1 BIOL 170: Human Physiology Instructor: Jerome Garcia Lecture Time: Online + Saturdays June 13 th to August 8 th from 1PM to 3PM Lab Time: Saturdays June 13 th to August 8 th from 3PM to 5PM: Course Syllabus Course Description A study of human organ and tissue functions. This class is a survey of the fundamental principles of human physiology and will delve into molecular mechanisms within the cells to the actions of tissues, organs, organ-systems, and how the organism as a whole adapts to certain phenomenon. Laboratories emphasize inquiry and the use of instrumentation in physiological studies. Human physiology is recommended for Biology, Chemistry, and Movement and Sports Sciences majors interested in a Health Science Career. Course Goals The goal of this course is to provide undergraduate students with: The student will be expected to attain an understanding of physiological processes in the human organism at the cellular, tissue, and organismic level. a review of the basic concepts of their introductory biology and human anatomy course and reveal how those fundamental ideas play a crucial role in understanding the molecular mechanisms. the interdisciplinary nature of the natural sciences. Mathematics provides the foundation for Physics à Chemistry à Biology à Human Anatomy. the Laws of Thermodynamics and how energy is crucial to the human body s ability to allow these complex molecular mechanisms to provide a specific function. the understanding of shape/organization confers function. a basic foundation of signaling cascades. the basic hierarchy, function, and different diseases for each organ system within the human body from a molecular mechanism perspective. Student Expectations Lectures will be delivered asynchronously and are recorded by faculty to be accessible on-line by students through Google Drive at Keck Graduate Institute at their convenience. Additional course materials including readings, grades, and assignment will be made available through the Learning Management System Sakai. Students are responsible for watching video lectures during the week at their own pace. Students are required to come to KGI on Saturdays for discussion of the week s topic(s) as well as to participate in Physiology Lab. Exams and quizzes will be given electronically at the discretion of the instructor. Laboratory periods will be conducted for 4 hours on Saturday s for 8 weeks over the summer session excluding the July 4th holiday.

2 Student Learning Outcomes Each test will provide a basic foundation of physiologic functions in their respective systems. Complete understanding will then be tested by introducing new hypothesis/ideas that help understand the underlying mechanisms for different disease states. Test #1 Review of the basic concepts and inter-relatedness of the natural science disciplines Scientific method Process of FDA approval Negative and positive feedback loops The primary tissues Understand the mechanisms from a chemical perspective Enzymes activity, pre and post translational modifications Bioenergetics living in the mitochondrial century Cell communication through signaling cascades Anatomy of the ciruculatory system Cardiac output, stroke volume, cardiac rate, vascular resistance, and blood pressure Test #2 Review of the basic anatomy of the respiratory system Pulmonary ventilation Mechanism of breathing Partial pressures and how they influence gas exchange Carbon dioxide and oxygen transport Acid-Base principles in the blood Review of the basic anatomy of the urinary system Filtration/absorption process of the nephron Renal control of electrolyte and acid-base balance Basic review of the digestive system Review of all the organs and the mechanisms that allow regulation and function Regulation of metabolism and bioenergetics Review of the basic anatomy of the nervous system Mechanisms of neurotransmission Regulation and function of different neurotransmitters Organization and functions of the CNS and ANS Test #3 Review of the muscle tissue Mechanisms and regulation for all muscle tissues Review of the different senses while breaking down their individual mechanisms Review of the endocrine system Mechanisms of different hormones and the glands involved Innate and adaptive immunity and the functions of lymphocytes Review of the basic anatomy of the reproductive system The mechanisms involved in spermatogenesis, oogenisis, fertilization and pregnancy

3 Evaluation The student must demonstrate competency on 3 tests. Please submit the lab report in your designated lab time and to your assigned teaching assistant. I. Week 1: Introduction The first week will go over the expectations of informal and formal lab reports and how to set up your inquiry based laboratory experiments. Dilutions will be reviewed and sample calculations will be discussed in lab. Please try to solve the problems before class. Finally the lab will conclude by helping the students prepare their pre-lab for next week s lab. II. III. Week 2: Protein Determination The ability to monitor different substrates or products is a useful technique when studying physiological phenomenon. One typical way of doing this is using standards and comparing the samples in question to the samples to get an approximate value of the molecule/macromolecule in question. The Bradford Reagent that allows for protein determination is a great model to mimic this type of analysis. Before students are allowed to leave they must have their basic idea for the cell viability laboratory next week (inquiry based) and justify their mechanism and materials and methods. Week 3: Cell Viability* The cell viability lab will be the first inquiry based laboratory of this course. Students are expected to develop an MTT assay around the concept of a Parkinson s disease model.

6 IV. Week 4: Blood The blood lab incorporates both qualitative and quantitative analysis. Students will blood type, count, differentiate red from white blood cells, and hemoglobin content. Before students are allowed to leave they must have their basic idea for the EKG laboratory next week (inquiry based) and justify their mechanism and materials and methods. V. Week 5: EKG* The EKG lab is the second inquiry lab based on student s proposal VI. VII. Week 6: Urinalysis Urine samples will be analyzed from different individuals. Students are expected to propose any diseases/ailments, if any, based on the urine analysis. Before students are allowed to leave they must have their basic idea for the amylase laboratory next week (inquiry based) and justify their mechanism and materials and methods. Week 7: Enzyme Activity Amylase* The amylase lab is the final inquiry lab based on student s proposal Required Lab Material: 1. Human Physiology Lab Manual Summer Composition Lab Book 3. Lab Coat
