1. Introduction Yonsei invites students from all over the world to attend its International Regular Semester Program. Attending students are able to take a multitude of English-taught courses, which range across a wide variety of subjects, and transfer credit back to their home universities. In addition, students are also able to take Korean language classes as well as take classes taught in Korean if they desire. Currently, Yonsei University has over 630 exchange agreements with universities across the globe. As a leading institution in education, Yonsei provides its exchange students with not only an environment to nurture academic growth, but also a culturally rich experience in one of the largest and most robust cities in Asia. Furthermore, students are able to form global connections with the 730 other students from over 40 different countries that attend Yonsei University s International Program every semester. 7 a) Release schedule Semester Spring (March to June) 4. Course Information Course offering release schedule 1 st week of January Spring (September to December) 1 st week of July Noting the late informing of the courses to be offered in the upcoming semester, when a student is applying for their Study Abroad, they can only check the current or previous semesters course offering information (including syllabi). b) Accessing the course catalogue Course syllabi are available online on the Yonsei Portal (portal.yonsei.ac.kr). - Select ENGLISH The relevant menu is Course Catalogue and Syllabus. This is the menu for checking the courses offered and syllabi, as well as previous course offerings. No login is required to access this menu. Please note that if you do not use Internet Explorer 6 or higher, Yonsei websites do not work properly (eg drop-down menus do not work on Firefox). Thus, whenever you want to access to the Yonsei University website, please use Internet Explorer. c) Course level The course level can be determined by the course code. If the course code is 1000 level (eg IEE1101), the course is classified as a General Education / Lower Level course. From 2000 to 4000, the course can be considered a Major Elective / Required / Basic course. From 5000 above, the course is classified as a Graduate Course. Page 7 of 20

d) Korean language courses Korean language courses are those offered through the Yonsei Korean Language Institute (KLI). Taking Korean language courses is not a requirement on the part of Yonsei. However, some students home institutions may have such a requirement. Course catalogue location: Undergraduate Programs > Study Abroad Course > Korean Language Credits: 6 Levels: 6 Schedule: 4-6 pm, Mon-Fri, 16 weeks Enrollment: enroll for any level (see pg 12) > take the placement test > adjust your course level within the Drop and Add period (see pg 12) e) English undergraduate courses Regular undergraduate courses: These are listed under a major of each college. The courses taught in English will have a 2 in the Reference column. Underwood International College: Courses offered by the Underwood International College (UIC) are taught in English. These courses are listed under a major of UIC. As UIC has many interdisciplinary courses, students are asked to navigate UIC courses if there is no conventional major course in a college. However note that some UIC courses may have restrictions non-major students. Therefore it is highly recommended to check the reference box of each course. Office of International Affairs courses: Special English courses are also offered through the Office of International Affairs (OIA). These courses are for study abroad exchange / visiting program participants. They can be found in the course catalogue in Undergraduate Programs > Study Abroad Course > Undergraduate. These courses have the code IEE. f) Graduate courses Priority in enrolling for graduate courses is given to graduate exchange students. However, senior undergraduate students (ie in their final year of study) may also enrol in a maximum of one graduate course, as long as the following conditions have been met: i. Overall grade average of higher than 3.0 out of 4.0; and ii. Approval from the lecturing professor (using the form on the last page). Without proof of the professor s approval, the OIA will delete the course from the system. Therefore, undergraduate students should not enrol in graduate courses without confirmation from the OIA. The graduate courses available for exchange students can be found in the course catalogue in Undergraduate Programs > Study Abroad Course > Graduate. g) Regular Korean-taught courses Korean-taught courses are also open to incoming exchange and visiting students. However, non-native speakers of Korean should consult with the course professor on the first day of class to determine whether their Korean level is sufficient to keep up with the course. Page 8 of 20

h) Course timetable On the Yonsei Portal, the course time period is written eg as Mon1, Tue 2, 3 or Mon1 Tue2,3(Fri 2,3). The numbers indicate the periods of the course. The first period begins at 9:00am. All classes last 50 minutes, followed by a 10 minute break. Days Time Period Real Class Time M, T, W, Th, F 1 09:00-09:50 i) Courses with lab / practice time 2 10:00-10: :00-11: :00-12: :00-13: :00-14: :00-15: :00-16: :00-17: :00-18:50 Most English courses have two different classes: lecture time, and practice time assisted by a Korean T.A.(Teaching Assistant). Where English courses have lab or practice time, this time is indicated in brackets in the Time Period of the course. The additional practice time should be included in the total class contact hours. j) Class locations Yonsei uses the following abbreviations for classroom building information. The online campus map can be seen here (select Sinchon Campus). Abbr. Each professor has their own evaluation method, so the first point of reference should be the professor and course syllabus. However, below is a general summary of grading policies. Non-OIA courses: curve (comparative) basis KLI and OIA courses (coded with IEE ): absolute basis Page 11 of 20

a) Portal access period 5. Course Registration The Yonsei Portal can be logged into from the week of the first course registration to the final day for checking grades Spring semester students can check whether their Portal account works from 4 February. b) Course registration schedule Enrollment can only be done through the online Yonsei Portal during the scheduled period. Enrolment period Date Time (Seoul Time, GMT +9) First course registration 5 February (THU) 10:00 17:00 Second course registration 25 February (WED) 10:00 17:00 Final course registration (Drop and Add period) 4 March (WED) 6 March (FRI) 8:00 18:00 c) Course registration Course registration must be done through the Undergraduate Course Enrollment menu on Yonsei Portal. This is so regardless of your current school year or status as a graduate or undergraduate student. Login ID: Yonsei Student ID number Login password: initial password format is the student s date of birth, in the format YYMMDD. For example, if a student s date of birth is 30 April 1990, their password would be If you forget your password, contact the OIA to reset the password to the YYMMDD format. During the registration period, to register for a course, students must click on the course code. A new course may also be added by typing in the course code and section number in the Enrolled Courses frame. Choose the Add option, enter the Course Code and Section for each text box and click save ( ). To check the spaces available for a certain course, search for the course code or course title in the blank search box next to the selection box. If a course was registered properly, the course will be listed under the Courses Enrollment Result of the Course Enrollment page. To delete a course, clicking on the course code at the Courses Enrolment Result section will remove it. All students must reconfirm their enrollment by logging in again. Page 12 of 20

There is a limit to the number of students that can be enrolled in all courses. Admission is granted on a first-come first-serve basis. When enrolling for courses, it may be helpful to register for courses with the fewest sections first to increase chances of acceptance. Students should also consider preparing a list of alternative courses in case some classes reach capacity. d) Using the wish list Noting the speed which registration requires during the registration period, students may make a wish list of courses that they wish to enroll in prior to the registration period. At 7:00am on the day of course registration, students can log in to the Yonsei Portal. Once logged in, courses can be added to the wish list for quick access during the registration period. You can register for the courses by clicking on the course codes directly from the wish list, and this is the most recommended method. Page 13 of 20

e) Viewing your course schedule During the course registration period: click the Course Schedule tab, next to the Course Enrollment tab. You are required to have a copy of your course schedule for verification. Please note this function is only working during the designated time period. After the course registration period: access the following menu on Yonsei Portal: Academic Information System > Academic Management System Course Curriculum and Enrollment Folder > Course Schedule tab. Page 14 of 20

6. Post-registration a) Inability to enrol online due to capacity constraints Where a student is unable to register for their desired courses due to a lack of seats in the first two course registration periods, they may seek approval from the lecturing professor to enrol in the course. To do so, students should meet the professor in advance or on the first day of classes to get permission to enroll in the course using the form at the end of this document. This form MUST be given to the exchange coordinator at the OIA before the end of the Drop and Add period. The exchange coordinator will then manually add the course to the system. b) Withdrawing from a course The course withdrawal period is for three days(april 1 3). Students who did not drop a course during the Drop and Add period can withdraw from a course during this period without a record on the academic transcript. This process is done through the Yonsei Portal Academic Management System menu. As this process is the last chance to withdraw from a course, students must stick to the courses after this period, despite the reasons otherwise. The only other option is to leave Yonsei altogether. c) Changing sections (class number) Dropped courses cannot be recovered if the course becomes full after it is dropped. Therefore, if a student merely wishes to change the section of an en enrolled course, it is recommended that they use the Change Section menu in the Enrolled Courses frame. Select Change Section, and enter the Course Code, Section Number and Lab Section to change, and then click save ( ). Page 15 of 20

7. FAQ Q: If I can take a course taught in Korean, how can I get the syllabus in English? And would this be transferrable to my home university? A: You are responsible for requesting an English course syllabus from your professor before you leave the program. Course transfer is the discretion of your school, not Yonsei. Q: What if there is no course description or syllabus for the offered courses? A: Check the previous semester s course information through Yonsei Portal. Otherwise, your professor to get it. Getting the right syllabus before the end of the semester is important for your credit transfer process at your home institution. Q: Is there an Incomplete or Pass/Fail Option? A: There is no Incomplete option. After the course withdrawal period, students must finish the course. There is no option for changing letter grading to Pass/Non-Pass (Fail) grading. However, there are pre-designated P/NP graded courses these courses have the reference code b. Q: Can exchange students take the KLI Summer or Winter programs for free? A: No, Summer and Winter programs are not included in the exchange semesters (Spring and Fall). Yonsei offers free of charge and for credit KLI courses during the regular semesters (Spring and Fall). Q: What are the reference codes shown on the Portal? Code a b c 2 1 Meaning Course is taught in a second foreign language eg Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, French(native lecture) Course is graded on a P/NP basis Course is offered at the International Campus, not the Sinchon Campus.
