1 NMSU Resident Internet All NMSU residences have free Internet connections available for student residents. There are two types of Internet in campus residences: Digital Subscriber Line (DSL), and direct Ethernet. Please look at the chart below and refer to the set up instructions for the Internet connection in use at your residence. Wireless Internet There is wireless Internet available in some residences which residents can use. Network interruptions can happen when using wireless Internet. ICT recommends that you do not use a wireless connection if you are using the Internet for something which should not be interrupted, such as taking a test on learn.nmsu.edu. Wireless Internet... page 2 page 4 page 5 page 7 page 9 All Users will need a Network Card for their Personal Computer *Most computers have a built in network card, giving your computer Ethernet capabilities; however, you may need to buy a network card for some models. The NMSU Department of Housing and Residential Life does NOT supply filter/splitters for landline telephone use. If you want to use a filter/splitter, please refer to the following website: Purchasing DSL/Wireless Routers You may choose to purchase a DSL/wireless router for your residence. ICT has tested three routers for use on the NMSU network. For instructions, go to Connection Locations The connection spot varies from residence to residence. If you are a FAMILY living in Vista Del Monte or Cervantes Village, the active connection spot is in the living room. If you are a STUDENT living in Vista Del Monte or Cervantes Village, the active connection spots are in the bedrooms. If you are in Cole Village, the active connection spot is upstairs. If you are in Tom Fort or Sutherland Village, the active connection spot is in the hallway. *If you have any questions about the type of Internet connection in your residence, please contact the ICT Customer Service and Help Desk in room 141 of the Computer Center, call (575) , or us at [email protected] 1

2 Direct Ethernet Materials: *You will need to supply your own if you are using a direct Ethernet connection; you can purchase one at the Campus Bookstore. The type of Internet connection available to you will be a direct Ethernet connection. 1. First, find the Ethernet port in your residence. This port will look similar to the phone jack, but will be colored orange. In some residences, there will be a single wall mount with two Ethernet ports, one for each student. In other residences, there will be two or more wall mounts with a single Ethernet port near the desk in your room. *Note: There is also an Ethernet port in the living room in Chamisa Village 2. When you have found the Ethernet port, plug one end of your into the Ethernet port. Now plug the other end of the into your computer s Ethernet port. The first time you bring up the Internet with your direct Ethernet connection, you will see the NMSU Network Registration page ( Follow the registration instructions to connect to the NMSU Network and use the NMSU campus Internet. 2

3 Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) COMTREND Materials: AC Electric Power Adapter CONTREND DSL box The NMSU Department of Housing and Residential Life will supply these items. If you have a problem with these supplies, call (575) or [email protected]. 1. First, find the phone jack on your wall. Plug your phone wire into the phone jack. 2. Take the free end of the phone wire you plugged into the phone jack and plug it into your DSL box where it says LINE. 3. Now connect your AC Electric Power Adapter to the DSL box in the port labeled Power. The other end will plug into a wall socket. Turn the power switch from Off to On. before continuing, make sure that the POWER LED on the front of the DSL box is solid green and that the ADSL LED is solid green. This could take up to a minute. 4 4. Find the port on your DSL box labeled LAN.This is the Local Area Network port. Plug your into this port. This wire is what allows you to connect to the NMSU network. 5. Now take the free end of the and plug it into your computer s Ethernet port. If you have a problem with these supplies, call (575) or [email protected]. **Telephone Service with DSL DX3113: if you are getting phone service from ICT, you will need a filter/splitter NOT provided by Housing to use your telephone. Please refer to the filter/splitter instructions at the following website: 1. First, find the phone jack on your wall. Plug your phone wire into the phone jack. 2. Take the free end of the phone wire you plugged into the phone jack and plug it into your DSL box where it says LINE. 3. Now connect your AC Electric Power Adapter to the DSL box in the port labeled DC IN. The other end will plug into a wall socket. Turn the power switch from OFF to ON. 9 Wireless Internet Materials: Wi-Fi compatible Network Card using the IEEE wireless network standard. *You will need to supply your own Network Card if you are using a wireless connection. Windows Vista and XP Users: Click on the network icon in the lower right-hand corner of the taskbar. Click Connect or disconnect. A list of networks you can connect to will appear: click on AggieAir. *Note: The network icon will have a red x when not connected to the Internet and a globe when connected. Windows 7, 8, and 10 Users: Click on the network icon in the lower right-hand corner of the taskbar. A list of networks you can connect to will appear: click on AggieAir and Connect. *Note: The network icon will have a yellow star when not connected to the Internet and white bars when connected. 9

10 Mac Users: First, click on the AirPort icon in the top right-hand corner of the desktop and Turn AirPort On. A list of networks you can connect to will appear in the menu: select AggieAir. *Note: The AirPort icon will be an empty upside-down triangle when off and a series of horizontal lines when on. Your screens may look slightly different from the images below depending on what OS version you have. The first time you bring up the Internet with your wireless connection, you will see the NMSU Network Registration page ( netreg.nmsu.edu/). Follow the registration instructions to connect to the NMSU Network and use the NMSU campus Internet. 10
