7 CASE STUDY Road Mappig I cojuctio with a major redevelopmet aroud Earls Court i West Lodo, ElectroDetectio was commissioed to carry out udergroud services surveys at each of the major road juctios aroud the complex. The roads cocered were some of most cogested i the area ad icluded North Ed Road ad Warwick Road. I order to carry out these surveys a comprehesive traffic maagemet pla was devised ad extesive approvals were sought from the Highways Departmet, Trasport for Lodo, Bus operatig compaies, ad other relevat orgaisatios. I order to keep traffic maagemet requiremets ad cogestio to a miimum, ElectroDetectio adopted the iovative approach of usig a multichael radar array towed behid a vehicle. Usig the specialist vehicle meat the fieldwork could be carried out over four ights rather tha the origial estimate of four weeks, ad approval from the Local Authority was obtaied withi miutes. The reduced timeframe o site appealed to the Local Authority which was aturally cocered about the disruptio to residets, particularly at ight. The quality ad quatity of the survey data collected proved to be more tha satisfactory ad some ukow structural data was also obtaied alogside the service routes. 9 CASE STUDY Iverted Scaig The mahole chambers were surveyed usig a iovative solutio whereby the Leica D laser scaer was lowered ito each chamber usig a iverted tripod. Data was collected at several levels icludig at the surface, that whe stitched together, created a 3D sca cloud of the whole chamber. As part of large topographical ad udergroud services survey at Three Bridges Rail Depot i Sussex, the route of a large diameter, deep level Thames Water sewer was idetified. The pipe depth meat that it was ot possible to accurately survey the route without cofied space access ad this was ot permitted. The 3D data captured eabled the accurate plottig of each mahole chamber ad associated pipes without havig to access the chamber. The scas eve maaged to help determie the directio of the pipes eterig ad leavig the chambers. No cofied space etry ecessary Rapid data collectio reduces site time 3D chamber ad localised pipe model created CASE STUDY Wall Scaig I 2012, Lodo Udergroud (LU) commissioed ElectroDetectio to udertake radar scas of the walls ad floors of St Mary Abchurch, a Christopher Wre desiged church i the City of Lodo. The huge redevelopmet of Bak Statio beeath the streets of Lodo posed a serious risk to the historic buildigs above ad LU eeded to establish whether the structure of the Church could withstad excavatios plaed below. The origial pla was to carry out core-samplig through the walls, but this was rejected by the Diocese. As a result, ElectroDetectio developed a alterative methodology. Usig the IDS DUO groud peetratig radar uit, ElectroDetectio scaed the floors of the Church to locate both kow ad previously ukow crypts. The walls were the scaed usig the had-held MALA CX Imagig System. 3D scas were udertake ad a series of closed-cetred grid scas were take i two directios o a pre-set grid. The data from these scas was the merged, thus obtaiig a cloud of data. The software the allowed the user to pa through the various levels ad view elevatio data through the wall. The delivered 3D data eabled Lodo Udergroud s egieers to uderstad how the walls of the church were costructed. The survey data allowed the team to idetify weak poits ad formulate a methodology to moitor ad protect the church durig the excavatio ad costructio phases. The umber of core samples required to be drilled was reduced sigificatly ad potetial damage was limited. I this case, pipes caot be electroically traced as the sigal from the trasmittig probe caot peetrate through metallic objects. Aother limitatio to iteral draiage surveys is that ispectio covers are ofte desiged to fit i with the surroudig floor.
