COMMERCIAL & MIXED-USE TOTAL OFFICE RELOCATION, CANARY WHARF, LONDON Having identified the need to relocate their treasury team from Paris to London, our client needed a project team who could make the move happen quickly but within a tight budget. Taking up this challenge we assembled an experienced team to fast-track an interior fit out of 25,000ft 2 of existing office space to British Council for Offices Category B fit-out specification. Leading an Anglo-French project team through all the key stages of the programme our project managers, costs consultants, quantity surveyors and CDM coordinators ensured that the transfer of our client s business operations was completed in less than a year. All (Total) operational people were very pleased with the offices and full of admiration for the work done...you can thank the whole team for their achievement. THE DIRECTORS, TOTAL FINANCE CORPORATE SERVICES. As global economies strengthen and grow so too does the commercial property market. Whether a property is solely for commercial use or part of a larger mixed-use development the business needs and operations of a client are of upmost importance to ensure that a property can be in use as quickly and efficiently as possible. NESTON MIXED USE SCHEME, CHESHIRE The Neston town centre redevelopment included a new medium sized supermarket, a new town square and a number of flats and offices. This project was initiated to complement other regeneration activities in the town centre being progressed through the Neston Market Town Initiative. Our expert team provided full engineering design services for the redevelopment, which was desperately needed to boost the local economy and increase the performance of the market town and to bring it in line with others of a similar size. Our multidisciplinary teams have undertaken a range of projects in this area from new build to refurbishment TEMPLE QUAY, BRISTOL Hufton+Crow and regeneration. Developed according to an overall urban design framework of commercial, leisure, office, retail, health and residential our house builder client required experienced architects and landscape architects who could help them realise a new development outside their core market. Impressed with our expertise further professional services were subsequently procured from us including town planning, structural engineering and services engineering. Throughout the project sustainability has been a key driving factor with sustainable development profiles being prepared for each phase demonstrating how the proposals meet the local authority s sustainable development objectives regarding climate change, sustainable transport and sustainable communities. Winner in The Daily Telegraph s Your Newhome Awards as the Best City Development
EDUCATION COCKERMOUTH SCHOOL ECO CENTRE, CUMBRIA As project manager and engineering designer for the Eco Centre at Cockermouth School we helped ensure this building became a showcase for sustainable design. The building is highly insulated and boasts state-of-the-art technologies so that its power consumption is minimal. In addition, the build made extensive use of recycled and low carbon impact materials whilst also incorporating energy generation through the use of photovoltaic panels and a wind turbine, all of which led to nomination and success in a number of awards. Winner of many awards including the Best Sustainable Building at the City of London Sustainable City Awards, the Built Environment category of the Northwest Business Environment Awards Learning environments can play an important role in supporting young people as they develop and prepare for life though the education system. We recognise this and are committed to supporting our clients in their visions to create learning environments that are flexible, stimulating, exciting and accessible to all. We deliver a variety of services to provide solutions for the design of schools, academies, colleges, universities and research centres, many of which have been award winning. BURNLEY COLLEGE, LANCASHIRE Constructed on a gateway site adjacent to the River Calder this project saw delivery of a centralised support services hub and associated car parking, sports pitches and breakout areas giving students and teachers alike better facilities. Alongside provision of civil and structural engineering, building services and environmental design services our multidisciplinary background meant that we were able to bring in-house specialists into the project at short notice to overcome issues as they arose and keep work on programme. MANCHESTER METROPOLITAN UNIVERSITY BUSINESS SCHOOL The new business school and student hub at Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) is an exceptional and inspiring 21st century learning environment. Raising the University s profile and acting as the catalyst for the continuing development of the All Saints Campus, the building offers a stimulating experience for students, academics and support staff alike as well as the general public. Our team of civil, structural and geotechnical engineers helped ensure that MMU s ambition to use the building as effectively as possible and create a flagship, exemplar, low energy building was met. This resulted in the building achieving an excellent BREEAM rating. Winner of The Institution of Structural Engineers Regional Award and the 2013 British Construction Industries Prime Minister s Better Public Building Award. Hufton+Crow
RETAIL & LEISURE BANGOR AURORA AQUATICS CENTRE, NORTHERN IRELAND Innovative and creative design solutions were key to the success of this development which houses a host of aquatic and sports facilities under, what is reported to be the largest roof span of its type in the British Isles. Bringing a range of services to the project including civil and structural, transport, fire engineering and acoustics our experts introduced a number of measures which led to the centre achieving a BREEAM excellent rating. They were also able to help avoid costly delays, using their knowledge and expertise to tackle ground issues early on. Donal McCann Photography We have benefited from WYG s expertise throughout the project... unusually for an aquatic building their contribution to the achievement of BREEAM Excellent has been highly significant. DAVID WARDEN, DIRECTOR OF LEISURE SERVICES FOR BANGOR BOROUGH COUNCIL. Winner of the Award for Regional Groups at the Structural Awards 2014 The key to success in the retail and leisure industry often comes down to ensuring that visitors have positive and memorable experiences. From major town centre shopping parks to hotels and leisure centres we deliver vibrant, safe and sustainable environments which give our clients a leading edge in today s competitive markets. In the retail market we provide strategic planning advice to a number of key clients. Futhermore, our multidisciplinary experience covers town centre regeneration and out-of-town shopping malls, retail parks as well as store refurbishments and major fit-outs. In the leisure industry we have delivered a variety of schemes including hotels, swimming pools, sports stadia and museums. HARD DAY S NIGHT HOTEL, LIVERPOOL This classic, eight storey, Grade II Listed, city centre office building has been magnificently transformed into a four star, avant-garde themed hotel. Dating from the early part of the 20th century, the original building had lain derelict for many years. Our experts provided quantity surveying, employer s agent and CDMC services for the refurbishment. Works comprised a full internal remodelling of the existing floors, including the basement, the addition of new fourth and fifth floors and a flat roof. The development, complete with specially commissioned artworks, contains 110 guest rooms and public rooms. NEW IKEA STORES, UK WIDE Expanding their store portfolio has led IKEA to consider the impact that their new developments would have on local transport links. Our experts have provided transport advice to IKEA in support of proposals for new stores in a number of locations including Sheffield and Reading. This has included undertaking detailed traffic-modelling to form part of the overall transport assessments. Engaging and liaising with the Highways Agency, highways authorities and all other stakeholders throughout our work has been instrumental in ensuring a positive outcome for this client. 6 HEALTHCARE PINDERFIELDS HOSPITAL, WEST YORKSHIRE Our civil and structural engineers were an integral part of the team who redeveloped the Pinderfields General Hospital site in Wakefield into a major acute centre with integral ambulatory care and a diagnostic centre. Holding regular workshops with the Trust s technical team throughout, we developed innovative, creative and cost saving solutions to ensure a top quality facility was delivered for the local area. Winner of Project of the Year at the Yorkshire & Humberside Construction Best Practice Awards Healthcare facilities must be able to withstand constant use but also be future-proofed to cope with advances in medicine, technology and care. Our experts work at the forefront of healthcare design providing innovative, safe and sustainable facilities that do just that. We provide services to almost every type of healthcare facility and have been involved in new build, extension, remodelling and refurbishment projects from major redeveopment schemes to the design of standalone, bespoke modular theatres. ROYAL VICTORIA HOSPITAL, BELFAST We have been involved with the long-term redevelopment of the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast since the 1990 s providing mechanical and electrical engineering, and quantity surveying services from inception through to agreement of final account. As well as delivery of the 50m, 400 bed hospital our experts have been on hand to support development of a new imaging centre plus, a much needed critical care facility for the region which included the provision of a helipad. QUEEN ELIZABETH HOSPITAL, BIRMINGHAM This new hospital was constructed adjacent to the former Queen Elizabeth Hospital to provide essential new facilities. This included 1,213 in-patient beds, plus the largest critical care unit in the world and the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine in a 30-bed military wing. Our work on this project exemplifies our ability to bring together the right people from across our wide range of disciplines to enable a project to move forward. At different stages of the project our experts provided civil, structural, highways, drainage, geo-environmental, contamination remediation, ecology, sustainability and transportation planning consultancy services, each allowing the project to become a step nearer to completion.
DEFENCE & JUSTICE REGULAR ARMY BASING PLAN We have been working with the Ministry of Defence since March 2011, assessing the capacity of their estate in the UK as part of the Basing Optimisation Programme. This has provided the information and evidence needed to shape the Regular Army Basing Plan which maps out how the army will maintain its national presence across the UK. Our work has involved investigating the various options for how the military units, including British troops returning from Germany, could fit into the existing UK defence real estate and carefully assessing the costs associated with each option. On a large scale programme such as this, the provision of data and planning tools by WYG and the integrated project team, enabled informed decision making contributing to a successful Ministerial announcement. BILL YARDLEY, DIRECTOR OF STRATEGIC PROGRAMMES, DEFENCE INFRASTRUCTURE ORGANISATION, MOD. Military establishments, prisons and courts have different needs and priorities to most other facilities with safety and security being a key focus. Our defence and justice work supports the armed forces, the police and the criminal justice system in the UK as well as helping to stabilise and improve facilities for security and justice in countries struggling with the consequences of poverty and war. In the UK, we work through frameworks with a number of major government departments including the Ministries of Defence and Justice, both of whom we have worked with for over 20 years. WANDSWORTH PRISON, LONDON We have worked with the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) for over two decades under framework agreements helping current and future MOJ estates and properties achieve value for money and comply with relevant regulatory and MOJ objectives. A part of this work has seen us managing a multi-million pound refurbishment project at Wandsworth prison, the largest in the UK. Working in collaboration with the MOJ we have been looking at various options for maintaining continuity of operations whilst improving conditions and are now focused on executing works necessary to maintain acceptable environmental conditions and ensure health and safety standards are met. CIVILIAN ENGINEERING SUPPORT TEAM (CEST) Our main role as Civilian Engineering Support Team (CEST) has been to provide support to the UK Works Group (Royal Engineers), the team at the forefront of infrastructure delivery across Afghanistan, by undertaking projects within the camps in support of military operations. We have provided design, procurement, construction supervision and supporting environmental and engineering services and have been responsible for the delivery of the information and knowledge management functions to maintain continuity to the military units as they rotate through their deployment.
HIGHWAYS & TRANSPORT A453 ROAD WIDENING SCHEME To address the problem of heavy congestion and a poor accident record the A453 widening highway improvement scheme is making changes to the area between Junction 24 of the M1 in Leicestershire and the A52 in Nottingham. The scheme consists of the upgrade of existing single carriageways to add more lanes as well as the provision of nine new bridges along the stretch. As the contractor s designer working in partnership with Laing O Rourke and working out of co-located offices in Leicester and on site our team has been involved in three distinct phases of the project undertaking a variety of design elements, providing advice and acting in the role of designer s site representative. Laing O Rourke Partner of Excellence involving the Community Award Efficient transport links are vital for supporting economic growth. With increasing pressure on existing networks, the need for clear and effective advice has never been greater. Our team of engineers and transport planners have a wealth of problem solving experience in all manner of transport projects, covering all modes of transport. Our experience and reputation provides clients with effective solutions for the issues of today and tomorrow. CITY OF EDINBURGH BUSTRACKER Our experts have assisted City of Edinburgh Council with the implementation of a real time passenger information (RTPI) and Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) bus operator fleet management system, called BusTracker. We were involved in the system specification and tender appraisal, project management, testing, commissioning of fleet management and the RTPI system. This included bus priority, web, WAP and smart phone facilities for the fleet which comprises 630 buses and over 400 signs. As a result of our hard-work and expertise we have subsequently been retained as a member of the project team for system expansion. CORBY RAILWAY STATION INFRASTRUCTURE AND TRANSPORT INTERCHANGE We brought together a team of in-house experts to deliver the public realm landscape for the new railway station at Corby. Designs were prepared, which sought to meet the client body s ambitions and provide an appropriate setting for the new railway station. Our experts provided advice on project management, planning and landscape architecture to develop designs, which resulted in the approval of the full planning application. Our civil, structural, mechanical and electrical engineering experts were then added to the team to develop the design through detailed stage to preparation of production information and tender issue. 9 RESIDENTIAL Without the help of your business this would not have been possible BRADFORD PROPERTY FORUM HOMES FOR THE FUTURE, BRADFORD The House for the Future was a major attraction at The British Science Festival 2011, held in Bradford. We were part of a team of volunteers who redeveloped this former derelict house to showcase a range of sustainable and technological solutions available to tackle energy efficiency and sustainability in existing homes. Working closely with Bradford Property Forum, we provided expert advice on low carbon technologies, transforming the house into a practical and sustainable future proofed home. Population rates continue to grow globally and as such the need for efficient and affordable housing is increasing. Whether we re working at the conceptual stages of site selection ensuring that our clients maximise potential, managing a large urban expansion for a consortium of major house builders or providing quantity surveying to social housing providers - we call upon our deep understanding of residential development to help our clients develop places that people want to call home. THE NORTHERN EXPANSION AREA, SWINDON Started in 1995 this project was, at the time, reputed to be the largest privately funded urban expansion project in Europe. Over 17 years on and Swindon now has almost 10,000 new homes within a sustainable new community. Throughout the two phases of the project we provided a comprehensive project and cost management service operating at both a strategic and site level. Our experts took care of everything from administering finances and managing public relations to organising the procurement, implementation and handover of a huge range of infrastructure and landscape contracts. KNOWSLEY HOUSING TRUST, MERSEYSIDE Knowsley Housing Trust is a not-for-profit organisation who, in 2002 took control of more than 14,000 council houses allowing for an improvement programme to go ahead. The organisation committed to delivering a huge long-term investment in tenant homes, housing services and overall regeneration. As project managers, employers agent, quantity surveyors and CDM coordinators, we have helped KHT (now part of the First Ark group) to fulfil this commitment delivering everything from new build schemes to environmental improvements and repair schemes. Some 12 years on and we continue to work in partnership with them providing areas with new, more energy efficient housing.
REGENERATION BICESTER MASTERPLAN, OXFORDSHIRE Our urban & landscape design experts have created a masterplan for Bicester, which promotes an enlarged and vibrant town with a comprehensive range of new homes, employment opportunities and local facilities that will support its expanded future role in the region. The masterplan was developed through an innovative, collaborative design process, channelling the aspirations of residents, businesses and local government to produce a new vision that has broad popular support. We also provided landscape, ecology and archaeology assessments for the local plan evidence base. Revitalising an area through regeneration projects can attract economic investment, create employment opportunities and provide much-needed, residential accommodation. Creative solutions are often required to ensure that bringing these elements together creates a sustainable new community that benefits everybody involved. LEEDS CANAL BASIN, WEST YORKSHIRE This scheme comprised three new buildings providing residential, commercial office, café, bar, restaurants, retail and associated parking as part of a flagship city centre regeneration scheme in Leeds, West Yorkshire, adjacent to the Leeds Liverpool Canal. Bringing together experts from our planning and environmental disciplines we were able to deliver a full range of key services to the client including the environmental impact assessment. The scheme involved a number of innovative ecological mitigation measures which are believed to be unique to the Yorkshire area. WAVERLEY NEW COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT, ROTHERHAM This is the largest single brownfield development opportunity in South Yorkshire covering 280 hectares of previously developed land with a complex history of coal mining and industrial activity. The development aims to create a balanced, sustainable mix of employment plus 3,890 residential units. We are providing a wide range of services from civil engineering and highways to foul/surface water drainage, earthworks and utilities design services. We are also providing invaluable advice on renewable and sustainable energy strategies, waste management strategies, climate change adaptation and carbon footprint analysis as well as producing the sustainability appraisal.
Taking advantage of their local relationships and knowledge, WYG has helped us coordinate this large and complex project whilst managing the interests of numerous stakeholders. LYNNE THOMAS, PROJECT MANAGER, CUMBRIA COUNTY COUNCIL ENERGY NORTH WEST COAST CONNECTIONS When a proposal to develop a new nuclear power station at Moorside in Cumbria required new grid connections with significant planning issues, our team took on the challenge creating workable options. Potential routes passed through Sites of Special Scientific Interest, areas of outstanding natural beauty and UNESCO World Heritage sites and so we needed to be sensitive to the perspectives of all stakeholders from local and county authorities to the Lake District National Park. We delivered a client side role combining programme management, technical specialist services, particularly in planning, landscaping and ecology. In addition our team were able to look at infrastructure in general for the authorities including offshore and onshore wind farms and biomass. For businesses, reducing costs while improving environmental performance is an increasing priority. For governments, establishing reliable supplies that will deliver their country s energy security is vital. BT WIND FOR CHANGE PROGRAMME We provided assistance to BT with their Wind for Change programme, which is the UK s biggest corporate green energy project outside the energy sector. We provided a range of services to assist with site evaluation, project design and planning, archaeological services, including access and transport advice, environmental impact assessments, provision of abnormal load routing reports and site capacity assessments. We offer a multidisciplinary approach across a wide range of technologies supporting both private and public sectors in this fast growing market. We prepared initial feasibility plans for over 100 potential wind farm sites across the UK and took forward five sites into the development phase. We also have over 25 years experience working in the nuclear industry having delivered a diverse portfolio of projects at a number of major nuclear sites. EAST FARM, CODFORD ST MARY, WILTSHIRE Our team secured planning permission for an array of 35,000 panels on 14 hectares of agricultural land in Wiltshire for Solar Power South Ltd. Work on this project included archaeological services, undertaking stakeholder consultation and preparation of the planning application in under six weeks to ensure a timely submission which met with the client s aspirations. The landscape and visual impact assessment (LVIA) accompanying the proposal included Zone of Theoretical Visibility (ZTV) mapping. This assisted with the assessment as well as helping the local planning authority and other interested parties, by providing a clear indication of where the proposed solar panels would be visible in the landscape.
