2 MADISON COUNTY EXTENSION CLOVER CONNECTION APRIL 2015 Kathleen Boldman Cynde Keating County Youth Office Assistant Youth and Families Coordinator Educator I Challenge You... To Lead WHAT S INSIDE: Horse Project p 2 Scholarships p 3 Taste of Camp p 4 Livestock p 5-6 Dog Project p 6 A 4-H Youth Conference p Calendar p 8 Livestock Dates p 8 As a 4-H er, time and time again you will hear about leadership. But what does it mean to be a leader? Yes, of course it can include roles like club president or team captain. How can everyone be a leader if there is only one club president? Of course! Being a leader isn t about titles. Being a leader is about behaviors and actions. Strong youth leaders exhibit the following traits: (The Young Leaders Academy of Baton Rouge, 1. Bearing - The way you carry yourself. 2. Courage - To act in the face of fear. 3. Decisiveness - The ability to make up one's mind. 4. Enthusiasm - To be excited. 5. Initiative - The ability to set into action. 6. Integrity - To have sound moral character. 7. Judgment - To make the right decision. 8. Knowledge - To possess a full understanding. 9. Loyalty - To be faithful. 10. Perseverance - To never give up. 11. Responsibility - To be in charge of your actions. 12. Unselfishness - To think of other's first. Take a moment this month to consider the way your peers view you. Make the necessary changes to be a young leader. And remember People will summarize your life in one sentence. Pick it now. -John Maxwell, from Leadership Gold: Lessons I ve Learned from a Lifetime of Leadership N JOHN WAYNE DR, WINTERSET, IA MON-FRI, 8AM-12:30PM & 1PM-4:30PM LEARN MORE AT Iowa State University Extension programs are available to all without regard to race, color, national origin, religion, sex, age, or disability.

8 Youth 4-H OPPORTUNITIES Dare to Discover June 30-July 2, 2015 Iowa 4-H Youth Conference 2015 Every June, over 1000 teenagers converge on the campus of Iowa State University for 3 days full of speakers, workshops, mixers, dances, a banquet, and community service activities. If you've completed 8th grade, you're eligible to attend. You don't even have to be in 4-H to attend this conference! You will get to experience campus life, and meet new people from across the state! You will be having fun while learning by doing, dancing the nights away, and serving the community. You will get to learn new things to take back to your community and school, and in the process you might even discover something new about yourself! There are opportunities for you to share your talents with the rest of the delegation through small group discussion, the Conference Chorus, and a Talent Show! If you'd like to be part of the team to capture the Conference in photos, join our Iowa 4-H Youth Camera Corps by signing up for workshops T-40, W-40, and R-40 and bring your camera. We're doing things a little differently this year and you'll get to learn photo skills and put them to work through the workshop series. Please join us in June for the most incredible three days of your life at the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference! Visit to register or for more information! Family & volunteer news & Updates H'ers for 4-H Campaign The 30 th annual 4-H ers for 4-H Campaign begins March 1. The campaign, conducted by members of the State 4-H Council, coincides with the 2015 Iowa 4-H Youth Conference theme, Dare to Discover. The goal is to raise $30,000 by asking every 4-H club to consider a donation of $3.00 per member. Why support this campaign? Approximately one-third of the funds support the State 4-H Council program, which in turn provides the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference experience for 8-12 th grade 4-H ers. Almost half of the funds are distributed back to 4-H members in the counties in the form of scholarships for out -of-county 4-H experiences and financial assistance to help cover program development fee costs. 4-H club leaders will soon receive campaign information via or U.S. mail from the State 4-H Council. This information also can be found online: Clubs can send contributions directly to the Iowa 4-H Foundation. The State 4-H Council appreciates everyone s commitment to help make the best better for all Iowa 4-H ers. Nominations Needed for 2015 Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame Iowa State 4-H and the Iowa 4-H Foundation are sponsoring a 4-H Hall of Fame to recognize the volunteers and staff who have given so much of their time and talents to the Iowa 4-H program. The selected individuals - or couples - should be those who have made a significant contribution to the 4-H program or were pioneers of 4-H. The Iowa 4-H Foundation will host an induction ceremony for the 2015 Hall of Fame honorees at the 4-H Exhibit Building during the 2015 Iowa State Fair. If the honoree is deceased, a family member may represent that person at the induction ceremony. Nomination forms are available contact Jennie to get one. Please submit nominations to the Extension Office by May 1. Contact for more information
