2 Task 1 Military Reading Read the text and answer the questions in English. The text is about an operation in Basrah city. At 0300 hours on 8 Dec 06, a large multinational force launched a major operation across Basrah city. The operation had to be carried out under cover of darkness. The aim was to arrest several men who were suspected of being involved in murders, kidnappings and other criminal activity. The troops used Warrior armoured vehicles, Challenger tanks and boats in the operation. They expected their targets to be armed and well-protected. The operation lasted several hours and many of the soldiers did not return to base until after dawn. As part of the operation soldiers raided a building in the Al Latif district. They suspected that the house owner was a bomb maker and had supported a number of attacks on coalition and Iraqi security forces. The platoon commander described the operation: When we broke into the house, we tried first of all to arrest anyone left in the building. Once the building was secure we called in the specialist teams. Their job was to check any material we found in the house. In total we found a small amount of plastic explosive, some fuses, magazines of ammunition and an address book. The soldiers then searched another house across the road. Although the house was empty, the soldiers found computer files and photographs of suspected terrorists. All terrorists arrested during the operation are currently being interviewed. British Forces are monitoring the results of the operation to see whether it has improved local security. Questions 1. What did the multinational soldiers do at 0300 hours on 8 Dec 06? 2. What was the aim of the operation? 3. & 4. What equipment did the soldiers use and why? 5. Give one reason why the soldiers searched a house in the Al Latif district. 6. 3 Task 2 Civilian Reading Read the text and answer the questions in English. The text is about a Dutch Iraqi suspect flown to the US. According to a Dutch government spokesman a Dutch citizen, born in Iraq, has been sent to the United States. He is suspected of planning attacks on American forces in Iraq. Wesam al-delaema was arrested in May 2005 in the Dutch city of Amersfoort after the US authorities passed on intelligence to Dutch police. Mr al-delaema finally lost his fight against deportation in December. Last month he was put on a plane and flown to a secret location in the US. He will become the first suspect tried in a US court for planning attacks on US forces in Iraq. However, Mr al- Delaema denies charges of planning to attack American forces. The evidence against him was a videotape he made of Iraqi insurgents preparing a bomb. However, Mr al-delaema said that he was kidnapped and forced to make the video. If he didn t, his captors threatened to kill him. His lawyers say that the US has no right to try him. They fear he could be tortured and will not get a fair trial. However, the Dutch government spokesman did not think that the US would deny Mr al- Delaema his basic rights. The US has promised that he will be tried in a civilian court, not by a military tribunal. They also said he can serve any sentence in the Netherlands. The charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison. The Dutch government spokesman said on Saturday that Mr al-delaema is now somewhere in the US but refused to say exactly where. Questions 1. What is the Iraqi-born Dutch citizen suspected of doing in Iraq? 2. How did the Dutch know to arrest this man? 3. Where was he flown to? 4. Describe part of the evidence against him. 5. What was Mr al-delaema s response to the evidence presented? 6. What are Mr al-delaema s lawyers afraid could happen in the US? 7. & 8. What two assurances have the US given? Answers 1. Plotting to attack US troops. 2. They were given intelligence by the US. 3. A secret location in the US. 4. A video tape he made of people making a bomb. 5. He was (kidnapped and) forced to make the video (if he didn t he would die). 6. He could be tortured / he might not get a fair trial (1 mark for either). 7. He will be tried in a (civilian) court/he won t be tried by military tribunal / won t be tried by the military. 8. Any sentence can be served in the Netherlands. 5 Task 1 Military Listening (English version) The passage is about events in Northern Ireland. Loyalist Michael Stone forced his way into the Northern Ireland parliament building at Stormont carrying a large bag. The bag contained 7 devices which have been defused by the Army. Northern Ireland's chief constable said they were probably dangerous devices. The devices are being assessed for their potential to cause damage, death and injury. Speaking at a press conference at police headquarters just over a mile from Stormont, he said a gun and a knife had also been recovered. The Northern Ireland Secretary today ordered an urgent report on the bomb scare. While Army bomb disposal experts worked on the suspect device, police mounted a much wider security operation throughout the Stormont grounds. A sniffer dog was brought in to check out hundreds of vehicles in the car park in case further devices had been planted. Dozens of politicians were hurriedly evacuated from the building when Michael Stone tossed a package into it. Witnesses claimed the former terrorist pushed his way through the revolving doors of Parliament Building, shouting "no surrender". Security staff immediately reacted, fought with him and eventually pushed him to the ground. Witnesses also claimed the loyalist warned that he had a device with him. 198 words Questions 1. What did a loyalist carry when he tried to storm the building? 2. What are the items being assessed for? 3. What else has been recovered? 4. & 5.What did the police do after the incident? 6. What happened to the politicians inside the building? 7. How did Michael Stone try to enter the building? 8. What did security staff do? Answers 1. A large bag with 7 devices. 194 words SLP2 Norwegian Tapescripts Page 3 of 5

158 words SLP2 Norwegian Tapescripts Page 5 of 5

You should read the following instructions to the candidate: In this task you will be the interpreter, the examiner will play the part of the native speaker, and I will represent the British military. I understand that your convoy came under attack this morning. Can you tell me where and when the attack took place? Driver: Yes, it happened about half an hour after we left the port. We were returning from collecting supplies. It must have been about 10 o'clock. What happened first? Did you come under fire or did the bomb explode? Driver: First of all the bomb exploded. I was absolutely terrified. I didn t know what was happening. They then started firing at us from both sides of the road. Did you notice anything unusual before the bomb went off? Did you see anything or hear anything? Driver: I noticed that there were no children standing at the side of the road. Normally a group of children plays in the area where the bomb exploded. You used the word normally. How often do you travel along this route? Driver: 3 or 4 times a week. I usually wave to the children and they run alongside the trucks. How often do you vary your route? Surely you do not travel the same route all the time? Driver: There is no alternative. There are different routes out of the port but there is only one road to the barracks. 14 Task 3 Situational Interpreting (Norwegian Version) Scenario: There has been an incident involving a convoy. You are asked to interpret between one of the civilian drivers and the Int Officer who wants to find out as much as possible. (179 words) University of Westminster SLP2 Norwegian Examiners Pack Page 6 of 6
