to myself that I am having a good year. I always look at the bigger picture. Also due to the quality of information and tipsters at my disposal I know that I am going turn a healthy profit at the end of the year. In the bad old days I didn t have that faith. So that takes away a lot of the fear and anxiety. Do you have any strategies for riding out losing runs or coping mentally with them to share with other punters? I think you just stick to your guns. Whether I am in a losing run or a winning run I am still doing the same thing. I don t try and alter my staking plan or change tipsters. For example there is a tipster called On the Nose who has fallen out of the hall of fame and has become a lot less fashionable than what he was. He had a bad start to the year and there was a huge temptation on my part to ditch him. However he has had a great March including Cheltenham where he absolutely blew it out of the park with Carrick Boy (66/1 on betfair!) and Windmere Lad (20/1). It paid off to stick with him and it worked out in the end. A big enough betting bank is important to absorb a losing run. Psychologically that is important as you know you are prepared for the worst case scenario. A losing run that goes on for a long time can be tough. It be hard to get out of bed and turn on your laptop after you have taken a few weeks of a hammering. But you have to because if you don t then you could miss the day when the turnaround starts to happen. Do you have a portfolio of tipsters you use? Page 24
Yes. I have 7 horse racing tipsters, 2 Football, 1 golf. I would love to have some other services on my list, however it just became impossible for me to place bets at 6.30pm the evening before. Do you use us at SBC to help pick out the tipsters for you or do you perform your own research? What else do you look for when choosing a tipster? Good customer services, results updated on time? I rely on SBC to pick out my tipsters. It s a volatile game so I need a reputable watchdog to let me which tipsters are the real deal and which are not. I used to seek out new tipsters from other sources. But my success was varied on that front much like my personal betting forays! Do you place other bets if not advised by tipsters...e.g. systems, your own ratings No I don t. I learnt a valuable lesson after two years of failed betting. Whatever you think do the opposite! Maybe that would be a good basis for setting up a service! I rely on people who are a lot more talented than me. I find that s good for my piece of mind. It things go wrong I can blame them. If it's my fault then I take it more personally. It's a logical thought process. After all if your washing machine broke, you wouldn't repair it yourself, you would call a plumber to fix it. Yet people seem to baulk at paying an expert for tips - even if they are better than them at it. Do you think it's a case of knowing not just your strengths, but your weaknesses when betting? That was the most valuable lesson I learnt betting. I display all the qualities that a gambler shouldn t have. I am impulsive, I get emotionally involved, I end up chasing loses, etc. Once you realise your own shortcomings then you have won half the battle. It's like surrendering to win! The quality of tipsters is improving all the time as now it is viable for them to make a full time living from it. A successful punter has to spend enough time and energy already trying to figure out where he is going to put his bets on. Moving onto your actual performance, are you happy to share some idea on your own betting returns? Lately it has proved more volatile if anything. January was my best month ever with 1420 points profit. February was bad with a loss of 320 points. Having said that it would have been a lot worse if I did not have a good last week to the month. Overall my profits have improved year on year as the quality of the tipsters I use has improved and my betting bank has got larger. Finally - what would be your advice for any punter looking to emulate you? Avoid the university of adversity! It could put an abrupt end to your betting career. Use the Secret Betting Club as your central point of reference. There is a lot shysters and crap out there so stay well away from it. Get on the cheaper tipsters in the Hall of fame first and then work your way up to the big boys. Don t be too greedy or rash in the early days. Hold your discipline and make sure your betting bank is large enough. Thanks to Peter for his time in answering our questions. Page 25
