2 Task 1 Translation You have just been asked to translate the following typed situation report produced by a Locally Employed Civilian who was late coming to work. I left home at 0630 hours. I went to the bus stop to catch my normal bus to the barracks. A large group of men was standing at the bus stop. They would not let me board the bus. I was frightened so I walked to work. 5 Task 1 Military Listening (English Version) The Ministry of Defence has just announced that there has been an incident in Afghanistan. Early this morning a NATO fighter aircraft crashed in the mountains. The crash happened 40 miles south of NATO headquarters. The aircraft was on its way to provide air support to ground troops. The troops were under attack from large numbers of enemy forces. The enemy was well equipped with machine guns and mortars. The Ministry of Defence does not know why the fighter aircraft crashed. The pilot did not report any technical problems. Weather conditions were good. The Taliban has said that it hit the fighter aircraft with a missile. The Ministry of Defence does not know if this is true or not. An armoured convoy left NATO Headquarters immediately to go to the crash site. Examiner s Instructions You work in the local car hire business. A soldier from the local military base in enquiring about your services. Give an appropriate greeting and find out the following information. Then report back the transaction. You need to know: 1. Whether there is a car available for this weekend. 2. You need to know: 1. When you can get in. 2. When you will be required to leave the barracks. 3. Where you can park your vehicle. 4. Whether you can use the gym. 5.
