1 The Art Institute Counsellor Session on Feb Contact Hilary Quick, School contact Winrob Stewart, Director of Admissions, Hillary Quick- for call room presentations, PAC presentations, talks about career opportunities, skills and personality traits, show portfolio work to high school students, etc. Can cover animation, graphic design, illustration, media arts. In English classes will cover writing for film and video games, in art classes animation, film and video programs. Hilary will talk about SWEAT, the spring work experience program, AI areas of study, scholarships. Goal is to help teachers provide a service to expose students to careers from AI or any other school. Stewart s Presentation The Portfolio show every 3 months. Opportunity for grads to show their final portfolio to industry people, family and friends. AI employers are portfolio driven. They are not looking for just credentials, but what students can do. Chef Evin, was slated to make an entire meal for 24 Home Economics Teachers from Burnaby. English class is most important for those going into video games. Scholarships- aischolarships.com Encourage student to apply for everything. Encourage students to go to open houses-either actual visit or a virtual tour. Virtual.aiopen.com AI is not a typical post-secondary institution. Most teachers at AI are from/are still in the industry. AI provides Facilitation Training to instructors so that their delivery is solid. All programs have Advisory Committees consisting of employers, alumni, current faculty. The meet twice a year to receive feedback about their programs. AI has 51 campuses across North America. Large organization. But still can make changes locally very quickly. For e.g. California Schools focus on Latin American cooking. In Vancouver the focus is on Asian cooking. Programs do change. For instance Game Art and Design for 6 years used to be writing, design, game play, 3 D characters. PAC wanted more specialization. So AI created a brand new model in game design. Most popular programs are Interior Design, Culinary Arts and Graphic Design. Audio has stayed relatively strong. Tech. savvy and somewhat artistic students have a great opportunity in visual effects in movies, TV and ads. Zoic Studios a Visual Effects Company based in Culver City, California has opened one office in Vancouver, British Columbia. Visual Effects live action needs animation. Use Maya, Photoshop, NUKE software program for composting. High school students need not have prior knowledge of these

2 software. Students who can work on a character for hours are well suited. Students are given the big picture- film production, visual effects and everything. Curriculum at AI Quarterly, not semestered. Jan, April, July, Oct. Have three schools- Culinary School, Design School and Media School. In each of these schools multiple classes have common foundation classes. Parents image of AI as starving artists. AI tries to bring the anxiety level down. Demystify the art industry and bring credibility. Balance with reality. These jobs are mostly contract to contract, need to network. Very transparent about what students are getting into. Broad range of student support services at AI. Many artistic students are introverted. AI tries to encourage networking students. Capacity 22,000. Bake sale to raise money for scholarships. AI prepares students for workplace and industry. Work and meet deadlines, work under stress, team management. Average class size 14:1. Sometimes in foundations 25:1. Inclusive school- not just for the cream. Not looking for the top 20% of the talent. Collaboration within the program and with other programs. 200,000 alumni from all AIs. Measured as a school by job placement. Princeton Review: Top 10 in Game Program. Admissions: AI not for every student. Every student goes through an admission process. During school visits etc. Hilary collects enquiry cards from high school students. After that interview scheduled with student and family. There are two parts to this- Info. And tour. AI spend two to three hours to understand the student. Then based on the fit, AI encourages them to apply. Tremendous amount of time invested in each student. If a student has a challenge, they are actually put in a program and monitored, as to how they perform. Course load may be reduced.

3 Admission- High school graduation. This is the only academic requirement. Won t look at grades. Recognize that AI students are not stellar academic students. English requirement for degree program: For education need 68% or higher in English Or TOEFL or take a transitional English course at AI. Need essay as to why chose the program, this can be written or a video. Interview Scholarship Application. Portfolio required for scholarship but not for admission. For degree program can transfer credits from Emily Carr Foundation or BCIT. Minimum of C mark in course syllabi. Tuition: Not subsidized. Everything they do is generated from tuition. Difference between domestic and international is very little- 35%. Full time is 5 courses per quarter. Tuition- pay quarterly. Around $24000 a year. Classes 4 hours a day. Can take a quarter off. Diploma is under 2 years (1 year and 9 months). 11 weeks on, two weeks break. Financial Planner: Builds individual plans. Not just at point of entry, but all the way through. Student loans, family support, line of credit, reduced course load to 60% (will take longer to complete). AI students are not money driven. $500,000 in scholarships last year. Expected Grad Salaries - Game Programmers- start with average $33000 to $ Film, Audio Production- $22000 to $ Culinary Arts- $28000 Programs: 1. Professional Recording Arts- Diploma. LIPA program is fully articulated block transfer program that allows students to begin earning their diploma at eh AI, Vancouver, and then seamlessly shift their studies to the Liverpool Institute for Performing Art, LIPA for a degree. Full articulation with a Bachelor s degree in California. 2. Gaming- Components- game story, Game Programming need physics and math, create characters, animation- basically movement like a puppeteer, audio. 3. Event Management Degrees: 1. Bachelor of Applied Design in Graphic Design: Two years vetting process to get first Bachelor s Degree in Graphic Design. Only private school to offer Art Degrees.

4 2. Bachelor of Applied Design in Interior Design: Now offer this degree as well. 3. Bachelor of Science- Game Programming 4. Bachelors in Fashion, animation, media arts in works. New Programs- Acting in Fall Will be headed by Bill Dow from SFU. Photography Diploma Dual Platform- MAC, PC. Career Services: Prep students six months prior to graduation. Works with students 6 months after graduation to help find jobs. 87% of the grads work in industry within 6 months of graduation. Builds relationships with industry. Persistence in 4 years of university is 35% from start to finish. Whereas at AI it is 85%. Lot due to support services. Lot of artistic students have challenges. AI is very sensitive to this. SWEAT program For high school students. Frist priority Gr12, then 11 and for exceptional Gr. 10 student. March 19 to 22 nd. WE credit. Cost $200. Free for students coming to AI in Fall. Offer: Two scholarships per school. A note about the financial need, story- why you recommend the student. Campus Tour- covered the following: Wall of movie posters that students worked on. Fashion Design and Marketing their show is free for students Library- very unique. Has 2 study rooms. Space for team projects. Back wall magazines from industry. Also has online resources. Traditional books. Event Management Program Equipment Room- $2.5 million investment. Students can rent. Audio Room- Foley Pit. 2 control rooms for music and sound recording. Control Rooms- Audio Engineering, Radar Hard disc. Ear training a critical component. Mixing Board- 24 track. They have only 10 or 12 in Canada.
