2 CCMH Halifax offers a variety of Continuing Education Courses ONLINE* allowing therapists across the country to avoid the cost of travel and accommodation, providing an affordable option for gaining credits. These courses are an excellent opportunity for therapists to revisit the science or lecture-based curriculum of their massage therapy education. CCMH Halifax is currently offering two types of lecture series : Mini-Seminar Series courses in Anatomy & Physiology (AP), Regional Anatomy (RA) and 3 new Pathology courses! Full-Seminar Series courses in AP, Neurology, RA, Pathology, and Professional Development. Mini-Seminar Series courses can be taken at any time. Full-Seminar Series courses are offered at specific dates. See the course descriptions or contact Jennifer Stuart at jenns@nscollegeofmassage.com for upcoming dates of each course. Registration forms are available from CCMH by contacting Jennifer Stuart at jenns@nscollegeofmassage.com. Once a completed form and payment is submitted to CCMH, the therapist will be sent an enrollment message with details on how to enter and complete the course. There are no prerequisites for any Continuing Education Courses open to Massage Therapists, offered by CCMH Halifax. *All CCMH Halifax Online Continuing Education Courses incorporate evaluation methods which participants must successfully complete prior to obtaining a course certificate. Evaluations are typically in the form of quizzes or tests and a final exam. Successful completion is defined by achieving a minimum grade of 70% overall. The grading scheme is outlined at the beginning of each course. 8 FULL SEMINAR SERIES ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY I Course Description: This course presents the basic concepts of organic and inorganic chemistry, along with levels of organization of the body and cellular biology. Organization and histology of epithelial tissues and connective tissues are described. Skin, cartilage, bone, muscle, nervous tissue and blood are explained. The second portion presents the physiology of the gastrointestinal system, including mechanical and chemical digestion, energy transfer and metabolism. The nutrition portion of the course includes carbohydrates, proteins and lipids, antioxidant nutrients, vitamins and minerals essential for bone growth and metabolism, and the B vitamins. 10 FULL SEMINAR SERIES REGIONAL ANATOMY REGIONAL ANATOMY I Course Description: The first section of the course covers the basic terminology required for the study of anatomy. Function, structure and formation of the skeletal system are presented. Details and functional features of individual bones are described. The student is introduced to the various types of joints in the body. Detailed anatomy of the joints is presented. The relationship between bone and muscle is discussed. Skeletal muscles of the body are considered by region; these muscles are described according to origin, insertion, action and innervations. Arthritic conditions and pathologies of the integumentary system are covered in detail including a description, etiology, morphology, and classical treatment of each disease or disorder. Specifically this course explores what it means to make a professional commitment to society, and to safeguard the wellbeing and best interests of our clients; it begins to examine the specific principles and guidelines articulated in the Code of Ethics that comprises the professional promise of the massage therapist. This is also a course in introductory communication skills focusing on the concept of self-awareness and relationship building through communication. It will begin by examining the history of medical ethics as a discipline of study. We will begin by examining the principle of respect for persons, the Hippocratic principle of do no harm, the principle of beneficence and autonomy as the foundation of ethical conduct. We will also explore the basic elements of ethical theories and the relationship between law and ethics. The second part of this course will look at the specific application of the ethical principle of respect for persons in the context of the ethical and legal requirements to obtain informed consent, ensure patient privacy and confidentiality, provide fairness and equity in the delivery of healthcare services and maintain appropriate professional boundaries. Students will also be introduced to a model for decision-making that will facilitate their efforts to work through ethical issues in the context of health care practice. Finally, this course will also serve to familiarize students with health regulation (RHPA, the Massage Therapy Act and the Health Care Consent Act), relevant to the practice of massage therapy in Ontario.
