Youth will be constructing 2x2x10 raised garden beds. Local contractors will be working with youth and showing them tips and tricks they would ve liked to known when they started. 2 COUNTY AND STATE FAIR CHANGES *ALL DATES ROLL FORWARD 2015 TO H Poster Communication Exhibit County & State Added 4-H Grows theme to reflect the 4-H national marketing theme. Replace 4-H Conference theme 2016 is Diving to New Depths. We will continue with the Nothing Compares for state fair and keep 4-H is along with Join 4-H. The poster communication special rules (previously listed under the communication event rules) are now also included with the exhibit building rules. Beef County Added a Live Production Market Animal Class. This class is for those animals that are going to Tyson to have their carcasses evaluated at the fair. There will be a Live Champion announced at the fair and a follow up meeting September 20th to announce the Carcass Champion. Horse County Eliminated the Intermediate Division in all classes except in Showmanship. Junior Division is youth 4th 7th grade and Senior Division is 8th 12th grade. Added a Flag Race Class. Deleted the Pleasure Driving, English Pleasure, and Hunt Seat Equitation classes. Poultry County Added a Poultry Poster Class. The Poultry Poster can be on topic about poultry and must follow the STATIC exhibit rules of a poster or tri-fold. Fair Entry County We will be using an online database for all STATIC, Livestock, Communication, Clothing Events. Please note that you will HAVE to sign up your STATIC, Clothing Event, and Communication Exhibits by Friday, July 10th online in Fair Entry. NO walk-ins on STATIC day will be accepted! Poultry Exhibitors! We are happy to announce that at this point and time we are planning on holding a poultry show! 3 4-H ers for 4-H Campaign The State 4-H Council is once again sponsoring the 4-H ers for 4-H Campaign. State Council is asking for a minimum of $3.00 per member again this year. Clubs can mail payment directly to the Iowa 4-H Foundation or drop it off at the Extension Office. Information can be found at or at the Extension Office. Why support this campaign? About one-third of the funds support the State 4-H Council program, which in turn provides the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference experience to 8-12th grade 4-H ers. Almost half of the funds are distributed back to the 4-H members in the counties in the form of scholarships for out of-county 4-H experiences and financial assistance to help cover program development fees. Fairboard Update The Fairboard is happy to announce that the Guthrie County Fair Foundation is officially the 501(c)3 status from the IRS and are officially a non-profit! If you know of someone that is wanting to donate to the Poultry Barn fund, please share this news with them as their donation is now tax deductible. If you know of any grants or funding that is available for the Barn Fund, please get in touch with Jolene Sheeder. Also, check out their new website STATE 4-H CAMPS OFFERED AT THE IOWA 4-H CENTER STEM Survival Camp -- June 5th 3pm to 9th 5pm (5th-7th Grade) 1991 PEACH AVE. MADRID, IA Would you know what to do if a zombie apocalypse were to actually happen? What about a natural disaster of epic proportions? We have just the place to learn the skills you may need. A remote camp where you can practice archery, rock climbing, orienteering, shelter making, fire making, outdoor cooking, and water purification. By the end of the week, you can be sure no matter what situation the world may throw at you, you will come out on top. Is your child destined for big things? Teach them how to handle life s challenges by immersing them in a safe, yet challenging environment. Using today s popular movies and TV shows as a backdrop. Campers will be asked to use their STEM knowhow in order to survive and overcome obstacles inspired by today s popular shows (e.g. Hunger Games, Walking Dead, Divergent, Maze, etc.) Youth also will be given instruction and challenges such as ropes and obstacle courses, rock climbing, fire making, archery, conflict resolution and self-defense. Science Explorers Camp June 26th 3pm to 30th 5pm (5th-7th Grade) Do you enjoy taking things apart? Do you like to take a close look at the world around you? Explore nature and history in central Iowa. Come and find out how local plants thrive, how birds fly, why Iowa soil is black, and how people have lived on the land. By the end of the week you will have a better understanding of how the world works. Do you dive into problems head first, enjoy taking things apart, and learning about what makes the clock tick? Using nature, historical artifacts, and technology, campers will look at various parts of the world to gain a better understanding of the world is not merely a sum of its parts. PDF Design Camps--Design Dimensions and DaVinCi Design Aerospace All Design Camps include traditional outdoor activities such as hiking, wall climbing, archery, etc. plus one of these inquiry areas: Design Dimensions (9th through 12th Grade). July This immersive experience will help you get a sense of what it is like to be in college. Days will be spent at the College of Design on the Iowa State University campus, engaging in a series of college-structured courses. Students will explore the principles of 2D and 3D space as they apply to the design of interior spaces, architectural forms and product designs. You will work with drawing, rendering and modeling to communicate visual information about the built and natural environment. DaVinCi -- Design of Aerospace Vehicles for (in) Class Integration (6th through 8th Grade). June Youth are immersed in activity throughout DAVinCI through real design and simulation-forming teams to tackle challenges and collaborate on designs. Each team member gets to experience the different roles of the engineering team including team leader, communicator, designer, builder, and pilot. Designs are brought to life with 3-D laser cutting, CNC routers, and 3-D printed templates; gliders tested, and evaluated to identify opportunities for future Improvement. 5 Guthrie County Extension Summer Day Camps This summer we are offering 4 different hands-on, FUN day camps for all youth having completed 4th 7th grades. Cost for each camp is $20 per participant and the registration deadline is May 18th for all camps. Please read each description carefully! Registrations are on a first come first, served basis and we must have your payment and registration in hand to hold your spot. We can t wait for you to come and join us for some SUMMER FUN! Babysitting Basics: Come and learn about the responsibilities of a babysitter, what employers expect, caring for infants and young children, age appropriate toys and activities, safety and how to handle emergencies. This is offered at the Panora Public Library and is only available to those that have completed 5 th grade. Date: Friday, June 3 rd at the Panora Public Library OR Tuesday, June 14 th at Mary J. Barnett Library Time: 9:00 am 3:00 pm Lunch and snacks are provided Limit 15 participants Leadership Academy: The name says it all! Come and join us for a day full of games! You will also be involved in leadership and teambuilding exercises that are FUN! Hope to see you there! This camp is geared to those that love the outdoors. This program will be at the Springbrook Education Center. 7 Dog Obedience Classes Who: Open to all youth and adults. Dogs must be at least five months old. Youth are not required to be in 4-H. Training is required for 4-H/FFA youth intending to exhibit in the Dog Show at the Guthrie County Fair. What: Topics Include Commands, heal, sit, stand for examination, etc. When: Classes meet weekly for 10 weeks. They begin June 7, no dogs, at 7 p.m. at the Extension Office. The remainder of the classes will be at the Guthrie County Fairgrounds with dogs. The last class will be on August 9 if there are no cancellations. Cost: $15 per dog for youth $30 per dog for adults (Make check payable to Pat Wyatt) Classes will be taught by Pat Wyatt, who has many years of experience judging and training dogs.
