1 Friday 5th June 2015 Issue #35 What an afternoon for William McManus and Sam Parker, who went as BBC School Report student reporters to Wembley on Saturday to cover the FA Cup Final. Click here to listen to them being interviewed by Nick Godwin from BBC London Sam and William did very well on Wembley Way on Saturday. It's not easy working in those conditions and interacting with the public. The Aston Villa fan who interrupted the interview could have thrown them, but they kept level heads and pressed on very professionally! I hope they enjoyed the rest of their day. He asked us about what the fans who we had interviewed thought about the match and what the atmosphere was like around the stadium. Click here to see the full report. Having the experience to work with the BBC reporters was a dream come true. Meeting people you hear on the radio and working with was a moment I will never forget. 2 ...continued from page #1 SCIENCE WINNERS Marlborough win First Prize of The Salters Challenge On 20th May Katherine Fairs, Akos Molnar, Ruby Ciric and Stephen Kelly from Year 7 were picked from their year based on their outstanding effort and achievement in chemistry to represent their school at the Salters' Festival of Chemistry held at The University of Bedfordshire Park Square. Marlborough students competed against 7 other schools from Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire. After a welcome talk by Dr Ahmed and Professor Sreenivasaprasad the students were escorted down to the labs to complete The Salters' Challenge. It comprised of a forensic science scene where the students were given chemicals taken from suspects. They were then to analyse the chemicals to identify the criminal. The challenge was kept top secret so the teachers got whisked off for a talk by the Royal Society of Chemistry together with a guest speaker Dr Farnaud on his latest research. After lunch the students were then off again for the university challenge followed by the Chemical Magic Demonstration which to Miss Fellows horror and to Miss Curtis' delight involved snakes and large spiders. Along with an awesome demonstration of luminous chemical reactions. The day ended with a grand finale of prize giving to the students... Marlborough won 1st Prize of The Salters Challenge. The students were delighted with their achievement. 'It was very interesting to try doing practical experiments involving various chemicals as we don't usually get to do that in class.' - Ruby Ciric 'I enjoyed the opportunity to try lots of different practicals, involving lots of interesting chemical reactions. I loved it!' Katherine Fairs 'We won the Salters challenge which was the most enjoyable. It included using forensics to find the killer. When we won Miss Fellows went crazy. 3 ...continued from page #2 Year 8 Visit to Paris Year 8 went to Paris for 5 days during the May half term accompanied by Mr Henshall, Ms Kinnear, Miss Rickhuss, Ms Pounnas, Ms Eastwood, Mr Jenkinson and Mr Pressland. We visited Vimy Ridge - a Canadian War Memorial which was a very moving and poignant experience for staff and students alike. We also spent a day visiting many of Paris' most famous sights which included: climbing the Eiffel Tower; taking a boat trip along the Seine; visiting the Sacré Coeur and Montmartre and climbing the Arc de Triomphe to take in the views over the city. The group also visited Parc Asterix and Disneyland Paris for two fun-filled days, culminating in a spectacular light and fireworks display. All of the staff and students who went had a wonderful time, taking in many new and exciting experiences, never to be forgotten. 'The whole trip was great fun. The sightseeing day was amazing and I also developed my French speaking skills.' Evan Robinson 8AP 'Quite simply the Paris trip was an amazing experience, allowing us to practice our French and giving us the chance to socialise with many students we may not have previously known. It has helped us have a greater understanding of the French culture and we had a fantastic time.' Ruth Mitchell-Fox 8SW 'The Paris trip was a really exciting packed trip. Doing a variety of activities made the trip fun and many memories were made. Being with friends made the experience so much better and also teaches you a lot of skills. We got lots of freedom which helps you to be independent. Paris was amazing, anyone who gets the opportunity should go.' Elodie Allan 8AP 'Paris was a once in a lifetime experience. On June 14 th I am doing the Windsor Olympic distance triathlon. That s a 1500 metre swim in the Thames (keeping my mouth shut!), a 42K bike ride and a 10K run. I m aiming to complete it in less than 4 hours. I am raising funds for a local charity called Youth Talk. In the St Albans area, Youth Talk provides free one to one counselling for young people aged Many of the young people who seek help from Youth Talk suffer from depression, anxiety and low self-esteem. 5 ...continued from page #4 New Resource for Parents: Sexting and Online Sexual Exploitation There is a new guide from the Lucy Faithful Foundation, the foundation is the only UK-wide charity focused solely on reducing the risk of children being sexually abused and exploited and as part of their work they offer support for parents whose children have been affected by these issues. The new guide is aimed at supporting parents whose children have already got into trouble online helping them to understand what has happened, why and how parents can talk to their children and get further support. E-safety Poster Winners Marlborough recently held a competition for students to design an e-safety poster that could be used around the school to keep young people safe on social media sites. Congratulations to Caroline Tack (10SB) who won first prize of a Kindle and 2nd place Devon O Toole (7HA), 3 rd place Morgan Mitchell (9PA) and highly commended Aaron Brooks (9CS) who all won vouchers. Morgan said that she was unaware that Mr Salih entered her media poster for this competition so this was a real surprise. Devon said she was very pleased that she came 2nd.
