Professional accreditation and recognition Many of our degree courses are accredited or approved by professional organisations. This independent endorsement reflects the work-focused nature of our courses and the practical skills that are integrated into your studies. For example, BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance provides the maximum number of exemptions for ACCA and ICAEW and eight exemptions for CIMA. This ensures that if you sit your professional accounting exams with one of these organisations, you will have fewer papers to complete and can qualify in a much shorter time period. Working with UK and international employers We design and deliver bespoke training and management development programmes for employers. Companies trust and work with us because of our flexible approach and ability to adapt to their needs. For example, we have set up a tax academy with HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) that enables their staff to achieve bespoke qualifications in taxation. Dave Hartnett, the former Permanent Secretary for Tax, said, The tax academy will ensure that professional standards are raised in HMRC, with our people benefiting from faster and better access to the skills and knowledge they need. International perspective Economics, trade and finance operate outside geographical boundaries. As an international business school, we ensure that your studies develop your perspective so that you become aware of how issues and policy decisions can affect the UK, Europe and the rest of the world. Selected degree courses also provide you with the opportunity to spend a year working abroad so you can experience the financial and business cultures of other countries, or to spend time studying at one of our 27 partner institutions in Europe, Australia, China or the USA. Achieving global standards We are committed to achieving the international standards for Business Schools set by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and have been accepted into membership by AACSB. Once accepted as a full member, AACSB accreditation will support our reputation for global recognition and will underpin how at MMU we approach the student experience, research, innovation and international activity. Responsible management and environmental sustainability Social responsibility, environmental sustainability and an appreciation of business ethics are qualities we look to develop and instil in all our students and graduates. We work with you to develop your capabilities so you can become a generator of sustainable value for business and society at large. We incorporate into our academic activities and curricula the values of global social responsibility and give you the opportunity to interact with managers of business corporations. This enables you to fully understand the challenges of meeting social and environmental responsibilities. Hub for business The Business School is more than an excellent teaching centre. It also has a role as a source of advice and help for businesses of all sizes. For example, the Centre for Enterprise has worked with 1,000 business people, improving their leadership, innovation and entrepreneur skills to support the drive for growth in the region. 3

Accounting, Finance and Economics Connecting you with employers Throughout your studies there are opportunities to build your profile in your chosen profession by gaining work experience, completing work-related assignments and developing your network of contacts. Meeting graduate employers Each term there is a packed schedule of employer visits to campus. Organised by the University s Careers and Employability Service, these presentations enable you to meet employers from different sectors who are actively recruiting graduates. This is your opportunity to find out more about the company, the vacancies they have available, and their application process. Mentor Match The Mentor Match scheme puts you in touch with a recent graduate or an experienced manager who is working in your chosen sector. They provide you with insider knowledge about their sector and share tips and advice to help you progress with your career. Guest lectures Each year we invite professionals to deliver guest lectures where they share their industry knowledge and insight with you. There is usually time before or after the lecture where you can talk to them as part of a small group or one-to-one. Volunteering The Business School has a dedicated Xchange website where you can search for voluntary work experience that enables you to work for a business, organisation or sports club and develop your skills in accounting and finance or apply your skills and knowledge to broader business management tasks. 6

Aldi, Bentley, Co-op, Tesco and Debenhams are just some of the employers that came on to campus last year to talk to students about graduate schemes and career opportunities. Part-time work Working part-time or during the holidays is a great way to get experience of working in different sectors and developing transferable skills that are highly valued by employers. The University s Careers and Employability Service has an interactive jobs board where you can find details of current part-time, graduate and voluntary vacancies. Jobs4Students is the University s own student temping agency and advertises paid opportunities to work on campus for the University. Each year we organise events where you can meet employers from the accounting and finance sector who are actively recruiting graduates. Placement year A placement year can be an excellent opportunity to acquire high quality work experience and structured on the-job training whilst earning a salary. There are also opportunities for you to undertake a placementbased project where you research a business issue for your employer. This project can count towards one of your final year units and reduces your workload in your final year. The placement must be a minimum of 36 weeks but it will usually last for 12 months and takes place after your second year of study. We have an award-winning placement team, who advertise vacancies and can help you find a placement. The team has over 25 years experience of matching students to employers. They advertise over 1,000 vacancies each year, organise an annual placement fair where you can meet employers who are actively recruiting placement students, deliver CV workshops, provide one-to-one advice, and will conduct a mock interview with you so you can practice your interview technique. The placement jobs market is competitive and it is your responsibility to be pro-active and apply for vacancies. We recommend that you start researching companies and opportunities during your first year and apply for positions at the start of your second year. Finding the right opportunity and the right position is important because if you are a good match to your placement, your employer could offer you a full-time position when you have graduated. 7

Accounting, Finance and Economics BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance Accredited by the UK s leading professional bodies for accounting this degree enables you to acquire the skills and knowledge for a career in accounting, or to apply your financial aptitude to broader business management roles. I was a finance intern and was part of the fast-paced Finance team, who are responsible for all financial processes and reports. The department consists of accounts payable, accounts receivable, credit risk and credit control sections that each have their own goals and targets set to deliver the best possible financial results for GM&T Retail. I was based in the accounts payable section, which was a team of 6, including myself. By being part of a small team, I got to know my colleagues very well and we worked very efficiently and effectively. My tasks included liaising with customers and energy brokers, checking that gas/electricity energy consumption was correct on purchase invoices, allocating supplier payments and inputting invoices onto SAGE 200 and SAP. I received extensive training on using SAP. When I first started I never expected that I would be given as much responsibility within my department as I have been. This shows the trust and confidence the team has in everyone s ability to do their job efficiently. 9

Accounting, Finance and Economics Visit us We hold open days in June and October each year. Coming to an open day gives you a feel for the University and you can find out about our courses and attend subject and general talks. You can speak to tutors and current students about courses and ask any questions you may have. You can also join a campus tour to see the halls of residence and campus facilities. Details of forthcoming events can be found at If you are offered a place on one of our degrees, you will be invited to attend an applicant visit day in the Spring. The visit day enables you to find out more about the Business School, see our study facilities and meet tutors and current students. How to apply Full-time students If you are planning to study full-time you should apply through UCAS. Please submit your application online at Please contact UCAS applicant helpline on if you have any queries or problems using the online application system.
