At the end of this course students should: 1. Be able to recognize, understand, and be able to apply basic physiological terms. 2. Comprehend the applied physiological interplay between structure and function at various levels of organization (cellular, tissue, organ, system, and organism). 3. Illustrate the interrelationship of the various organ systems of the human body. 4. Be able to apply basic physiological concepts to unfamiliar systems or biological scenarios. Required Textbook AUTH STANFIELD DESC PRINC HUMAN PHYSIO PKG This package comes with a loose-leaf version of the Human Physiology textbook by Cindy L. Stanfield and an access code for MasteringA&P, a website where you ll perform both homework assignments and lab activities. This is a REQUIRED text. You will use the text extensively to help with homework assignments and labs on the MasteringA&P website. General Course Policies Lecture Attendance: Try your best to attend all lectures. Attendance will be taken periodically, but will not impact your grade in any way. If the course instructor feels that attendance is very poor, attendance could be used as a mechanism for assigning extra credit.

2 Lab Attendance and Participation: Attendance will be taken in lab. Attend the lab section for which you are enrolled, not the one most convenient for you on any given day. If you have to miss your lab for any reason, please make arrangements with your TA to attend another lab section that week. You must also fill out a lab make-up form (see lab syllabus) and have the TA of the lab section you attended instead of your own sign it and return it to your TA with your lab report. Students will receive a whole letter-grade penalty for each un-excused, un-made-up lab. Make-up Exams: Unexcused absences for exams will result in a zero on the exam (this includes sleeping through your alarm or contacting me AFTER the exam is over if you are ill). If you are ill or have an emergency that prevents you from taking the exam at the scheduled time, it is your responsibility to contact the instructor as soon as possible. Documentation of the illness or emergency will be required. Make-up exams will be given at the discretion of the instructor. Scheduling make-up exams is the responsibility of the student and should be done if at all possible before the scheduled exam time. If you have a family emergency or death, please contact the Dean of Students Office ( and they will contact your instructor so that you do not have to provide documentation of the emergency/death in order to get a make-up exam. Requirements for class attendance and make-up exams, assignments, and other work are consistent with the university policies that can be found at Accommodations: Students requesting classroom or other special accommodations must first register with the Dean of Students Office Disability Resource Center (DRC; The Dean of Students Office will provide documentation to the student who must then present the documentation to the instructor when requesting accommodation. For optimal consideration, you are encouraged to see the professor within the first three days of class. Technology: The use of cell phones (and the like) is strictly prohibited during lectures and exams. Any cell phone or other electronic device used during an exam will be considered a violation of the student honor code (i.e., cheating). Laptop computers are welcome in class as long as you are using them for class-related work. Surfing the web, checking your , making Facebook posts, or anything of that nature is prohibited. Violation of this policy will result in point deductions at the discretion of the TA and course instructor. The table above outlines the due dates/times. These are OPEN RESOURCE assignments, so feel free to work in groups and use the textbook. The textbook will be most helpful in completing these assignments. Please do NOT post homework questions and answers to the discussion boards. Additionally, I would avoid using web sites like Wikipedia as resources. The following are specific grading guidelines to keep in mind as you complete your homework assignments. You may open and close an assignment as many times as you wish until you submit or the due date arrives.

4 Once you complete and submit your quiz, you will lose access to it. This means that you are not able to review it for practice. This is because these homework assignments should not be used to STUDY for exams. You are allowed 2 attempts to get the correct answer to multiple choice questions. You are only penalized a small fraction if you miss on the first attempt. You are penalized 100% if you miss on the second attempt. You are penalized 100% if you miss a T/F question on the first attempt. You are also penalized a small fraction for opening a hint to a question (if one is available). Late submissions are not allowed. Lecture Exams: There will be four exams (80 pts each) consisting of multiple choice and true/false questions covering lecture material only. Exams will NOT be cumulative but you are expected to retain basic information from previous chapters. Calculators will not be necessary. You must bring your UF Gator 1 card and a pencil to all exams. Lab Participation and Quizzes: Every student is expected to participate in ALL mandatory 2-hr labs. Points will be removed from your lab grade if you opt to use your cell phone during lab or are just goofing around and not paying attention. A quiz will be administered in the first 15 minutes of every lab meeting (see schedule below for details). Study guides for some of the quizzes are available in SAKAI. During weeks that you only have a quiz, you may choose to stay and discuss any of the study problems on these study guides with your TA. If you do not have any questions about those problems, you do not have to stay longer than the 15 minutes for the quiz. If you are more than 15- minutes late to lab, you may NOT have a make-up quiz and this will be considered an un-excused quiz absence. You have 6 hours to complete each lab module and accompanying questions; however, these should not take longer than 2 hours. If you miss the submission deadline, you will not be allowed to complete the lab for credit. Once you open the lab, you can close it and return to complete it, but the timer will not stop...so please plan to complete the lab module and questions in one setting to avoid being timed out. Grades: All course grades will be posted in SAKAI. Any discrepancies should be pointed out to the instructor on or before the last day of class. Please take care! ~Doc. A Study Tips for Doc. A s Physiology Class: 1. Read the assigned pages from the text BEFORE you come to lecture. Do not take notes, underline, highlight, or attempt to memorize anything JUST READ and enjoy! 2. Snow-ball the lecture notes. Begin studying lecture material immediately after the first lecture. Then, after the second lecture, begin your studies with day one lecture material. Continue this all the way up to the exam. 3. Study in groups. Now, before you meet as a group, make sure each individual has put in their own study time so that as a group you are discussing problems/questions and not simply reviewing content or definitions (you can do that on your own). 4. Generate practice exam questions. This is particularly helpful within a group. If each member generates a few questions, you could easily assemble a practice exam to share. 5. Post and answer questions to the discussion board on SAKAI. Doc. A checks these to verify that student answers are correct and often times uses posts to generate exam questions. 6. Re-write questions. Taking complex questions and breaking them down to identify exactly what the question is REALLY asking for is very helpful. It is also very helpful to look at incorrect answer choices and identify what makes those choices wrong. Ask yourself, How could I make that statement correct? Success Tips for Doc. A s Physiology Class: 1. Do not fall behind. This course moves at a fast pace and you can easily get overwhelmed if you procrastinate. Prepare ahead of time for lab and lecture and you ll do yourself a favor. 2. Stay organized. Keep track of all important due dates for lecture, lab, and the online work. 3. Check SAKAI announcements/ s daily just pretend it s facebook, but for school. 4. Have a positive attitude! Approaching the course with a defeatist attitude will hinder your learning and your grade crack a smile now and then.

Use the following instructions to form an account with MasteringA&P and register for my course, which gives you access to the homework assignments.
