4 Day Trading vs. Swing Trading by ChartSpeak page 4 And now we compare day and swing trading nothing is set in stone here no research done I m sure we left a lot out these are just random thoughts. Nature of the business. Swing Trading.is more of a methodical and scientific approach you are looking to play trends that last weeks or months. When your list of proven criteria is met, you enter you let the market do the work for you and you force the market to prove you wrong. You are relaxed and calm and unflustered by the market noise. You will typically spread your money between a handful of good positions perhaps entering 1 or 2 positions each week and generally giving them time to run their course. Day trading.is more game-like you are looking to play movement and don t care about the bigger picture. Each day is a game an event like a baseball game or a tennis match. It s you against everyone else like sitting down at a poker table. Every night you watch game film you work out a game plan and contingency plans you are up early you are pumped and ready to kick ass you are ready to rock n roll, but you are calm and objective. You follow your game plan but remain open to the necessity of changing your plan if the opposition is acting unexpectedly. You may make a couple trades/day or numerous, and at every close, you are back in cash. Objective Swing Trading. if you swing trade on the side of a full time job, your goal is capital appreciation. An ambitious but realistic goal would be to double your money. If you swing trade full time, then we assume you have plenty of money in the bank to live on and although you may pull profits out of your account from time to time, you don t need the cash flow. You are still looking for capital appreciation but it usually comes in chunks rather than every day. Day trading. to make money day in and day out you have a goal you make a list of things you need to do to accomplish your goal.you work out a game plan and you get to it You live day by day rather than week to week or month to month. Type of profits Swing Trading. it s not uncommon for some application of the 80/20 rule to apply to the profits of a swing trader a small percentage of your trades will account for most of your profits.the rest of your trades will cancel each other out or provide some lunch money. Day trading. in baseball terms you re a singles hitter and you must be content and satisfied with hitting singles and not swinging for the fences. You are simply looking to chip away and grab a little piece here and there. Profit potential Swing Trading. it takes money to make money. If you could double you money in one year but were starting out with only 10K, you certainly will have accomplished something, but you really haven t made much. Swing trading is scalable. If you get good at doubling a 100K, then you should be able to double 500K or more using similar strategies. Day trading. you do not need as much money to day trade because usually you are only in a couple positions at any given time and you are constantly exiting positions to free up capital. But day trading is less scalable. If you get good at day trading 100K, you may not be able to use the same techniques to day trade 500K let s face it you may be able to enter and exit 1000 shares fairly easily but that doesn t mean you can do the same with 10,000 shares. Day trading in this regard is like playing blackjack at a $500 max table your profit potential is limited by the table rules just like a day trader s profits are limited by liquidity and executions.

5 Day Trading vs. Swing Trading by ChartSpeak page 5 Risk Swing Trading.the bigger the rose, the harder the thorn. If you want to enter a position and give it time and space to move around and let the stock run its course hoping to make 10 points, a proportional amount of risk will be assigned to the trade. You cannot control the market; you cannot control what a stock does. All you can do is enter good positions that have very favorable risk/reward scenarios, use reasonable stops and lay your chips on the table. The key is knowing when to hold them and when to fold them i.e. being able to say this is a real good one and the market is in a strong trend, so I m gonna bet big or this is a so-so trade and the market is choppy, so I m gonna use a much smaller positions than I normally do. A blackjack player who counts cards will vary their bet based on the favorability of the cards a swing trader needs to do the same. Day trading. almost by definition a day trader has much less risk and it would be almost impossible to suffer a big loss. Assuming you have the ability to exit at your predetermined level, your only risk (and this will happen if you trade long enough) is the stock being halted, you lose internet access, or the power goes out where you trade from. It comes with the territory, and there is nothing you can do about it. Learn to exit when the stock does not do as expected and you should never experience a big loss. Homework / DD required Swing Trading. we call it DD or due diligence. It s an ongoing task it never ends. You are constantly looking for the next trade, and every night you need a detailed plan regarding each of your exiting positions. What if scenarios need to be well thought out. If you are looking for a free ride, forget it. There is no free lunch in the market and we make these comments assuming you know how to trade. If you are starting from scratch, then get ready to go back to college. It will take a few years of constant study to get good. Day trading. your nightly homework is simpler because you probably trade the same group of stocks over and over, so you aren t looking for new issues you just gotta work out a game plan for each day. There are no short cuts here. You are sitting down at a poker table with the best of the best. As Sun Tzu said The General will win who makes the most calculations in his temple. Stress Swing Trading.is the glass half full or half empty. Swing trading carries more risk, but it s not uncommon to go days at a time without doing anything other than monitor positions. And if you get good, it can be pretty relaxing if a strong trend exits. Day trading. One would think less risk would translate to less stress, but this isn t the case. Day trading requires you to be in the game. You must play to make money where as with swing trading, a few good positions can be held and you can relax and let the market play out. Day trading comes with the pressure to succeed day in and day out where as swing trading only requires you to find one or two good picks each week. Discipline required it s all about having a plan and then following it Swing Trading.the discipline required has two facet. You must resist trading aggressively when market conditions are not conducive. You must use stops and enter positions when trades don t work simple as that. Nobody sits down at a blackjack table expecting to win every hand. You hope to win more than you lose and you vary your bet size depending on the count. In trading you can be profitable on only 50% of your trades, but by intelligently varying your position size and exiting losers quickly, you will win in the end. Day trading.you gotta be quick on your feet and have the ability to act without hesitation and never second guess. You know your exit before you enter. You are ahead of the curve...i.e. you don t wait until the market tells you to get out you just ring the cash register and move on to the next trade.

6 Day Trading vs. Swing Trading by ChartSpeak page 6 Also regarding discipline you must not covet your neighbor s goods. If you re a day trader then be a day trader and don t get upset when you cash out a position for a $2 profit and the stock goes higher. If you re a swing trader then stick to it. Both strategies work but neither works all the time. There will be times when one group does much better than the other. Don t chase the market with different strategies. Jealousy will kill you in this business. Most great traders have a particular type of trading style/method and they do it over and over. Most great traders are specialists not generalists. And the verdict is..???...which is better? Obviously neither. Each has their good and bad points or you can look at each falling into the is the glass half full or half empty situation? It depends on your personality it depends on your capital base. Both work, but it s very hard to do both at the same time. You are much better off being a specialist rather than a generalist. Be great at one rather than pretty good at both. Personally we think a beginner needs to be more active take small losses and learn the game. Once capital is built up and he gets better at recognizing the difference between good and bad trades, moving more towards swing trading is the path to follow because it s hard to day trade a large sum of money.
