3 Prologue This reader was written as an assignment for the Dutch Taekwondo Federation () within a project to make sports more accessible, which was sponsored by the Dutch Olympic Committee. This reader acts as a manual for both trainers and their assistants. Because in the book Jeugdactiviteiten (Youth activities), published by the, not all aspects received the attention necessary, I choose to fill in the blanks when I was assigned to write a paper for my 6 th degree black belt exam. At the same time I could make the changes necessary to update it to current Taekwondo regulations. The form of competition described in this reader is being offered to the as a form to make sports more accessible by the school for Korean Martial Arts Keumgang Vaals. M.J. 4 Activity: Youth Competition category (new style) This activity was originally developed as a way for beginning Taekwondo pupils and youngsters to get in touch with the all the aspects of Taekwondo competition in a fun but above all in save way and environment. In test tournaments it was made clear that this form of competition made Taekwondo competition more accessible for children of all ages within both the B and C category. 1. Goal The goal of this style of competition is to get beginning Taekwondo pupils in touch with all the aspects of Taekwondo competition in a save and familiar environment. The three aspects being: 1. Poomse 2. WTF sparring 3. Kicking Target Track 2. Participating clubs/schools Several schools can be put in a pool together. This pool can be played together on the days the school usually used to teach. Two clubs play against each other while the third club organizes the match and takes caring of judging. Every club/school takes part with a team of around 10 beginner Taekwondo students (in the school a pre-selection can take place). 5 3. Selection criteria Participants will be split up in s with the following criteria - gup grade - weight - sex - age - height ** The height is important for players in the kicking-target-track. The player has to kick 5cm above his head with the ball of his/her foot. 6 4. The Game. 1 Poomse Two players perform a styleform, like saju or taeguk. Judging is done as at regular style matches with at last three and a maximum of five judges. The judges determine a winner by raising a red or blue card. Points Winner Loser 1 point 0 points This poule will be dealt with in total. 2. WTF-sparring. Two players compete against each other in a sparring match. A match consists of one round, lasting at the most 1 minute and 30 seconds. The rules for scoring are the same as in a regular match, with the difference that the judge can correct the players verbally. Judging is done as at regular sparring matches by one head referee and three corner referees. The corner referees determine a winner by raising red and blue cards. The cards corresponding with color of the player s hogu. Note: The games are also very usable to train your own referees and offer them a way to gain more experience). 7 3. Kicking target track Players, outside of the gamefield, have to follow a track in which they have to perform three kicks in a row. These kicks are: Twio ap-chagi Twio yeop-chagi Dubon tollyo-chagi (left/right) The time in which this is done, determines the winner.. The referee will hold the target. When a kick is invalid they will tell the player. One invalid kicks means one second will be added to the total time. Two invalid kicks means two seconds will be added and three seconds will be added for three invalid kicks. The pair with the fastest track time will get 1 point while no points will be given for the other pair. 5. Groupsize It depends on the time available (1.5 to 2 hours) 10/15 players per competing school is a reasonable amount. 7

9 9. Reward system. It is very convenient to use the point-appreciation system of the so called vanen tournament. Every player gets five points for every game played. For every point scored his or her team gets another five points. And every player of the winning team get five bonus points This way a player can get 25 points per game. For every 25 points scored, the player gets a small flag called vaantje. The colors of this vaantje correspond with the colors of the gup-system 25 points white/yellow 50 points yellow 75 points yellow/green 100 points green 125 points green/blue 150 points blue 175 points blue/red 200 points red 225 points red/black 250 points black If a player reaches 250 points, his or her trainer can reward him with a special promotion... 9

14 13 Implementation Youth competition Limburg District A letter I wrote to schools within the Limburg district of the Dutch Taekwondo Federation ().. -district Limburg Concerns: Implementing Limburg Youth competition C-category 2001 Dear fellow school owner, District Limburg will start this year implementing a new concept for youth activities. Youth competition, as organized in the last few years, have, due to the high level, passed their goal as what once started as an initiative for all youth members. An activity where all children could get used to competitive Taekwondo in a safe and familiar environment. For this purpose we have developed a new style of competition that will serve this goal better. This competition is very suitable for beginning Taekwondo practitioners to get used to three different elements for Taekwondo competition. Poomse, sparring and Kyeok Pa in the form of a target-track. The reactions we have received of both the players, their parents and the people involved were very positive. District Limburg has decided to put these activities, Limburg Youth Competition C-category 2001, on the calendar of activities this year. Rules for the games can be found in the booklet that every member school has received on youth activities from our organization. The members of our district committee will appoint a district coordinator who will see to it that, under the supervision of the WOC, a demonstration match will be held. All interested schools can come to this demonstration match to see how this kind of competition can be played and implemented. This event also serves to come to one standard form to play this kind of competition. This demonstration match will be played between Cheon Kwon Kerkrade and Keumgang Vaals. Date Time Place: Rolduc Gym, Kerkrade. Registration: Registration is only possible with the permission of the head instructor of your school or club. The enclosed registration form should be send to: District Limburg Chairman PO Box AC, Vaals The costs for participation for each school is 35 guilders per team. An inventory of schools willing to participate will be made. Also one coordinator per region will be appointed, to deal with the competition in his/her region. Every school can only participate with one team consisting of 12 to 15 persons maximum. The amount of players per club will later be announced. Pre-selection is up to the participating club. Which schools have to compete each other will be determined by balloting. Games will be played on places and dates determined by the competing schools. Only the month in which the game should take place, will be determined by the coordinator of the region. Every region plays their competition and the region coordinator registers the points for each school. The club with the highest score of the region will have to compete against the schools from the other two regions in the district finals. The final will be played at the end of the season. 15
