1 MERCY COLLEGE Music Industry + Technology The Music Industry + Technology program is housed in a dedicated multi-studio complex in Dobbs Ferry, New York, twenty-miles from midtown Manhattan. The Bachelor s of Science program is designed to prepare students for careers in the Music Industry and Recording Arts with transferable technical skills applicable to related fields that require skilled Audio Professionals such as Film, Television, Radio, Gaming, Theatre and Multi-Media. After completing foundation courses (42 credits) in Music Theory, Recording Engineering, Electronic Music & Music Business, students select advanced specialized courses with a guided focus (See topics below). All instructors are working industry professionals that bring real world experience into the classroom. Through a hands-on curriculum and project based learning, students develop practical skills while also acquiring the critical theoretical knowledge needed to adapt to future technologies. Student projects are presented each year at a showcase open to the public. Other department activities include student ensembles, guest lectures, a student managed record label, and professional recording services for the local musical community. 2 Facilities Studio A RiverWorks Recording Studio with large control room, performance space and drum booth. Digidesign Pro Tools HD, Apple Logic Studio & Propellerhead Reason recording systems with 32 Channel analog Console, Focusrite control surface and assorted external pre-amps & processing equipment. Yamaha baby-grand piano & electronic keyboard, Yamaha drums, Fender, SWR, Eden, and Peavey instrument amplifiers and a large selection of microphones. Studio B Mixing & overdub Studio with large 12 x14 isolation booth. Surround-Sound studio with Digidesign Icon D-Command control surface, Pro Tools HD, Logic Studio and Reason recording systems. A state of the art assortment of boutique analog and digital processors.yamaha 88 key synthesizer, Roland V-drums and assorted synthesis sound modules. Studio C & D Two smaller Mixing Studios with Digidesign/Focusrite control surfaces, Pro Tools, Logic Studio and Reason recording systems with Apple computer and M-Audio keyboard controller and various audio processors. (3) Electronic Music & Audio Production Labs Three labs, each with 15 networked Apple Macintosh (Intel) computers each with M- Audio controllers, Digidesign Mbox audio interfaces, and an array of production software from Digidesign, Apple, Waves, Propellerhead, Cycling 74, Sibelius etc. Studio E Rehersal room with Yamaha Drums, Yamaha keyboard, Fender and SWR amps, Pro Tools, Logic Studio and Reason recording systems with Apple Mac Pro (Dual Quad- Core Intel) computer and Digidesign Digi-02 control surface.
3 Common Questions How can I get more information about the program? Students can get more information, receive a tour, and initiate the application process by contacting the admissions department or the program Director. Program Director: Paul Steinman psteinman@mercy.edu How do I apply to the program? Students should apply through the Mercy College admissions department. An additional essay describing your musical skills, training, production experience and reasons for choosing this area of study is required. your essay to Paul Steinman: Psteinman@mercy.edu Do I need to play an instrument? Applicants should have experience with an instrument, singing and/or music production. All musical styles are welcomed. Applicants may be required to provide a recording as evidence of musical skills. How technically oriented is the curriculum? The program is a Bachelor s of Science Degree. Seventy-five percent of the program is dedicated to the technical concepts and skills related to Recording Engineering and Electronic Music Production: MIDI, Synthesis, Computer Operating Systems, Acoustics, Electronics, Audio Theory, Equipment Operation, Microphone Technique, Recording, Mixing, Editing, System Design etc. Do you teach music performance & composition? Students study basic piano technique and composition in the required Music courses. Students also develop their compositional skills in the Electronic Music courses. Can I begin taking major courses immediately? Depending on placement exam results, students may enroll in three major courses their first fall semester (Audio Production I, Electronic Music I, Music Theory). Do students have access to studios for personal projects? Students have access to all labs and studios for personal projects assuming the student has completed appropriate preliminary courses and is self-sufficient in a particular facility. Students are assigned their own personal studio time in conjunction with a particular course and may also reserve the studios for additional projects using an online booking procedure. Outside guests are welcome accompanied by the student.
4 Are courses available in the evenings and weekends? The program is currently offered only during daytime hours. Are their department activities? The department has an electronic music ensemble, Jazz & world music ensemble, guest speakers, concerts, musical competitions and student events. Students are encouraged to participate in the student managed Discovered recording label. How long does the Program take to complete? The Bachelor s program has 60 credits (20 courses) in a sequence which takes a minimum of three years (5-6 semesters) to complete. It is recommended that students complete 9 credits in the major per semester beginning the freshman year. Does the program provide career services? The program houses a database of career related resources. A dedicated member of the program faculty provides assistance to students with preparing resumes, cover letters, portfolios and personal web sites used for pursuing employment. Career related topics and preparation for entering the industry are discussed in the Music Business courses. What are some career paths that I will be prepared to pursue? Recording, Mix & Mastering engineer Concert, Theatre & Location Recording engineer Sound editor and audio Technician for Radio/Film/Television Sound engineer/editor for gaming and animation MIDI & Synthesis programmer and technician Recording Artist, Composer, Producer Sound system design and installation Technical writer for Audio/Music trade magazines Music executive, Promoter, Artist Manager Audio and music retail sales and technical support Equipment and software manufacturing companies Music software and systems engineer What is the difference between the Bachelor s and Associate s programs? The Associate s program has fewer major courses with a total of 60 credits for the degree including general education requirements. Because of the sequence of major courses, the program takes a minimum of 5 semesters.
