It is your responsibility to investigate all of the available courses in your chosen field. If available, gather the information from a minimum of three schools and indicate which one you have chosen. These questions will help you make the best choice when researching a training provider. Yes Program/Certificate Information Program Name: Practical Nursing NOC 3233 This is a two-year Ontario College Diploma Program. This course is offered full time. This is a highly competitive program; the number of qualified applicants exceeds the number of seats available. Post-secondary education may be required for successful admission to this program. Practical Nursing is a five level (63 week) program leading to an Ontario College Diploma in Practical Nursing. The Practical Nursing programs at Fanshawe College have received a CATEGORY 1 PROGRAM APPROVAL from the College of Nurses of Ontario. Practical Nursing May 2015 Page 1 of 13
2 The program emphasizes the dynamic role of the Practical Nurse in the health care community and will prepare you for a career in which you will function as an important member of the health care team. Clinical practice is integrated throughout the program providing experience in long term care, acute care, and community settings. The program provides the knowledge, skill, and experience to work with individuals, families, groups and communities in a variety of settings. Graduates qualify to write the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Examination and if successful, become eligible for registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Practical Nurse (RPN). 4 Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) test with a score of 70 in writing, reading and speaking and a score of 80 in listening, with test results within the last two years An English Language Evaluation (ELE) at Fanshawe College with a minimum score of 75% in all sections of the test, with test results within the last two years. Eligibility to write the test requires level five ESL completion with a minimum of 80% Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) test with a minimum score of 90 with at least a 4 on the oral interview Recommended Academic Preparation Grade 12 Mathematics (C) or (U) in addition to Grade 11 Functions and Applications (M) or Grade 11 Functions (U) Grade 12 Business and Technological Communication (O) Recommended Personal Preparation Students should be personally responsible and emotionally mature with an interest in, and motivation toward, nursing, and should possess those personal characteristics which would enable them to co-operate with others in the delivery of health care. Please review the CNO Requisite Skills and Abilities document for more information Applicant Selection Criteria Where the number of eligible applicants exceeds the available spaces in the program, the Applicant Selection Criteria will be: Note: 1. Preference for Permanent Residents of Ontario 2. Receipt of Application by February 1st (After this date, Fanshawe College will consider applicants on a first-come, first-served basis until the program is full) 3. Achievement in the Admission Requirements Admission to the Fanshawe College Pre-Health Science program does not guarantee admission in a subsequent year to the Practical Nursing program. Successful completion of the Fanshawe College Pre-Health Science program, however, does enable the student to be given additional consideration when Practical Nursing May 2015 Page 4 of 13
5 applying to the Practical Nursing program. The Pre-Health Scienceprogram is the preferred designated preparatory program for admission to the Practical Nursing program. *Students who are currently registered in the Pre-Health Science program at Fanshawe College or at any Ontario College of Applied Arts and Technology must successfully complete their Pre-Health Science Ontario College Certificate with a minimum 3.0 GPA by April 30, 2015 and meet the academic pre-requisite courses and grades for the Practical Nursing program in order to be eligible for admission consideration in the immediately following academic year to the Practical Nursing program. **Students who are currently registered in the General Arts and Science program at Fanshawe College or at any Ontario College of Applied Arts and Technology must successfully complete their General Arts and Science Ontario College Certificate with a minimum 3.0 GPA by April 30, 2015 and meet the academic pre-requisite courses and grades for the Practical Nursing program in order to be eligible for admission consideration in the immediately following academic year to the Practical Nursing program. Post-Admission Requirements The following items are applicable to the program and are time sensitive. Please refer to for important information about preparing for placement by the due date. Possession of a Standard First Aid course certificate (either St. John Ambulance or Canadian Red Cross or equivalent) and a Basic Rescuer course certificate - Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers (HCP) in accordance with the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada Canadian Guidelines for CPR Evidence of Good Health (including immunizations) Police Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Screening, including a check of the Pardoned Sexual Offenders Database Placement Agreement Other Information Due to the academic and clinical rigor required in the Practical Nursing program, applicants applying directly to this program from secondary school, without additional post-secondary education, are encouraged to consider applying to the Pre-Health Science program. The Pre-Health Science program is an excellent preparatory program for those considering a career as a health care professional. Practical Nursing May 2015 Page 5 of 13
6 Eligibility for registration in Ontario in any regulated health discipline requires the candidate to provide information regarding any criminal offence or physical/mental condition which may affect practice. The Practical Nursing program is offered at the London and Woodstock campus using the same curriculum model. Once enrolled in the program, transfers between campuses are not permitted. Before undertaking a nursing program, applicants should be aware that the practice of nursing is governed by the legislation: Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 and other acts that govern the practice of health care. The profession is regulated by the College of Nurses of Ontario. The successful completion of an acceptable program of nursing is the first requirement for becoming a nurse in Ontario It is recommended that applicants become familiar with other requirements for becoming a nurse in Ontario, as set out by the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO). Due to a variety of clinical venues and possible changes in legislation, the requirements are subject to change. 8 Challenge Exams are used for admissions purposes: o When an applicant has completed the learning, but does not have proof of a grade (i.e., English, Math, Chemistry, Biology, and Physics). The challenge exam shows that the individual has the skill set that meets the minimum grade requirement. o When an applicant has completed the learning, but does not meet the minimum grade requirement. Delivery methods vary from course to course and term to term. The goal is to provide a variety of approaches to learning. 2. What certification will you get upon completion of this course? Two-Year Ontario College Diploma. Upon completion of this program you will be eligible to register with the College of Nurses of Ontario to write the provincial registration exam. 3. Please explain how your progress will be monitored and reported (method and frequency). Evaluations are from instructors including, but not limited to tests, assignments, and quizzes and practical application. 4. How many hours of home study are expected per week? Approx. 2-3/hour of class. 5. Are detailed course descriptions available to prospective students? If YES, obtain copies and include with Training Research Guide. Yes. 6. What resources are available if you require additional help while in training? Fanshawe College offers a wide range of student services to support your success at college: English and Math tutoring Peer Tutors to assist students having difficulty in a specific course Study skills workshops and tutoring offered throughout the year for learners who need to brush up on academic skills Personal, academic and career counselling is available to all students Specialized support services for mature students Practical Nursing May 2015 Page 10 of 13
11 A full range of services and academic accommodations to support the success of students with disabilities Help with job finding strategies, résumé and cover letter assistance, and job interview skills. A job bank lists full-time and part-time opportunities In addition, the following services are available to all students: A full-service Library/Resource Centre, including a Virtual Library for easy 24/7 access and media loans Financial Aid Office, including bursary assistance Awards and Scholarships 7. What percent of students who are enrolled in the course successfully complete it? Varied as students from other college programs apply for and receive advanced standing to all levels of the program. 8. What academic counseling is available prior to starting school and during the training period? Staff offers pre-admission planning and academic advice and information for those considering admission to Fanshawe College. Fanshawe College has a Student Success Advisor in every school and campus who is dedicated to helping students achieve academic success. Student Success Advisors can discuss program progression as well as helping students connect with tutoring, study skills workshops and other academic supports. In addition, due to their close ties with faculty they are notified about students experiencing academic challenges early in the program. 9. How does the school accommodate the needs of adult learners? The College has considerable experience with adult learners and has specialists available to assist learners with study skills, success strategies, learning and other disabilities.
