1 AAPBS Association of Asia-Pacific Business Schools
2 Welcome to the world of Asia-Pacific business education MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT To our Academic, and Executive colleagues: Globalization is a much-used-abused word in the popular press. For businesses globalization implies a complex range of issues: how we do alliances, how we get more competitive, how we gather intelligence, where we do our business, who do we market to. And so on. What is less apparent is that globalization needs a new breed of managerleaders. We normally expect business schools to produce such people, but we also know that the quality varies dramatically. Enter the AAPBS, a coalition of Asia s top 150 business organizations and business schools, from India to Australia - New Zealand to ASEAN to China and Japan. Our primary mission is to advance the quality of business education, through collaboration of sundry players in the business community. By having regular conversations, by sharing resources, the AAPBS seeks to raise the overall quality of the people we produce, by having better education. We invite you to join this coalition, to help us identify best practices and industry needs, and to drive the development of new curriculum and programs. We help in other ways: if you are seeking accreditation with AACSB or EQUIS, or knowledge from other schools, or mentorship or coaching from experienced colleagues, we can provide the pathways and networks. Do join us! We look forward to seeing you in the next AAPBS conference. Thank you. Ricardo A.Lim President, AAPBS Dean, Asian Institute of Management THE MISSION The primary purpose of the Association of Asia-Pacific Business Schools (AAPBS) is to provide leadership and representation in order to advance the quality of business and management education in the Asia-Pacific region. The Association will accomplish its mission by collaborating in research and teaching, and working in partnership to improve business school standards and quality. AAPBS and its members are striving to understand and develop a solid paradigm for an Asian management education model within a global context. CRITERIA FOR MEMBERSHIP For membership in the Association shall be granted on an institutional level from within the Asia-Pacific region, to degree institutions. New member institutes must be approved by a majority vote from the Council. The Council will focus on the following criteria:» The mission of the organization is aligned with the mission of AAPBS.» The organization demonstrates a high level of contribution to the advancement of management education.» The organization have been endorsed and recommended by an existing member (referees must be Deans).
3 benefits of membership AAPBS offers a number of benefits and opportunities to its members: Professional Development AAPBS hosts 2 Conferences each academic year (in the Fall and Spring) to connect our AAPBS members and Community together to work towards a common goal: enhancing management education in the region. In the Fall, AAPBS holds an Annual Meeting where thought leaders from around the world gather to discuss, share, and build benchmark strategies, best practices, collaborative partnerships, and meaningful friendships. In the Spring, an annual Academic Conference provides learning and development for business faculty, training and development specialists, and administrators. Research & Development in Asian Management Education The AAPBS Case Center serves as a centralized resource for members to leverage; in an effort to enhance case teaching & writing for our AAPBS constituents and member schools. Workshops and seminars are held throughout the region each year, hosted by AAPBS member schools. Extensive International Networking Opportunities AAPBS consists of more than 150 member institutions from 24 regions/ countries. The annual meeting and academic conference provide numerous networking and connectivity activities. Mentoring New deans are able to request coaching and advice from established deans within the region. Developing AAPBS member institutions have the opportunity to learn and seek advice on business education quality and efficacy from the leading institutions within the region. Access to Additional Benefits AAPBS Annual Membership Directory, Bi-monthly e-newsletter, and AAPBS research and publications. LOW ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP FEE & LOW EVENT ATTENDANCE FEE AAPBS charges only USD 1,000 per annum membership fee. Compared to other organizations, AAPBS charges minimal attendance fees for participation at our events. THE YELLOW PAGES New Initiative: The current initiative is to launch our Yellow Pages. What is the Yellow Pages? The Yellow Pages will serve as an excellent communication tool whereby resource information can be shared and exchanged easily amongst AAPBS members. The intent is to create a data base of information amongst our AAPBS membership schools and individuals highlighting their areas of expertise, professional core competencies, research interests, courses taught, and interests. Information will be shared and exchanged in an effort to promote and encourage collaboration and joint research/teaching amongst AAPBS membership. Please refer to the AAPBS website to download the Yellow Pages form to submit your page. Dean s Clinic and Roundtable The Dean s Clinic and Roundtable is session provided at our Annual Meeting. The purpose of this session is to provide an open and supportive forum whereby Deans will be able to share their concerns, ask questions, seek advice and share insights with other Deans. There are many shared issues that our Deans and University Leadership grapple and struggle with daily. This Dean s Clinic creates an opportunity to openly share in the dialogue together; to offer guidance, advice and support to our fellow AAPBS members. Common challenges of accreditation, FT ranking, performance issues, fiscal issues, and much more are shared issues that our Deans face. Our clinic is driven BY and FOR the issues raised by our AAPBS Community. Involvement, Engagement, Service AAPBS s strength is our member s involvement, engagement and shared service to the Association. Our shared and goal to enhance the quality of management education in the Asia-Pacific Region. Involvement within AAPBS committees, Council, workshops and other activities are greatly welcomed and encouraged. If you would like additional details about these or other initiatives, please contact Professor Betty J. Chung, Executive Director, AAPBS (bchung@business.kaist.ac.kr)
