2 0.1 BACKGROUND The Management Development Centre (MDC), which is situated at the Malawi Polytechnic, is a semi-autonomous arm of the University of Malawi. The Centre is established under the Faculty of Commerce and is run by three departments namely; Business Administration, Management Studies and Accountancy. The Centre has been active by engaging itself in several management activities. Established in 1978, MDC has extensively trained managers and officers working in both the private and public sector of the Malawi economy. Over the years, the Centre has geared itself towards offering different programs that contemporary managers require to become and remain competent in this dynamic world. The generic programmes which run for six months offered by the Centre include: Certificate, Diploma and Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing by Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) UK Certificate, Higher Diploma and Postgraduate Diploma in Business Management by Association of Business Executives (ABE) UK Certificate, Diploma 1 &2 and Advanced Diploma in Human Resource Management by ABE Certificate, Diploma 1 &2 and Advanced Diploma in Travel, Tourism and Hospitality Management by ABE Certificate, Diploma 1 &2 and Advanced Diploma in Business Information Systems by ABE Certificate A & B, Diploma and Advanced Diploma in Banking by Institute of Bankers in Malawi (OIBM) Certificate, Advanced Certificate, Foundation Diploma, Advanced Diploma and Graduate Diploma by Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS) UK Certificate, Diploma A & B and Advanced Diploma by Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) Malawi MDC is a training centre for managers so that in addition to running the generic courses mentioned above, the Centre also runs short courses in management both open to the public and in-house depending on the client s choice. Table 1 outlines the different short courses offered by the centre

6 2.0 CAPABILITY STATEMENT As a unit, MDC is well equipped in terms of the human resource base in management training, consultancy and business research. The Centre draws its consultants, trainers and facilitators from the pool of well qualified and experienced staff in the Faculty of Commerce and the other Faculties at the Polytechnic. Our consultants and facilitators are well trained with a minimum of Masters Degree and additional professional qualifications like CIM, ACCA and CIMA. The whole of our faculty also possesses a lot of industrial work experience; hence are able to approach issues practically.
