Ryan Hamilton Presenter Bios and Session Information Motivation Myths: Exploring the Causes of What Appears to be a Lack of Athlete Motivation This talk will explore the various factors which appear to manifest in a lack of motivation. The impact of low self-confidence, unmet needs and burnout as they relate to motivation will be explored. Ryan holds a PhD from the University of New Brunswick in Sport Psychology and has also earned a Master's degree in sport and exercise science and a bachelor's degree (honours) in psychology. Dr. Hamilton is an assistant professor in the department of Psychology at the University of New Brunswick and is a recent recipient of the Arts Faculty Teaching Excellence Award. Ryan has been consulting with athletes since 2000 at the university, provincial, national and international level. Ryan is the lead sport psychologist with the Canadian Sport Centre in New Brunswick, works extensively with the UNB Varsity Reds programs and has attended the last three Canada Games with Team New Brunswick. Ryan has consulted with athletes from more than 30 different sports including non-traditional sports such as lawn bowling and wrestling as well as mainstream North American sports like football and hockey - where he has consulted at the NHL level. Personally, Ryan was a varsity cross country runner at the University of New Brunswick and routinely subjects himself to the marathon.
3 2. Leo Thornley Do you even know what you are doing? Planning a 4 year cycle Coming soon Leo Thornley, MSc, CSCS, CEP currently works with the Canoe Kayak National Team. He has also worked with high level athletes on the National Sailing team. He works closely with the coaches and athletes in training camps and at competitions both domestically and internationally. Sport science services within the CSCA are coordinated by Leo, who has been with the Centre since 2002 and has worked with summer Olympic teams through the last two full quadrennials. Leo has a BSc in Sport Science from the University of Brighton (UK) and a Masters degree in Kinesiology, specializing in Environmental Exercise Physiology from Dalhousie University in Halifax, NS. He is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist with the National Strength and Conditioning Association and a Certified Exercise Physiologist with the Canadian Society of Exercise Physiology. 3. Ann Dodge Coaching for Character What about the Ethical Component of your Coaching? Coaches usually have a good grasp on the technical and tactical aspects of coaching, but during this session you will be challenged to examine your beliefs about the many ethical issues that arise as part of the coaching process. Ann played on many sport teams participating in both volleyball and athletics at the provincial level, but it was the sport of Canoe/Kayak that took her to the world stage. After a three gold medal performance at the 1973 Canada Summer Games, Ann was named Nova Scotia s Athlete of the Year. She competed at four World Championships, as well as the 1976 Montreal Olympics. She was inducted into the Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame in 2004 and in 2007 she was recognized as a Woman of Excellence by the Halifax Progress Club. Ann holds a Bachelor of Physical Education from Acadia University and a Master s degree (Sport Management) from the University of New Brunswick. For the past 19 years, she has served as a lecturer in the Kinesiology program at Acadia University. Her teaching and research focuses on gender equity, sport ethics, coaching, and wellness. Ann is also the Leadership Theme Mentor and Facilitator for the CSCA Advanced Coaching Diploma.
4 4. Graham Kennedy Building a Rocket Fuelled Sport Club Ever wonder what separates a good sport organization from a great one? From processes to players, culture to coaches, philosophy to parents, this presentation examines the keys to building, maintaining, and continuously improving great youth sport organizations. Graham Kennedy is a soccer coach at St. Francis Xavier University where he coaches both the men s and the women s varsity teams. Prior to coaching at the CIS level, Coach Kennedy had a successful career as a technical director, teacher, professional scout and consultant. From , Kennedy worked for Calgary Foothills Soccer Club guiding the club from a small volunteer organization to its current status as one Canada s most prestigious and successful amateur sport clubs. The CIS Coach of the Year in 2010, Kennedy is a Chartered Professional Coach who holds advanced coaching certifications from Canada, USA and Europe in addition to a graduate degree in coaching studies from the University of Victoria. 5. Wade Gilbert KEYNOTE TITLE Principles of Talent Development: Lessons Learned from the World's Greatest Sampling extensively from the world s greatest in sport, education, business, psychology and medicine I have learned that talent development rests on three principles: (1) individual needs are the spark that ignites the talent development fire, (2) talent development requires high levels of personal mastery, and (3) settings matter more than individual behavioral intentions. Audience members will leave with a better understanding of the science of talent development and how the three principles can be applied to their own quest for success. Creating the Right Environment: The Science of Optimal Talent Development Settings This session outlines the key setting features associated with optimizing talent development in sport. A special emphasis is placed on describing the types of coaching behaviors and practice structures that are most commonly found in successful sport settings.
5 Dr. Wade Gilbert is a professor in the Department of Kinesiology at California State University, Fresno. Dr. Gilbert holds degrees in Physical Education, Human Kinetics, and Education from the University of Ottawa in Canada. Upon completion of his doctoral degree he was selected for a post-doctoral fellowship in the International Center for Talent Development at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). Dr. Gilbert's areas of expertise include coaching science, talent development, sport and exercise psychology, physical education and youth sport. He has over 20 years of experience conducting applied research with partners around the world spanning the full range of sports and settings from local youth leagues through to World Cup Soccer. He is widely published and he is frequently invited to serve as a featured speaker at national and international events. He is co-editor for the International Sports Coaching Journal, the Routledge Handbook of Sports Coaching, and an associate editor for the Journal of Sport Psychology in Action. As a result of his many contributions, Dr. Gilbert has served as a scientific advisor to organizations ranging from school districts, collegiate teams, Olympic Associations and the United Nations. He currently serves as the chief scientific advisor to BeLikeCoach, a national non-profit dedicated to improving the quality of youth sport settings in the United States. 6. Cindy Tye Males Coaching Females An Athletes Perspective This session will open the discussion on males coaching females. Participants will learn from a veteran s balanced perspective on how to "connect" with female athletes. Cindy is a graduate of Acadia University where she was a National Champion, Academic and CIS All Canadian, and Acadia Athlete of the Year. A long-time competitor in the Nova Scotia Soccer League, Cindy has competed in a dozen National Championships, including Canada Games, winning six medals. At the age of 28 years, she made the national team and played for Canada in 2002 and She was inducted to the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame in Cindy currently holds a National B license and has been assistant coach and/or head coach for the last two Canada Games teams. She coaches at our National Training Center and has been in our Provincial Program for the past 10 years. 7. Bettina Callary
6 On Your mark, Mind Set, Motivate: Let's talk Sport Psychology This session outlines ways that coaches can integrate sport psychology into their training. Dr. Bettina Callary is an assistant professor in the department of Community Studies, Sport and Human Kinetics, at Cape Breton University. She received her PhD in Human Kinetics from the University of Ottawa. Her areas of expertise include coach learning, development and professionalization; coaches understanding and implementation of the LTAD model, and coaches awareness and application of athletes psycho-social needs. Bettina is an alpine ski coach and has earned her NCI certificate in High Performance Coaching. She has coached all levels of athletes from entry level to the world stage. Bettina is a course facilitator for the NCCP and the Canadian Ski Coaches Federation, and is a mental training consultant for athletes interested in gaining a mental edge on their performance. 8. Evan MacInnis Looking Back to Move Forward Which areas of your season have been successful as well as which areas have room for improvement? The session will examine the different types of program evaluation, the timing of conducting these evaluations and what to do once this information is collected. Evan MacInnis has been working in sport for the past 12 years. As Manager of Athlete Services with the Canadian Sport Centre Atlantic, Evan works with high performance athletes and coaches, managing and assessing essential support services in sport medicine and sport science to enhance an athlete s daily training environment. Evan has conducted numerous reports on program planning and evaluation for Provincial team, Canada Games and National training groups. He has also been a staff member for the 2009, 2011 and 2013 Canada Games. Originally from Cape Breton, Evan earned a BSc in Human Kinetics from St FX University as well as a Master s degree in Sport Administration from the University of New Brunswick. Evan also plies his trade as a rower on Lake Banook in the summer time, in nice weather. 9. Daniel Worthington
7 Video analysis for team sports Video analysis had become an important part of athlete development and team success. This presentation will focus on ways in which coaches can use video technology to enhance team play and athlete development. Daniel Worthington is Assistant Coach of the Women s National Team and Director of the U23 EXCELeration program with the Canadian Soccer Association. Daniel moved to Canada from England in 1999 to study Chemistry at St. Mary s University. Formally the Director of High Performance with Soccer Nova Scotia and the Director of the National Training Centre (Atlantic), Daniel acted as strategic leader and guide for many promising athletes to peruse their soccer dreams. Daniel has worked with the CSA U17 programs and is currently involved in legacy building for women s soccer in Canada. This coincides with upcoming milestones: FIFA World Cups in Canada, U , WNT 2015 and Olympic Qualification. 10. Gardiner MacDougall Building resilient teams that withstand the ups ad downs of a season and are able to play their best when it matters most takes time, talent and the ability to focus on the little things. This presentation will provide an inside look at what it takes to develop long-lasting success. As lead of one of Canada s most successful university hockey programs, Gardiner MacDougall recently guided UNB to their fifth CIS championship (2013, 2011, 2009, 2007, 1998) and has CIS Silver Medals in 2004 and He was also a member of the Team AUS coaching staff who won a gold medal at the 2007 FISU Games in Torino, Italy. A native of PEI, MacDougall is the alltime AUS coaching leader for wins and this year will become the first ever AUS coach with over 400 all-time wins. He is in the top five in the CIS for career victories. Prior to UNB, MacDougall had an outstanding career in Junior Hockey where he was named Coach of the Year on four separate occasions while capturing four League/ Provincial championships. MacDougall was named the 2010 CIS Coach of the Year and is one of only three coaches to be a three-time AUS coach of the year winner.
