2 Artist in Residence Program Application Guidelines Program Summary The Palm Beach Photographic Centre (PBPC or the Centre) offers artist/photographers the opportunity to live and pursue their work in Palm Beach County, FL for a minimum of three months. During the residency period, selected artists will be free to explore their personal vision while teaching and engaging both students and the community-at-large at the world acclaimed photography center. The residency period culminates with a Community Gallery exhibition, a project, or special event created by the artist-in-residence in collaboration with PBPC participants. The residency program is offered to fine art photographers in three experience levels: Professional Artist, Emerging Artist, and MFA candidate. Selected artists will be awarded through a review process. Recipients will receive an honorarium, housing, transportation, a dedicated studio at the Centre, and use of PBPC equipment. (See details below). Based on background and experience, artists applying in the Professional category may also be awarded an exhibition in the Museum at Palm Beach Photographic Centre during the residency period. Palm Beach Photographic Centre The Palm Beach Photographic Centre is a registered 501(c)(3), nonprofit arts organization. Its mission is the enrichment of life through the photographic arts. For more than a quarter century, PBPC has served as a treasured community arts center, as well as a hub for the international photography world. The Museum at Palm Beach Photographic Centre exhibits the work of photography greats in the field of fine art, documentary and photojournalism. Recent exhibitions have featured the work of Man Ray, Ralph Gibson, selected works from the Henry M. Buhl In Good Hands Collection, and Wynn Bullock among many other renowned photographers. The School at Palm Beach Photographic Centre provides a wide array of courses from 90-minute classes through to multiple-day workshops taught by photographers whose work appear in internationally lauded magazines and museums. FOTOfusion, the Centre s annual festival is one of the nation s most eagerly anticipated photographic arts events. Some of the most noted photographers in the world and industry giants lead hundreds of workshops, lectures, demonstrations, photo shoots, field trips and portfolio reviews for the many participating photography students, collectors and enthusiasts who attend each January. Past presenters at FOTOfusion include worldwide photography
3 greats such as Ruth Bernhardt, Bill Eppridge, David Hume Kennerly, Arnold Newman, Gordon Parks, and Sebastiao Salgado. Program Funding The Artist in Residency program is generously funded by a member of PBPC s Board of Directors and sponsoring contributors. Program Goals The goals of PBPC s Artist in Residence program are to: (1) attract outstanding photographic talent from around the globe; (2) provide a professional working environment in which to pursue the resident s art; and (3) raise community discourse and further community participation in and understanding of the photographic arts. The program provides selected artists with the opportunity to reflect, research, produce, teach, and present at its facilities in South Florida. Working within one of the world s leading photographic centers, selected artists will be able to further his/her work, garner reputable teaching experience, and engage the community in the experimental and intellectual exploration of photography as a fine art form. For more information about PBPC, please visit: Program Guidelines To be considered for a residency program, artists must: o Make a proposal outlining the details of their residency program including a culminating project such as an exhibition, project or special event in collaboration with PBPC identified participants. (Proposal Scope of Work) o Agree to work at least 16 hours each week during the residency period at the Palm Beach Photographic Centre teaching classes or workshops, giving seminars and lectures, and preparing the culminating project with PBPC participants o Agree to work an additional 8 hours (at minimum) each week at the Centre during the residency period on the artist s own work in a studio setting open to public viewing. o Be in residence for a period of three to nine months. o Agree to sign a formal Agreement specifying the Artist inresidence scope of work based on the application proposal, terms and conditions that shall be executed by the Artist and the Palm Beach Photographic Centre. Teaching honorariums will be paid to the Artist in progressive, predetermined amounts and is based on the experience level of the artist and course curricula. Artist Eligibility To be considered, perspective artists must be at least 18 years old at the time of application and demonstrate the following criteria for each level:
4 Professional Artist: A record of accomplishment demonstrated through continuous public presentation and a recognized body of work. Prior experience as an Artist-in-Residence or a recipient of cultural grants or fellowships is a plus. Emerging Artist: Peer acceptance as an artist of outstanding promise. Prior experience as an Artist-in-Residence or a recipient of cultural grants or fellowships is a plus. MFA Candidate: Registered at a University and undertaking a thesis. Please note: PBPC is the recipient of an excellent collection of research, monographs and other books relating to the photographic arts. In the 2014/15 cycle of awards, PBPC is also open to review proposals, which guide the formation of the Research Library at Palm Beach Photographic Centre to meet American Affiliation of Museums standards. Artist Responsibility o Spend a minimum of 16 hours each week leading workshops, master classes, lectures, demonstrations and other participatory activities including developing and implementing the culminating project with participants identified by PBPC o In addition to the above hours, spend an addition 8 hours a week pursuing artist s own work at the Centre where students and the public may engage in dialogue o Complete the program pursuant to the Residency Proposal as described in the formal Agreement o Pay all expenses associated with travel to and from Palm Beach County, along with any expense not listed in the formal Agreement. o Provide PBPC one signed works of art for its permanent collection pursuant to the Residency Proposal and as described in the formal Agreement PBPC Responsibilities o Provide a rent-free studio apartment in Palm Beach, FL including water and electric, transportation expense, and limited dining at area restaurants that sponsor the PBPC Artist in Resident program. o Provide studio space at the Centre including use of a dedicated computer downloaded with PhotoShop, Lightroom, and other popular software programs. o Provide use of PBPC Epson printers capable of printing up to 60 inches wide pursuant to the Residency Proposal as described in the formal Agreement
5 o Provide use of PBPCs professional photography studio pursuant to the Residency Proposal as described in the formal Agreement o Provide a teaching honorarium each month based upon core curricula (workshops, classes, lectures, etc), the culminating program, and the experience level of the artist pursuant to the Residency Proposal as described in the formal Agreement. o Pay up to $ per month in expenses associated with the culminating program pursuant to the Residency Proposal and as described in the terms of the formal Agreement. o Recruit students and other participants for the workshops, classes, lectures, presentations, and culminating project. o Provide oversight, marketing services, studio facilities, classroom or other space along with agreed upon supplies and equipment for the Artist in Residence workshops, classes, lectures, and presentations, along with the culminating program pursuant to the Residency Proposal and as described in the formal Agreement. Application Enrollment and Deadline The period of application to apply each year is the two month period between March and April. Selection will be made and contract award by the end of June. Earliest date residencies can begin is September 1st each year. Residency time period may be made to begin as much as two years in advance. The Centre reserves the right to establish other application and selection periods. Application Evaluation and Artist Selection Applications will be previewed for eligibility and completeness by PBPC staff. Artists will be selected by a Selection Committee based on the following criteria: (1) The experience of the artist: Based upon credentials, reputation and achievements of the artist as demonstrated through the resume, letters of recommendation, support material, list of achievements, artistic statement and application presentation. (2) The artistic merit of the proposed culminating project: Based on Artist s style and approach, artistic merit of proposed Residency program and culminating project as demonstrated through Residency description, support materials, letters of recommendation and work samples. (3) Project feasibility: Based on the perceived ability of artist to: (a) effectively conduct classes, workshops, etc.; (b) effectively develop
6 and implement culminating project, (c) budget of the culminating project, and (d) complete project on time and within budget as demonstrated through proposal, experience of artist and length of residency. (4) Projected impact of the Residency: Based on the projected effect on participants and community as demonstrated through the Residency proposal. Consideration is given to community accessibility and participation, qualitative and measurable interaction and the long-term benefits to participants, the community-at-large and PBPC. PBPC is not obligated to award a residency program if, in the judgment of PBPC, the proposals presented do not meet the goals and objectives of the Artist in Residence Program. After artist selection, PBPC reserves the right to modify responsibilities, terms and conditions based upon mutual written agreement with the artist. All photographic work, seminars, lectures, exhibitions, etc. shall be conducted exclusively under the auspices of PBPC during the residency period. Selected artists must sign a formal Agreement with PBPC prior to the onset of the Artist in Residence program. Application Directions o Applicants must complete the attached application form and provide one original and three copies of each item of the Application Checklist, below. o Application material must be typewritten on 8 ½ x 11 white paper with 1- inch margins. Each page must bear the applicant s name at the top. o Applications must be delivered to PBPC by 5 PM April 30 th of each year (the last day of the open enrollment period) and no earlier than March 1st o Application materials must be sent to: Palm Beach Photographic Centre 415 Clematis Street West Palm Beach, FL Attn: Fatima NeJame, CEO Application Checklist Submit one original plus three copies of each of the following 10 items (Collate the items into a total of four packets with one marked, Original. Do not send material that is not specifically requested on this checklist. 1) Exhibit A: Primary Information 2) Exhibit B: Certification 3) Residency proposal details: Using the following outline, detail the Residency program including the course curricula i.e.: workshops, classes, field trips, lectures, demonstrations etc. and the culminating project created in collaboration with the PBPC participants i.e.: community
7 exhibition, project, special event, etc. based on 16 hours per week during the residency period (limit to three typewritten pages): o Full program description; identify activities to be conducted, including workshops, classes, demonstrations, lectures, etc. o Describe culminating project to be developed, how the project will be developed and implemented; and include a list of anticipated project needs and accompanying budget of expenses. o Describe the anticipated impacts on participants, the community and PBPC 4) Resume (no more than two typewritten pages) 5) If applying as a Professional or Emerging Artist please provide three examples of Support Material from the following: catalogs, brochures, magazine or newspaper articles, reviews 6) If applying as the MFA Candidate please provide proof of registration at a University in a MFA program, along with thesis outline. 7) Artistic statement (no more than 1-typewritten page) 8) Summary of the three most important artistic achievements (no more than 1-typewritten page). 9) Portfolio of current work no more than three years old and relevant to the proposed Residency program. Please provide images of ten works of art in CD format along with a typewritten page, numbered 1-10 with title, date of work, and medium. 10) Provide three letters of recommendation.
