1 ARTHUR L. BURNETT, MD, MBA, FACS Dr. Arthur (Bud) Burnett received his A.B. degree in Biology from Princeton University and M.D. and M.B.A. degrees from Johns Hopkins University. He performed postgraduate training in general surgery, urology, and reconstructive urology and urodynamics at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. He then received an American Urological Association (AUA) Foundation Scholarship/Postdoctoral basic science research fellowship in neuroscience and concurrently joined the faculty at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. At present, he holds the position of Patrick C. Walsh Distinguished Professor of Urology. Current service positions in the Department of Urology include Director of the Basic Science Laboratory in Neuro-urology, Director of the Male Consultation Clinic and Sexual Medicine Division, and Director of the Advanced Specialty Training Program in Sexual Medicine and Reconstructive Urology. He is an alumnus member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Burnett has served in multiple professional capacities with medical organizations and advisory committees. He has made academic contributions consistent with his biomedical research and clinical activities in sexual medicine, major pelvic reconstruction, and genito-urinary oncology. He has written more than 250 original peer-review articles, 50 editorial comments, 45 book chapters, and 2 books.
2 BIREE ANDEMARIAM, MD Dr. Andemariam received her undergraduate degree from Princeton University and medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine where she graduated with research honors. She completed her internship, residency and fellowship training at New York Presbyterian Hospital Weill Medical College of Cornell University in New York City. She has received several research honors including an Amgen Research Fellowship Award for her work in treating refractory and relapsed lymphoma, a Clinical Research Feasibility Fund Award for her research in hemophilia, and a Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award. She was also a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Research Scholar. She is currently pursuing a master s in clinical investigation at Weill Cornell Medical College
3 JANICE RAMBOW BEATTY, Janice Rambow Beatty, BSN- sickle cell/thalassemia nurse specialist at the Ann and Robert H Lurie Children s Hospital of Chicago. I ve been at Lurie Children s (formerly Children s Memorial Hospital) for 22 years working with our sickle cell patients and their families in all aspects of sickle cell disease. Prior to that, I was the sickle cell nurse specialist at the Medical University of South Carolina. I ve been a member of the International Association of Sickle Cell Nurses and Physician Assistants (IASCNAPA) for many years and have had the privilege of being the Chairman of the Board of Directors. I m actively involved in sickle cell research, teaching patients and staff, speaking about sickle cell disease and doing fun things like sickle cell camp. I ve had the honor of working and networking with sickle cell colleagues across the world.
4 JULIE KANTER, MD Dr. Julie Kanter is currently the director of sickle cell disease research at the Medical University of South Carolina. Since arriving at MUSC 7 months ago, Dr. Kanter has worked to open several clinical trials in sickle cell disease in order to provide novel options to affected patients to improve outcomes. She is also collaborating with several physicians on a proposal to improve the treatment of chronic pain in sickle cell disease as well as to identify new point-of-care tests to improve early diagnosis for low-resource areas. Prior to coming to MUSC, Dr. Kanter spent four years as the Director of the Sickle Cell Center of Southern Louisiana at Tulane University. While at Tulane, Dr. Kanter initiated a comprehensive lifespan program for patients with SCD and increased research efforts in sickle cell disease in treatment, point of care testing, and neurocognitive evaluation. Dr. Kanter previously completed her fellowship training in pediatric hematology-oncology at Washington University in St. Louis and her residency training in pediatrics at the University of Colorado.
5 KATHRYN HASSELL, MD Dr. Hassell is a hematologist/ oncologist, and is the Director of the Colorado Sickle Cell Treatment and Research Center at the University of Colorado. Dr. Hassell provides inpatient and outpatient care to adults with sickle cell disease at the University of Colorado Hospital. She is a site principal investigator for multicenter clinical trials for adults with sickle cell disease, and has provided national leadership on study steering and executive committees. Dr. Hassell is the Project Director for the Mountain States Genetics Regional Collaborative, and serves on the Newborn Screening Advisory Committee for the Colorado State Department of Health. She also sits on the steering committees of a number of national projects including serving on the NHLBI Sickle Cell Guidelines Panel, co-chair of the Sickle Cell Research and Scientific Panel for the PhenX project, the American Society of Hematology s Public Health Taskforce, and Newborn Screening Translational Research Network. Dr. Hassell also completed a four-year, part-time, IPA assignment with the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and is the President of the Sickle Cell Adult Provider Network. She is currently on the medical advisory committee for the Foundation for Women and Girls with Blood Disorders.
6 KIM SMITH-WHITLEY, MD Kim Smith-Whitley, MD joined The Children s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) in 1992, as a Pediatric Hematology/ Oncology Fellow. Dr. Smith- Whitley started her faculty appointment with CHOP in 1996, with board certifications in both Pediatrics and Hematology/ Oncology. In 2004 she was promoted to Clinical Director for the Division of Hematology at CHOP and became Director of Comprehensive Sickle Cell Disease Center and Medical Director of Medical Ward 5E at CHOP. Today the CHOP Sickle Cell Clinical Program is one of the largest in the United States and provide comprehensive care and services to more than 700 patients at the Main Hospital and approximately 200 patients at Pediatric & Adolescent Specialty Care, Voorhees, Pediatric & Adolescent Specialty Care Center in King of Prussia, PA and other off-campus locations. Dr. Smith- Whitley attended George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, DC and completed her residency at the Children s National Medical Center in Washington, DC. Her special interests are sickle cell disease, bone marrow failure and general hematology. She has received countless awards and honors as well as served on numerous boards and committees including the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America, Inc. as past Vice Chair of MARAC (Medical and Research Advisory Committee).
7 SAMUEL RODGERS-MELNICK, MT-BC Samuel Rodgers-Melnick, MT-BC has worked as a music therapist for UH Seidman Cancer Center since June During his internship, Sam developed a weekly music therapy drumming group for inpatients with sickle cell disease, their family members, and nursing staff known as the Seidman Sessions. Sam has expanded music therapy services for patients with sickle cell disease at UH Seidman Cancer Center into the Acute Care Clinic and Bridge Clinic for young adults with sickle cell disease. Sam also designed and constructed mobile recording studios and various electronic music interventions for working with patients in the Acute Care Clinic. Sam currently serves as principal investigator for two music therapy studies investigating the effects of music therapy on adult patients with sickle cell disease.
8 VELVET BROWN-WATTS MSW-ADM Velvet L. Brown-Watts, Founder/Chairperson of Supporters of Families with Sickle Cell Disease, Inc. Supporters (as it is affectionately known) is the only comprehensive grassroots community based 501[c]3 non-profit organization in the state of Oklahoma, serving individuals, families, and communities impacted by Sickle Cell/ Thalassemia Disease and Trait. Fast becoming an inspirational voice in the sickle cell community, Velvet Brown-Watts is a pioneering social worker and community activist. She is the wife of minister, Jeremiah Sr. and mother of four children of whom Jeremiah Jr. is impacted by sickle cell disease. Velvet fuses profound cultural sensitivity and team-work, with a heart of compassion. She is passionate about leadership; speaking out for social justice, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, integrity, and competence within the disability communities. Velvet believes empowering people who are vulnerable is the best way to help one become successful in life. Raised, in the inner city of Chicago with a theology of service to others; Velvet received the Social Justice Award from Oklahoma University Women Gender Studies for her work with sickle cell disease and women, in That same year she was name Graduate student of the year by the Oklahoma Chapter of National Association of Social Workers for her advocacy and awareness work with Sickle Cell Disease in the state of Oklahoma. Velvet has spent over 20 years in social services, serving on different non-profit community boards, and volunteering with many different organizations in the Oklahoma community. Velvet has conducted several workshops for varies agencies throughout Oklahoma on impact of SCD/SCT. Velvet is a member of the National Association of Social Workers, a member of Phi Alpha Honor Society and a member of Oklahoma Sickle Cell Disease Association of America Patient Advocacy Committee. Velvet holds an AA in Liberal Arts from Tulsa Community College, a Bachelor s Degree in Social Work from Northeastern University and Master of Social Work in Administration from University of Oklahoma. Velvet is case management certified for the states Advantage Program. She works as a Mentor Coordinator with women, and as a Medical Social Worker with hospice and home health patients. Through her leadership, Supporters of Families with Sickle Cell Disease, recently worked with the State of Oklahoma Medicaid Agency and was award a contract with the Oklahoma Health Care Authority to conduct consultation and services for those impacted by SCT/ SCD. Velvet is passionate about serving in the Oklahoma community and empowering others. Her motto is Learn the Facts, Know the Truth, Save a Life- Sickle Cell Disease Awareness.
9 WANDA WHITTEN-SHURNEY, MD Dr. Wanda Whitten-Shurney is a pediatric hematologist-oncologist in Detroit, Michigan and is affiliated with Children s Hospital of Michigan. She has been in practice for more than 30 years. Her interest in sickle cell disease is genetic. She inherited it from her father, Dr. Charles F. Whitten who founded the clinic in 1973 and co-founded the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America, Inc. She is native to Detroit where she was educated in the public school system. After graduating, with honors, from the University of Michigan in1979, she attended Medical School at Howard University graduating Alpha Omega Alpha in She did her pediatric residency at Children s Hospital of Michigan and spent a year in their Hematology Oncology Fellowship. Her community involvement includes serving on the Board of Directors for the American Red Cross of Southeastern Michigan where she was a driving force in establishing there Sickle Cell Donor Program. In 2002 she received a national award from the Red Cross for her work on the African American Leadership Conference, a committee for outreach and education of community leaders and groups about sickle cell disease and the need for blood donations. She has a particular interest in patient education and providing coping strategies for families.
10 YVONNE M. CARROLL, RN, JD Yvonne M. Carroll, RN, JD is the Director of Patient Services in the Department of Hematology at St. Jude Children s Research Hospital. Yvonne graduated with a Bachelors of Nursing Degree from the University of Tennessee and a Law degree from the University of Cincinnati. Yvonne served in the United States Navy as a Staff Judge Advocate. She joined SJCRH in 1999 in the Department of Hematology and served in several positions before becoming the Director of Patient Services. Yvonne is active in Hematology and the sickle cell disease community and serves on the Governor s Genetic Advisory Committee for the State of TN and as Vice President of the International Association of Sickle Cell Nurses and Physician Assistants (IASCNAPA). Throughout the years, Yvonne has been a Principal Investigator and Program Manager on numerous sickle cell related grants and has spoken locally, regionally, and nationally on sickle cell disease and trait. Yvonne has developed partnerships with numerous community organizations and rural healthcare workers to improve awareness and treatment for people with sickle cell disease.
