Program Highlights Pharmacy technicians work very closely with pharmacists to achieve optimal drug therapy outcomes for patients. The pharmacy technician's role requires them to focus on the technical aspect of the prescription, perform med reconciliation by collecting the best possible medication history from patients, perform product preparation and distribution functions as well as inventory control. As a registered pharmacy technician, graduates will participate in health promotion activities and provide education such as medical device training or coordination of health clinic days. Pharmacy technicians work in collaboration with the pharmacy team and other health professionals to ensure continuity of care. As of December 2010, pharmacy technicians are able to register with the Ontario College of Pharmacists and eligible to use the RPhT (Registered Pharmacy Technician) designation. Fleming College s Pharmacy Technician program has been awarded the status of Full Accreditation by the Canadian Council for Accreditation of Pharmacy Programs for a five year term, January 1 st 2015 to December 31 st, Graduates of programs accredited by CCAP, are well-prepared and eligible to write the national pharmacy technician qualifying examination. 3 Career Opportunities When you complete your Pharmacy Technician diploma program, you'll be ready to take a position in a variety of companies or institutions, such as: retail pharmacies long-term care facilities hospital pharmacies specialized pharmacies third-party insurance companies computer software development companies government Minimum Admission Requirements OSSD with the majority of credits at the College (C) and Open (O) level, including: Grade 12 English (C) Grade 12 Mathematics (C) Grade 11 or Grade 12 Chemistry (C) Grade 11 or Grade 12 Biology (C)

4 When (C) is the minimum course level for admission, (U) or (U/C) courses are also accepted. A pharmacy technician s ability to communicate is critical in the delivery of safe and effective patient care. For this reason, applicants whose first language is not English must meet the specific English Language Proficiency scores for the Pharmacy Technician program. Applicants must possess one of the following: International English Language Testing System (IELTS) - Overall Band 6.5 Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-Based Test (TOEFL ibt) - 91 Michigan English Language Arts Battery (MELAB) Specific band scores and/or element scores also apply. Health and Non Academic Requirements Immunization Requirements: Your program has mandatory immunization requirements that include a "preentry" deadline date for submission. Non Academic Requirements: Your program has mandatory requirements which may include a criminal reference check, first aid, CPR-C, etc. For more information, please see the Non Academic Requirements page. Field Placement Requirements Placement is an integral component of the Pharmacy Technician program. In order to provide high quality placements for each student, travel outside the Peterborough area will be required. Placements are scheduled as two, four- week blocks to facilitate accommodation arrangements. You will have clinical experiences, in hospitals and community/long Term Care settings in semester three and four of the program. Failure to provide any of the required Non Academic Field Requirements by the specified due date will result in an inability to participate in the mandatory placement components of the Pharmacy Technician Program. Mature Students If you are 19 years of age or older before classes start, and you do not possess an OSSD, you can write the Canadian Adult Achievement Test to assess your eligibility for admission. Additional testing or academic upgrading may be necessary to meet specific course requirements for this program. All applicants will be required to achieve credit in all mandatory sciences through Secondary School or through Academic Upgrading programs.
