3 Apprenticeships and Sponsored Degree Courses Explained Aim of this session is to give you a broad overview of the Apprenticeship system. This will include:- Government Policy and Future Developments Types of Apprenticeship Role of the Training Provider Levels Application Process

4 Apprenticeships Types:- 1) National Apprenticeship Service (NAS) Framework-mixture of large national, medium and small businesses Apprenticeship-Service.aspx 2) Traditional In-house company development. A solution for large national and multi-national organisations (See College Intranet), but also some smaller firms will adopt this approach. 3) Sponsorship onto a degree

5 Apprenticeships There are a record number of apprentices- 450,000 people started in England in 2011/12 There are over 250 types of Apprenticeships to choose from Apprenticeships are available in 1500 different job roles Apprenticeships are available across 80 different industries No University Fees

7 Drivers for change and the development of the Legal Higher Apprenticeship Firms increasingly need good technicians with strong business and customer service skills, not solicitors. Paralegal numbers increasing rapidly. There is an argument that HE is not producing what firms want: Law/Legal Practice Course (LPC) graduates are looking for training contracts (the 2 year contract before qualification as a solicitor) but many firms have reduced trainee places or stopped them completely. In there were 5,441 training contracts on offer. In 2009/10 there were 11,370 full-time and 3,140 part-time LPC places. This oversupply has been going on for years. The LPC costs 13K, after the cost of a law degree. This debt burden raises salary expectations which are higher than the market can sustain. Academic training is too wide, not enough business and relationship management. The system has created a mismatch between graduate expectations and market reality. In 2013 there was a further 25% decline in the number of vacancies for graduate entry

11 Apprenticeship Vacancies Civil Service Vacancy Description The new Civil Service Apprenticeship Scheme is giving 100 talented people the opportunity to become the organisation s future leaders. So if you want to work at the heart of Government with a minimum starting salary of 18,763 in a role where you can really make a difference, this fast track programme could open up senior opportunities and lead to an exciting and varied career. The roles Roles are on offer across a variety of departments including Cabinet Office, Ministry of Justice and HM Revenue and Customs, Department for Education, Department for Work and Pensions, Crown Prosecution Service and Department for Business Innovation and Skills. With real responsibility from day one, you could be an Assistant Private Secretary to a Minister responsible for a specific area of their portfolio; you could be providing advice and guidance to job seekers; or you could be helping to develop a new policy by engaging with stakeholders, interested groups and other government departments. The challenge Not only are the roles demanding but also, as part of the scheme, you ll work towards a Level 4 Higher Apprenticeship in Business and Professional Administration. This requires you to study and submit written assignments to show that you understand high-level administrative processes and gather on-the-job evidence to demonstrate your competency. What s more, you ll join as a management grade which means that in addition to your role you could manage a colleague or a team.
